buddho bhagavān rājagṛhe viharati veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe| dve mahānagare pāṭaliputraṃ rorukaṃ ca| yadā pāṭaliputraṃ saṃvartate, tadā rorukaṃ vivartate| roruke mahānagare rudrāyaṇo nāma rājā rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca| sadāpuṣpaphalavṛkṣāḥ| devaḥ kālena kālaṃ samyagvāridhārāmanuprayacchati| atīva śasyasaṃpattirbhavati| tasya candraprabhā nāma devī, śikhaṇḍī putraḥ kumāraḥ, hirurbhirustasyāgrāmātyau| rājagṛhe rājā bimbisāro rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca| tasya vaidehī mahādevī, ajātaśatruḥ putraḥ kumāraḥ, varṣakāro brāhmaṇo magadhamahāmātyo'grāmātyaḥ| sadāpuṣpaphalavṛkṣāḥ| devaḥ kālena kālaṃ samyagvāridhārāmanuprayacchati| atīva śasyasaṃpattirbhavati| rājagṛhādvaṇijaḥ paṇyamādāya rorukamanuprāptāḥ| atha rājā rudrāyaṇo'mātyagaṇaparivṛto'mātyānāmantrayate-bhavantaḥ, asti kasyacidanyasyāpi rājña evaṃvidhā janapadā ṛddhāśca sphītāśca kṣemāśca subhikṣāśca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyāśca ? sadā puṣpaphalavṛkṣāḥ ? deva kālena kālaṃ samyagvāridhārāmanuprayacchati? atīva śasyasaṃpattirbhavati ? te vaṇijaḥ kathayanti-asti deva pūrvadeśe rājagṛhaṃ nagaram| tatra rājā bimbisāro rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca| tasyāpi sadāpuṣpaphalavṛkṣāḥ| devaḥ kālena kālaṃ samyagvāridhārāmanuprayacchati| atīva śasyasaṃpattirbhavati| tasya sahasravaṇādeva tasyāntike'nunaya utpannaḥ| so'mātyānāmantrayate-kiṃ bhavantastasya rājño durlabham ? te kathayanti-devo ratnādhipatiḥ, sa rājā vastrādhipatiḥ| tasya ratnāni durlabhāni| tena tasya ratnānāṃ peṭāṃ pūrayitvā prābhṛtamanupreṣitaṃ lekhaśca dattaḥ- priyavayasya, tvaṃ mamādṛṣṭasakhā| yadi tava kiṃcida roruke nagare karaṇīyaṃ bhavati, mama lekho dātavyaḥ| sarvaṃ tat pariprāpayiṣyāmi| te taṃ prābhṛtamādāya yena rājagṛhaṃ tena prakrāntāḥ| anupūrveṇa rājagṛhamanuprāptāḥ| taiḥ sā ratnapeṭā rājño bimbisārasyopanāmitā lekhaśca| rājā bimbisāro lekhaṃ vācayitvā amātyānāmantrayate-kiṃ bhavantastadrājño durlabham ? amātyāḥ kathayanti-devo vastrādhipatiḥ sa rājā ratnādhipatiḥ| tasya vastrāṇi durlabhāni| tena tasya mahrārhaṇāṃ vastrāṇāṃ peṭāṃ pūrayitvā prābhṛtamanupreṣitaṃ lekhaśca dattaḥ-priyavayasya, tvaṃ mamādṛṣṭasakhā| yatkiṃcittava rājagṛhe prayojanaṃ bhavati, mama lekho dātavyaḥ| tatsarvaṃ pariprāpayiṣyāmi| te taṃ prābhṛtamādāya yena rorukaṃ tena prakrāntāḥ| anupūrveṇa rorukamanuprāptāḥ| taiḥ sā vastrapeṭā rājño rudrāyaṇasyopanāmitā lekhaśca| sa dūtaḥ pratyāgataḥ| athāpareṇa samayena rājā rudrāyaṇo'mātyagaṇaparivṛtaḥ| so'mātyānāmantrayate-bhavantaḥ kīdṛśastasya rājño ānāhapariṇāhaḥ ? te kathayanti- yādṛśa eva devasya, api tu sa rājā svayaṃ prahartā| prātisīmaiḥ kīdṛśaṃ rājabhiḥ sārdhaṃ saṃgrāmayati ? rudrāyaṇasya rājño maṇivarma pañcāṅgepetośītaṃ uṣṇasaṃsparśamuṣṇe śītasaṃsparśaṃ duśchedaṃ durbhedaṃ viṣaghnamavabhāsātmakaṃ ca| tena tasya taṃ prābhṛtamanupreṣitaṃ lekhaśca dattaḥ-priyavayasya, idaṃ mayā ca tava maṇivarma prābhṛtamanupreṣitaṃ pañcāṅgopetaṃ śīte uṣṇasaṃsparśamuṣṇe śītasaṃsparśaṃ duśchedaṃ durbhedaṃ viṣaghnamavabhāsātmakam| na tvayaitatkasyaciddātavyam| sa dūtastanmaṇivarma ādāya lekhaṃ ca, yena rājagṛhaṃ tena prakrāntaḥ| anupūrveṇa rājagṛhamanuprāptaḥ| tena tanmaṇivarma rājño bimbisārasyopanītaṃ lekhaśca| rājā bimbisārastaṃ dṛṣṭvā vismayamāpannaḥ| tena ratnaparīkṣakā āhūtāḥ -mūlyamasya kuruta| te kathayanti-deva, ekaikaratnamanargho'yam| dharmatā khalu yasya na śakyate mūlyaṃ kartum, tasyaikaikasya koṭimūlyaṃ kriyate| rājā bimbisāro vyathitaḥ kathayati-kiṃ mayā tasya prābhṛtamanupreṣitavyaṃ bhaviṣyati ? sa saṃlakṣayati-ayaṃ buddho bhagavān| sa rājñaḥ sarvadasyānuttarajñānajño vaśiprāptaḥ| gacchāmi, buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ pṛcchāmi| sa tamādāya yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ| rājā bimbisāro bhagavantamidamavocat-roruke bhadanta nagare rājā rudrāyaṇo nāma prativasati mamādṛṣṭasakhā| tena mama pazncāṅgopetamaṇivarma prābhṛtamanupreṣitam| ahaṃ tasya kiṃ prābhṛtamanupraṣeyāmi ? bhagavānāha-tathāgatapratimāṃ paṭe likhāpayitvā prābhṛtamanupreṣaya| tena citrakarā āhūyoktāḥ-tathāgatapratimāṃ paṭe citrayatha| durāsadā buddhā bhagavantaḥ| te na śaknuvanti bhagavato nimittamudgrahītum| te kathayanti-yadi devo bhagavantamantargṛhe bhojayet, evaṃ svayaṃ saṃjñāpaya bhagavato nimittamudgrahītum| rājñā bimbisāreṇa bhagavānantargṛhe upanimantrya bhojitaḥ| asecanakadarśanā buddhā bhagavantaḥ| te yamevāvayavaṃ bhagavataḥ paśyanti, tameva paśyanto na tṛptiṃ gacchanti| te na śaknuvanti bhagavato nimittamudgrahītum| bhagavānāha-mahārāja, khedamāpatsyante, na śakyate tathāgatasya nimittamudgrahītum| api tu paṭakamānaya| tena paṭaka ānītaḥ| tatra bhagavatā chāyā utsṛṣṭā, uktāśca-raṅgaiḥ pūrayata| tasyādhastāccharaṇagamanaśikṣāpadāni likhitavyāni| anulomapratilomadvādaśāṅgaḥ pratītyasamutpādo likhitavyaḥ| gāthādvayaṃ ca likhitavyam-



ārabhadhvaṃ niṣkrāmata yujyadhvaṃ buddhaśāsane|

dhunīta mṛtyunaḥ sainyaṃ naḍāgāramiva kuñjaraḥ||1||



asmin yo dharmavinaye hyapramattaścariṣyati|

prahāya jātisaṃsāraṃ duḥkhasyāntaṃ kariṣyati||2||



yadi kathayati-kimidam ? vaktavyam-iyamabhyupapattiriyaṃ śikṣā iyaṃ lokasaṃvṛtiriyamatyutsāhatā| tairyathāsaṃdiṣṭaṃ sarvamabhilikhitam| bhagavatā rājā bimbisāra uktaḥ-mahārāja, rudrāyaṇasya lekhamanuprayaccha-priyavayasya, idaṃ te mayā trailokyaprativiśiṣṭaṃ prābhṛtamanupreṣitam| asya tvayā ardhatṛtīyāni yojanāni mārgaśobhā kartavyā| svayameva caturaṅgena balakāyena pratyudgantavyam| vistīrṇāvakāśe pradeśe sthāpayitvā mahatīṃ pūjāṃ satkāraṃ kṛtvoddhāṭayitavyam| tataste mahataḥ puṇyasyāvāptirbhaviṣyatīti| rājñā bimbisāreṇa yathāsaṃdiṣṭaṃ lekho likhitvā saṃpreṣitaḥ| rājño rudrāyaṇasya lekha upanāmitaḥ| tena vācitaḥ| tasyāmarṣa utpannaḥ| so'mātyānāṃ kathayati- bhavantaḥ kīdṛśaṃ mama tena prābhṛtamanupreṣitaṃ yasya mayaivaṃvidhaḥ satkāraḥ kartavyo bhaviṣyati ? saṃnāhayata caturaṅgabalakāyam| rāṣṭrāpamardanamasya kariṣyāmaḥ| amātyāḥ kathayanti-deva, mahātmāsau rājā śrūyate| na śakyaṃ tena yadvā tadvā pratiprābhṛtamanupreṣayitum| ānupūrvī tāvatkriyatām| yadi devasya na cittaparitoṣo bhaviṣyati, tatra kālajñā bhaviṣyāmaḥ| evaṃ kriyatām| tenārdhatṛtīyāni yojanāni mārgaśobhā kṛtā| svayameva caturaṅgabalakāyena pratyudgamya praveśitaḥ| vistīrṇāvakāśe pradeśe sthāpayitvā mahatīṃ pūjāṃ kṛtvoddhāṭitā| madhyadeśādvaṇijaḥ paṇyamādāya tatrānuprāptāḥ| tairbuddhapratimāṃ dṛṣṭvā ekaraveṇa nādo muktaḥ-namo buddhāyeti| tasya buddha ityaśrutapūrvaṃ ghoṣaṃ śrutvā sarvaromakūpāṇyāhṛṣṭāni| sa kathayati-ka eṣa bhavanto buddho nāma ? te kathayanti-deva, śakyānāṃ kumāra utpanno'sti himavatpārśve nadyā bhāgīrathyāstīre kapilasya ṛṣerāśramapadasya nātidūre| sa brāhmaṇanairnaimittikairvipaścikairvyākṛtaḥ| sacedgṛhī agāramadhyāvasiṣyati, rājā bhaviṣyati cakravartī caturaṅgairvijetā dhārmiko dharmarājaḥ saptaratnasamanvāgataḥ| tasyemānyevaṃrūpāṇi saptaratnāni bhavanti, tadyathā-cakraratnaṃ hastiratnamaśvaratnaṃ maṇiratnaṃ strīratnaṃ gṛhapatiratnaṃ pariṇāyakaratnameva saptamam| pūrṇaṃ cāsya bhaviṣyati sahasraṃ putrāṇāṃ śūrāṇāṃ vīrāṇāṃ varāṅgarūpiṇāṃ parasainyapramardakānām| sa imāmeva samudraparyantāṃ mahāpṛthvīmakhilāmakaṇṭakāmanutpīḍāmadaṇḍenāśastreṇa dharmeṇa śamenābhinirjitya adhyāvasiṣyati| sacet keśaśmaśrūṇyavatārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇyācchādya samyageva śraddhayā agārādanagārikāṃ pravrajiṣyati, tathāgato bhaviṣyatyarhan samyaksaṃbuddho vighuṣṭaśabdo loke| sa eṣa buddho nāma| tasyaiṣā pratimā| idaṃ kim ? abhyupapattiḥ| idaṃ kim ? śikṣāpadam| idaṃ kim ? lokasya pravṛttinivṛttī| idaṃ kim ? atyutsāhanā| tena pratītyasamutpādo'nulomapratilomaḥ sugṛhītaḥ kṛtaḥ||



atha rudrāyaṇo rājā sāmātyaḥ pratyūṣasamaye sarvārthān sarvakarmāntān pratiprasrabhya niṣaṇṇaḥ paryaṅkamābhujya ṛjukāyaṃ praṇidhāya pratimukhāṃ smṛtimupasthāpya| sa imameva dvādaśāṅgaṃ pratītyasamutpādamanulomapratilomaṃ vyavalokayati, yaduta asmin satīdaṃ bhavati, asyotpādādidamutpadyate yaduta avidyāpratyayāḥ saṃskārā yāvatsamudayo nirodhaśca bhavati tenemaṃ dvādaśāṅgaṃ pratītyasamutpādamanulomapratilomaṃ vyavalokayatā viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśaolaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhittvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| sa dṛṣṭasatyo gāthāṃ bhāṣate-



bhūratnena hi buddhena prajñācakṣurbiśodhitam|

namastasmai suvaidyāya cikitsā yasya hīdṛśī||3||



tena rājño bimbisārasya saṃdiṣṭam-priyavayasya, tvāmāgamya mayoddhṛto narakatiryakpretebhyaḥ pādaḥ, pratiṣṭhāpito devamanuṣyeṣu| ucchoṣitā rudhirāśrusamudrāḥ, laṅghitā asthiparvatāḥ, anādikālopacitaṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhittvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| bhikṣudarśanamākāṅkṣāmi| tadarhasi bhikṣuṃ preṣayitum| atha sa rājā bimbisāro yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śriasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ| ekāntaniṣaṇṇo bhagavantamidamavocad-rudrāyaṇeṇa bhadanta rājñā satyāni dṛṣṭāni| tena mama saṃdiṣṭam-bhikṣudarśanamākāṅkṣāmīti| bhagavān saṃlakṣayati-katamasya bhikṣo rudrāyaṇo rājā saparivāro vineyo raurukanivāsī ca janakāyaḥ ? kātyāyanasya bhikṣuḥ| tatra bhagavānāyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanamāmantrayate-samanvāhara kātyāyana rauruke nagare rūdrāyaṇaṃ rājānaṃ saparivāraṃ raurukanivāsinaṃ ca janakāyam| adhivāsayatyāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ| bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato'ntikātprakrāntaḥ| athāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanastasyā eva rātryā atyayātpūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat| rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā kṛtabhaktakṛtyaḥ paścādbhaktapiṇḍapātapratikrāṇtaḥ paribhuktaṃ śayanaṃ pratiśāmya samādāya pātracīvaraṃ pañcaśataparivāro yena raurukaṃ tena cārikāṃ prakrāntaḥ| rājñā bimbisāreṇa rudrāyaṇasya rājño lekho'nupreṣitaḥ| priyavayasya, eṣa te bhikṣurmayā śāstṛkalpo mahāśrāvako'nupreṣitaḥ| asya tvayārdhatṛtīyāni yojanāni mārgaśobhā kartavyā nagaraśobhā ca| svayameva caturaṅgena balakāyena pratyudgantavyaḥ| pañca vihāraśatāni kartavyāni| pañca mañcapīṭhavṛṣikoccakabimbopadhānacaturasrakaśatāni dātavyāni| pañca piṇḍaśatāni prajñāpayitavyāni| ataste mahataḥ puṇyasyāvāptirbhaviṣyati| tenārdhatṛtīyāni yojanāni mārgaśobhā kṛtā, nagaraśobhā kṛtā, pañca vihāraśatāni, yena ekajanasahasraparivāreṇa ca svayameva pratyudgamya mahatā satkāreṇa rorukaṃ nagaraṃ praveśitaḥ| bahirnagarasya pañca vihāraśatāni kāritāni, pañca mañcapīṭhavṛṣikoccakabimbopadhānacaturasrakaśatāni dāpitāni, pañca piṇḍapātaśatāni prajñaptāni, vistīrṇāvakāśe ca pṛthivīpradeśe āsanaprajñaptiḥ kāritā| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ purastād bhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ| anekāni prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi saṃnipatitāni| kānicitkutūhalajātāni, kānicitpūrvakaiḥ kuśalamulaiḥ saṃcodyamānāni| tata āyuṣmatā mahākātyāyanena tasyāḥ pariṣada āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā anekaiḥ prāṇiśatasahasrairmahāviśeṣo'dhigataḥ| kaiścicchrotāpattiphalam, kaiścidanāgāmiphalam, kaiścitpravrajya sarvakleśsprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam, kaiścicchrāvakabodhau cittānyutpāditāni, kaiścitpratyekāyāṃ bodhau, kaiścidanuttarāyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau| yadbhūyasā sā pariṣadbuddhanimnā dharmapravaṇā saṃghaprāgbhārā vyavasthāpitā||



rauruke nagare tiṣyaḥ puṣyaśca gṛhapatī vasataḥ| tau yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanastenopasaṃkrāntau| upasaṃkramya āyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇau| tiṣyapuṣyau gṛhapatī āyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanamidamavocatām-labhevahi āryamahākātyāyana svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyāmupasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam| careva āryamahākātyāyana bhavato'ntike brahmacaryamiti| tāvāyuṣmatā kātyāyanena pravrajitāvupasaṃpāditau, avavādo dattaḥ| tābhyāṃ yujyamānābhyāṃ vyāyacchamānābhyāṃ ghaṭamānābhyāmidameva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śataśaḥ śatanapatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃsanadharmatayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇadarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| arhantau saṃvṛtau traidhātukavītarāgau samaloṣṭakāñcanāvākāśapāṇisamacittau vāsīcandanakalpau vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośau vidyābhijñāpratisaṃvitprāptau bhavalābhalobhasatkāraparāṅmukhau| sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyau mānyāvabhivādyau ca saṃvṛttau| tau jvalanapatanavarṣaṇavidyotanaprātihāryāṇi kṛtvā nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau parinirvṛtau| tayorjñātṛbhiḥ śarīrapūjāṃ kṛtvā dvau stūpau kāritau-ekastiṣyasya, dvitīyaḥ puṇyasya||



rudrāyaṇo rājā dine dine āyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasyāntikād dharmaṃ śrutvā antaḥ-purasyārocayati-āryo mahākātyāyano madhuramadhuraṃ dharmaṃ deśayati kṣaudramiva madhuraṃ praprīṇayatīti| tāḥ kathayanti- devasya saphalo buddhotpādaḥ| katham ? yena tvaṃ dharmaṃ śṛṇoṣi| yadyevam, yūyaṃ kasmānna śṛṇutha ? deva, hrīmantyaḥ| kathaṃ vayaṃ tatra gatvā dharmaṃ śṛṇumaḥ ? yadyāryo mahākātyāyana ihaivāgatya dharmaṃ deśayet, evaṃ vayamapi śṛṇuyāma iti| rudrāyaṇena rājñā āyuṣmān mahākātyāyana uktaḥ-mama ārya sāntaḥpuramicchati śrotum| sa kathayati-mahārāja, na bhikṣavo'ntaḥpuraṃ praviśya dharmaṃ deśayanti| pratikṣipto bhagavatā antaḥ purapraveśaḥ| ārya, atra ko'ntaḥpurasya dharmaṃ deśayati? mahārāja, bhikṣuṇyaḥ| rudrāyaṇarājñā bimbisārasya rājño lekho'nupreṣitaḥ-priyavayasya, antaḥpuramicchati dharmaṃ śrotum| tadarhasi kāṃcidbhikṣuṇīṃ preṣayitum| bimbisāro rājā taṃ lekhaṃ vācayitvā yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvaikānte niṣaṇṇaḥ| ekāntaniṣaṇṇo rājā bimbisāro bhagavantamidamavocat-rudrāyaṇena bhagavan rājñā lekho'nupreṣitaḥ-antaḥpuramicchati dharmaṃ śrotum| tadarhasi kāṃcidbhikṣuṇīṃ preṣayitumiti| tadatra kathaṃ pratipattavyamiti ? bhagavān saṃlakṣayati-katarasyā bhikṣuṇyā rudrāyaṇasya rājño antaḥpuraparijano vineyo raurukanivāsī ca strījana iti ? paśyati śailāyā bhikṣuṇyāḥ| tatra bhagavāñchailāṃ bhikṣuṇīmāmantrayate-samanvāhara śaile rauruke nagare rudrāyaṇasya rājño'ntaḥpurajanaṃ raurukanivāsinaṃ strījanamiti| evaṃ bhadanteti śailā bhikṣuṇī bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato'ntikāt prakrāntā| atha śailā bhikṣuṇī tasyā eva rātreratyayātpūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā kṛtabhaktakṛtyā paścādbhaktapiṇḍapātapratikrāntā yathāparibhuktaṃ śayanāsanaṃ pratisamayya samādāya pātracīvaraṃ pañcaśataparivārā yena raurukaṃ nagaraṃ tena cārikāṃ prakrāntā| bimbisāreṇa ca rājñā rudrāyaṇasya rājño lekho'nupreṣitaḥ-priyavayasya, eṣā te mayā mahāśrāvikā śāstrānugatā pañcaśataparivārā preṣitā| asyāṃ tvayārthatṛtīyāni yojanāni mārgaśobhā kartavyā nagaraśobhā ca| svayameva ca caturaṅgena balakāyena pratyudgantavyam| abhyantare ca nagarasya pañca vihāraśatāni kārayitavyāni , pañca mañcapīṭhaśatāni, vṛṣikoccabimbopadhānacaturasrakaśatāni dātavyāni, pañca piṇḍapātaśatāni prajñāpayitavyāni| ataste puṇyasyāvāptirbhaviṣyatīti| rudrāyaṇena rājñā lekhaṃ vācayitvā prāmodyajātenārdhatṛtīyāni yojanāni mārgaśobhā kāritā| anekajanasahasraparivāreṇa ca svayameva pratyudgamya mahatāḥ satkāreṇa raurukaṃ nagaraṃ praveśitā| abhyantare ca nagarasya pañca vihāraśatāni kāritāni, pañca mañcapīṭhavṛṣikoṣabimbopadhānacaturasrakaśatāni dāpitāni, pañca piṇḍapātaśatāni prajñaptāni| śailā bhikṣuṇī rudrāyaṇasya rājño'ntaḥpuraṃ praviśya dine dinai dharmaṃ deśayati| rudrāyaṇo rājā vīṇāyāṃ kṛtāvī, candraprabhā devī nṛtye| yāvadapareṇa samayena rudrāyaṇo rājā vīṇāṃ vādayati, candraprabhā devī nṛtyati| tena tasyā nṛtyantyā vināśalakṣaṇaṃ dṛṣṭam| sa tāmitaścāmutaśca nirīkṣya saṃlakṣayati-saptāhasyātyayātkālaṃ kariṣyati| tasya hastādvīṇā srastā, bhūmau nipatitā| candraprabhā devī kathayati-deva, mā maya durnṛtyam ? devi, na tvayā durnṛtyam| api tu mayā tava nṛtyantyā vināśalakṣaṇaṃ dṛṣṭam-saptame divase tava kālakriyā bhavatīti| candraprabhā devī pādayornipatya kathayati-deva yadyevam, kṛtopasthānāhaṃ devasya| yadi devo'nujānīyāt, ahaṃ pravrajeyamiti| sa kathayati-candraprabhe, samayato'nujānāmi| yadi tāvatpravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkaroṣi, eṣa eva te duḥkhāntaḥ| atha sāvaśeṣasaṃyojanā kālaṃ kṛtvā deveṣūpapadyase, devabhūtayā te mamopadarśayitavyamiti| sā kathayati-deva, eva bhavitviti| sā rudrāyaṇena rājñā śailāyā bhikṣuṇyāḥ samarpitā-āryacandraprabhā devī ākāṅkṣati svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyāmupasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣuṇībhāvam| tadarhasi tāṃ pravrājayitumupasaṃpādayitumiti| śailā bhikṣuṇī kathayati-evaṃ bhavatu,pravrājayāmīti| tayāsau pravrājitā upasaṃpāditā ca| samanvāhṛtya cāvavādo dattaḥ- maraṇasaṃjñāṃ bhāvayeti| candraprabhā devī maraṇasaṃjñāṃ bhāvayitumārabdhā| sā saptame divase kālagatā cāturmahārājikeṣu deveṣūpapannā| dharmatā khalu devaputrasya vā devakanyāyā vā aciropapannasya, trīṇi cittānyutpadyante-kutaścyutaḥ. kutropapannaḥ kena karmaṇeti| candraprabhā devakanyā saṃlakṣayati-kuto'haṃ cyutā ? manuṣyebhyaḥ| kutropapannā ? cāturmahyārājikeṣu deveṣu| kena karmaṇā ? bhagavataḥ śāsane brahmacaryaṃ caritveti| tasyā etadabhavat- tadapratirūpaṃ syādyadahaṃ paryuṣitaparivāsā bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkramitum| yannvahamaparyuṣitaparivāsaiva bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmeyamiti| atha candraprabhā devakanyā calavimalakuṇḍaladharā hārārdhahāravibhūṣitagātrī tāmeva rātrīṃ divyānāmutpalakumudapuṇḍarīkamāndāravāṇāmutsaṅgaṃ pūrayitvā sarvaṃ veṇuvanaṃ kalandakakanivāpamudāreṇāvabhāsenāvabhāsya bhagavantaṃ puṣpairavakīrya bhagavataḥ purastānniṣaṇṇā dharmaśravaṇāya| bhagavatā tasyā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāryasatyasaṃprativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā candraprabhayā devakanyayā viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃsatkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhittvā śrotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| sā dṛṣṭasatyā trirudānamudānayati-idamasmākaṃ bhadanta na mātrā kṛtaṃ na rājñā na devatābhirneṣṭairna svajanabandhuvargairna pūrvapretairna śramaṇabrāhmaṇairyadbhagavatāsmākaṃ kṛtam| ucchoṣitā rudhirāśrusamudrāḥ, laṅghitā asthiparvatāḥ, pihitānyapāyadvārāṇi, vivṛtāni svargamokṣadvārāṇi, pratiṣṭhāpitā devamanuṣyeṣu| āha ca-



tavānubhāvātpihitaḥ sughoro

hyapāyamārgo bahuduḥkhayuktaḥ|

apāvṛtā svargagatiḥ supuṇyā

nirvāṇamārgaśca mayopalabdhaḥ||4||



tvadāśrayādāptamapetadoṣaṃ

mamādya śuddhaṃ suviśuddhacakṣuḥ|

prāptaṃ ca śāntaṃ padamāryakāntaṃ

tīrṇaśca duḥkhārṇavapāramasmi||5||



jagati daityanarāmarapūjita

vigatajanmajarāmaraṇāmaya|

bhavasahasradurlabhadarśana

sahalamadya mune tava darśanam||6||



avanamya tataḥ pralambahārā

caraṇau dvāvabhivandya jātaharṣā|

parigamya pradakṣiṇaṃ jitāriṃ

suralokābhimukhī divaṃ jagāma||7||



atha candraprabhā devakanyā vaṇigiva labdhalābhaḥ, sasyasaṃpanna iva karṣakaḥ, śūra iva vijitasaṃgrāmaḥ, sarvarogaparimukta ivāturaḥ, yayā vibhūtyā bhagavatsakāśamāgatā tayaiva vibhūtyā svarbhavanaṃ saṃprasthitā| tasyā evatadabhavat-mayā rudrāyaṇasya rājñaḥ pratijñātamupadarśayiṣyāmīti| atha candraprabhā devakanyā yena rājā rudrāyaṇastenopasaṃkrāntā| tena khalu samayena rudrāyaṇo rājā ekākī gṛhasyoparitalake śayitaḥ| sa tayā udārāvabhāsaṃ kṛtvā acchaṭāśabdena pratibodhitaḥ| sa middhāvasthalocanāparisphuṭo'vijñātaḥ kathayati-kā tvamiti ? sā kathayati-ahaṃ candraprabheti| rājā kathayati-āgaccha, paricārayāma iti| sā kathayati-deva, cyutāhaṃ kālagatā cāturmahārājikeṣu deveṣūpapannā| yadīcchasi mayā sārdhaṃ samāgamam, bhagavato'ntike pravraja| yadi tāvaddṛṣṭadharmā sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkariṣyase, sa eva te'nto duḥkhasya| atha sāvaśeṣasaṃyojanaḥ, kālaṃ kṛtvā cāturmahārājikeṣu deveṣūpapatsyase| tatra te mayā sārdhaṃ samāgamo bhaviṣyati| ityuktvā tatraivāntarhitā| rudrāyaṇo rājā kṛtsnāṃ rātriṃ pravrajyāmanuvicintayan kālyamevotthāya amātyānāmantrayate-paśyata bhavantaḥ, candraprabhā devī kka tiṣṭhatīti ? te kathayanti-deva, kālagateti| rudrāyaṇaḥ saṃlakṣayati-na mama pratirūpaṃ syādyadahaṃ devatācodito'haṃ gṛhī agāramadhyāvaseyam| saṃnidhānī kālaparibhogena vā kāmān paribhuñjīyam| yannvahaṃ śikhaṇḍinaṃ kumāraṃ rāzye'bhiṣicya keśaśmaśrūṇyavatārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇyācchādya samyageva śraddhayā agārādanagārikāṃ pravrajeyamiti| tena hirubhirukāvagrāmātyau dūtenāhūyoktau- bhavantau, yādṛśa eva mama śikhaṇḍī kumāraḥ putraḥ, tādṛśa eva yuvayoḥ| sa yuvābhyāmahitānnivārayitavyo hite ca saṃniyojayitavyaḥ| ahaṃ pravrajāmi svākhyāte dharmavinaye iti| etau sāśrukaṇṭhau vyavasthitau| śikhaṇḍyati kumāro'bhihitaḥ-putra, yathaiva tvaṃ mama vacanaṃ śrotavyaṃ kartavyaṃ manyase, tathā anayorapi hirubhirukayoragrāmātyayorvacanaṃ śrotavyaṃ kartavyaṃ manyethāḥ| ahaṃ pravrajāmi svākhyāte dharmavinaye| iti śrutvā so'pi sāśrukaṇṭho vyavasthitaḥ| tato rudrāyaṇena rājñā rauruke nagare ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇa ṃ kāritam-śṛṇvantu bhavanto raurukanivāsinaḥ paurāḥ nānādeśābhyāgataśca janakāyaḥ| ahaṃ keśaśmaśrūṇyavatārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇyācchādya samyageva śraddhayā agārādanagārikāṃ pravrajiṣyāmi| bhūyaśaḥ-putramāha-putra, tvayā rājyaṃ kārayatā kasyacidaparādhyaṃ na kṣantavyamiti| anuraktapaurajanapado'sau rājā| śrutvā sarva eva raurukanivāsī janakāyo'nyaśca nānādeśābhyāgataḥ sāśrukaṇṭho vyavasthitaḥ| tato rudrāyaṇo rājā śikhaṇḍinaṃ kumāraṃ rājye pratiṣṭhāpya vandhujanaṃ kṣamāpayitvā śramaṇabrāhmaṇakṛpaṇavanīpakebhyo dānāni datvā puṇyāṇi kṛtvā ekena puruṣeṇopasasthāyakena rājagṛhābhimukhaḥ (saṃprasthitaḥ)| tataḥ śikhaṇḍī rājā sāntaḥ-purāmātyapaurajanapado'nyaśca nānādeśābhyāgato janakāyaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ samanubaddhaḥ| so'nekaiḥ prāṇiśatasahasrairanugamyamāno raurukānnagarānniṣkramya anyatamasminnudyāne vividhataruṣaṇḍamaṇḍite nānāpuṣpasalilasaṃpanne haṃsakroñcamayūyaśukasārikākokilajīvaṃjīvakanirghoṣite muhūrtamāsthāya raurukaṃ nagaramavalokya śikhaṇḍinaṃ rājānamāmantrayate-putra, mayā dharmeṇa rājyaṃ kāritam, yena me iyanti prāṇiśatasahaśrāṇi pṛṣṭhato'nubaddhāni| tattvayāpi dharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayitavyamiti| so'pi janakāyaḥ samāśvāsyoktaḥ-bhavantaḥ, eṣa yuṣmākaṃ rājā samanuyukto mayā| nivartata, sukhaṃ prativatsyatha, iatyuktvā saṃprasthitaḥ| rājā śikhaṇḍī sāṇtaḥpurakumārāmātyapaurajanapado'śruparyākulekṣaṇo muhurmuhurnivartya nirīkṣamāṇo raurukaṃ nagaraṃ pratinivṛttaḥ| tato rudrāyaṇo rājā anupūrveṇa rājagṛhaṃ nagaramanuprāptaḥ| tenodyāne sthitvā sa puruṣa uktaḥ-gaccha bhoḥ puruṣa, rājño bimbisārasya gatvā nivedaya-rudrāyaṇo nāma udyāne tiṣṭhatīti| tena puruṣeṇa gatvā rājño bimbisārasya niveditam-deva, rudrāyaṇo rājā udyāne tiṣṭhatīti, sa rājā śrutvā sahasraivothitaḥ pauruṣānāmantrayate- bhavantaḥ mahāsādhano rājā apratisaṃvidita evāgataḥ| na yuṣmākaṃ kenacidvijñāta iti ? sa kathayati-deva, kuto'sya sādhanam ? ātmanā dvitīya āgata iti| rājā bimbisāraḥ saṃlakṣayati-na mama pratirūpaṃ syādyadahaṃ rājānaṃ kṣatriyaṃ mūrdhnābhiṣiktamevameva praveśayeyam| mahatā satkāreṇa praveśayāmīti viditvā mārgaśobhāṃ nagaraśobhāṃ ca kārayitvā caturaṅgena balakāyena pratyudgataḥ| kaṇṭhe pariṣvajya hastiskandhe āropya rājagṛhaṃ mahānagaraṃ praveśitaḥ| nānāgandhaparibhāvitenodakena snāpitaḥ| rājārhairvastrargandhamālyavilepanaiśca samalaṃkṛtya bhojitaḥ| mārgaśrame prativinodite uktaḥ-priyavayasya, sphītaṃ rājyamapāsya antaḥpuraṃ kumārānāmātyān paurajanapadān kimihāgamanaprayojanam ? mā kenacidbhūmyantareṇa rājñā rāṣṭrāvamardanaḥ kṛtaḥ ? kumāreṇa vā kenacidduṣṭāmātyavigrāhitena rājyābhinandinā parākrāntamiti ? sa kathayati-vayasya, ākāṅkṣāmi svākhyāte dharmavinaye parvrajyāmupasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam| iti śrutvā rājā bimbisāra āttamanāḥ pravrakāyamabhyunnamayya dakṣiṇabāhumabhiprasāryodānamudānayati-aho buddhaḥ, aho dharmaḥ, aho saṃghaḥ aho dharmasya svākhyātatā, yatredānīmevaṃvidhāḥ puruṣāḥ sphītaṃ rājyamapahāya sphītamantaḥpuraṃ vistīrṇasvajanabandhuvargaṃ sphītāni ca kośakoṣṭhāgārāṇyapahāya ākāṅkṣante svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyāmupasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam| ityuktvā rājānaṃ rudrāyaṇaṃ samādāya yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| tena khalu samayena bhagavānanekaśatāyā bhikṣuparṣadaḥ purastānniṣaṇṇo dharmaṃ deśayati| adrākṣīdbhagavān rājānaṃ māgadhaṃ śreṇyaṃ bimbisāraṃ dūrādeva| dṛṣṭvā ca punarbhikṣūnāmantrayate sma-eṣa bhikṣavo rājā bimbisāraḥ saprābhṛta āgacchati| nāsti tathāgatasyaivaṃvidhaḥ prābhṛto yathā vineyaprābhṛtaḥ| ityuktvā tūṣṇīmavasthitaḥ| rājā bimbisāro bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvaikānte niṣaṇṇaḥ| ekāntaniṣaṇṇo rājā bimbisāro bhagavantamidamavocat-ayaṃ bhadanta rājā rudrāyaṇa ākāṅkṣate svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyāmupasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam| taṃ bhagavān pravrājayatu, upasaṃpādayatu anukampāmupādāyeti| sa bhagavatā ehibhikṣukayā ābhāṣitaḥ-ehi bhikṣo, cara brahmacaryamiti| sa bhagavato vācāvasāne eva muṇḍaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ saṃghāṭīprāvṛtaḥ pātrakaravyagrahasto varṣaśatopasaṃpannaśya bhikṣorīryāpathenāvasthitaḥ||



ehīti coktaḥ sa tathāgatena

muṇḍaśca saṃghāṭiparivṛtadehaḥ|

sadyaḥ praśāntendriya eva tasthau

evaṃ sthito buddho manorathena||8||



āyuṣmān rudrāyaṇaḥ pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat| sa mahājanakāyena dṛṣṭah| eṣa ca śabdo rājagṛhe nagare samantato visṛtaḥ-rudrāyaṇo rājā bhagavatā pravrājitaḥ, sa rājagṛhaṃ bhikṣārthī praviṣṭaḥ| iti śrutvā anekāni prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi saṃnipatitāni| antarbhavanavicāriṇyo'pi yoṣito vātāyanagavākṣavedikāsvavasthitā nirīkṣitumārabdhāḥ| amātyai rājño bimbisārasya niveditam-deva, rudrāyaṇo rājā rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya praviṣṭo'nekaiḥ prāṇīśatasahasraiḥ parivṛtastiṣṭhatīti| śrutvā ca punā rājā bimbisāro yena rudrāyaṇo bhikṣustenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramya rudrāyaṇaṃ bhikṣumidamavocat-



bhuktvā grāmasahasrāṇi raurukaṃ ca narādhipa|

utsṛṣṭaṃ piṇḍameṣāṇaḥ kaccinna paritapyase||9||



bhuktvā śatapale pātre sauvarṇe rājate'tha vā|

bhuñjāno mṛnmaye pātre kaccinna paritapyase||10||



śālīnāmodanaṃ bhuktvā śuci māṃsopasevitam|

bhuñjānaḥ śuṣkakulmāṣān kaccinna paritapyase||11||



hitvā kauśeyakarpāsān kṣaumaṃ kauṭumbakāśikān|

dhārayan pāṃśukūlāni kaccinna paritapyase||12||



kūṭāgāre śayitvā tvaṃ nirvāte sparśitāgate|

āsīno vṛkṣamūleṣu kaccinna paritapyase||13||



paryaṅke'vaśayitvā tvaṃ mṛduke tūlasaṃnibhe|

tṛṇasaṃstare śayānaḥ kaccinnaḥ paritapyase||14||



bhāryāṃ sadṛśikāṃ hṛdyāmāśravāṃ vai priyaṃvadām|

rudantīṃ viprahāya tvaṃ kaccinna paritapyase||15||



yānaistvaṃ hastigrīvābhiraśvairapi rathairapi|

padbhyāṃ paribhraman bhūmau kaccinna paritapyase||16||



koṣṭhāgārāṇi kośaṃ ca bahuvittaṃ prahāya vai|

ākiṃcanyamanuprāptaḥ kaccinnaḥ paritapyase||17|| iti|



rudrāyaṇaḥ prāha-

anṛddhirdamayatyenaṃ sacedbhavati durdamaḥ|

parabhojanabhuñjānaḥ kathaṃ damayate yugam||18|| iti|



rājā bimbisāraḥ prāha-

kiṃ nu tvaṃ durmanā rājan kiṃ dīna iva bhāṣase|

dadabhyupārdharājyaṃ te bhuṅkṣva bhogaparāyaṇa||19||



kiṃnu tvaṃ durmanā rājan kiṃ dīna iva bhāṣase|

dadāmi pravarān bhogān yān kāṃścinmanasecchasi||20|| iti|



rudrāyaṇaḥ prāha-

na rājan kṛpaṇo loke dharmakāyena saṃspṛśet|

deva tripathanirāśī (?) dhruvaṃ tasya vidhīyate||21||



yastu dharmavirāgārthamadharme nirato nṛpaḥ|

sa rājan kṛpaṇo jñeyastamastamaḥparāyaṇaḥ||22||



śṛṇu me tvaṃ mahārāja dharmatāṃ deśayāmyaham|

śrutvā dharmaṃ tato jñeyo yadi tvaṃ prītimeṣyasi||23||



nirguṇasya śarīrasya eka eva mahāguṇaḥ|

yathā yathā vidhāryaṃ te tattathaivānuvartate|| 24||



daśeme varṣadaśāḥ puruṣasyāsu nirucyate|

krīḍā tatra ratiḥ kā vā putraparadhaneṣu vā||25||



putrādveṣiṇīyāmāhurbhāryayā kṛtirucyate|

śaurā dhanaṃ prārthayante rājan mukto'smi bandhanāt||26||



na bhaiṣajyāni trāyante na dhanaṃ jñātayo na ca|

na sarvavidyā na balaṃ na śauryaṃ trāyate'ntakāt||27||



devāpi santīha mahānubhāvāḥ

sthāneṣvihocceṣu cirāyuṣo'pi|

āyuḥkṣayānte'pi tataścyavante

mucyeta ko neha śarīrabhedāt||28||



rājyāni kṛtvāpi mahānubhāvā

vṛṣṇyandhakāḥ kuravaśca pāṇḍavāśca|

saṃpannacittāṃ yaśasā jvalantaḥ

te na śaktā maraṇaṃ nopagantum||29||



na saṃyamena tapasā na rājan

na karmaṇā vīryaparākrameṇa vā|

na vittapūgairna dhanairudāraiḥ

śakyaṃ kadācinmaraṇādvimoktum||30||



naivāntarīkṣe na samudramadhye

na parvatānāṃ vivaraṃ praviśya|

na vidyate sa pṛthivīpradeśo

yatra sthitaṃ na prasaheta mṛtyuḥ||31||



naivāntarīkṣe na samudramadhye

na parvatānāṃ vivaraṃ praviśya|

na vidyate sa pṛthivīpradeśo

yatra sthitaṃ na prasaheta karma||32||



yānīmānyapaviddhāni vikṣiptāni diśo daśa|

kapotavarṇānyasthīni tāni dṛṣṭveha kā ratiḥ||33||



imāni yānyupasthānāni alāburiva serabhe|

śaṅkhavarṇāni śīrṣāṇi tāni dṛṣṭveha kā ratiḥ||34||



yamātape chādayase śīte yamupagūhase|

evaṃ te priyamātmānaṃ rājan mṛtyurhaniṣyati||35||



yāvanmṛtyorvaśaṃ bhuṅkte paridhatte dadāti vā|

taddhi tasya svakaṃ jñeyamanyannityaṃ vigacchati||36||



asādhāraṇamanyeṣāmaśaurāharaṇaṃ nidhim|

martyo nidahyāddānena anyena sukṛtena vā||37||



purā hi tvāṃ vyāghra iva mṛgaṃ nihatya

vyādhirjarā karṣati antakaśca|

na te mitrāṇyapaneṣyanti rogaṃ

saṃgamya sodaryagaṇāśca sarve||38||



yadeva labdhādhikamasya bhavati

dhanaṃ dhānyaṃ rajataṃ jātarūpam|

dāyādyamevānuvicintayanti

putrāḥ sadārā anujīvinaśca||39||



sacedṛṇaṃ bhavati piturmṛtasya

priyāḥ sutā nāsya vahniṃ viśanti

mṛtyau na vāpyaśrumukhā rudanti

rāhuḥ pitā mama kāryateti (?)||40||



āyāntu sattvāḥ pitā mameti

prakīrṇakeśāśrumukhā rudanti|

jyotiścāsya purato haranti

hyaho batāyamamaro bhavediti|| 41||



dūṣyairenaṃ prāvṛtaṃ nirharanti

jyotiḥ samādāya ( ca taṃ) dahanti|

sa dahyate jñātibhī rudyamāna

ekena vasreṇa vihāya bhogam||42||



eko hyayaṃ jāyate jāyamāna-

stathā mriyate mriyamāṇo'yamekaḥ|

eko duḥkhānanubhavatīha jantu-

rna vidyate saṃsarataḥ sahāyaḥ||43||



etacca dṛṣṭveha parivrajanti

kulāyakāste na bhavanti santaḥ|

te sarvasaṃgānabhisaṃprahāya

na garbhaśayyāṃ punarāvasanti||44|| iti|



atha bimbisāro rājā rudrāyaṇena bhikṣuṇā uttarottareṇa pratibhānena nirākṛtastūṣṇīṃ niṣpratibhaḥ prakrāntaḥ||



atha śikhaṇḍī rājā yāvatkaṃciddharmeṇa ājyaṃ kārayitvā adharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayitumārabdhaḥ| sa hirubhirukābhyāmuktaḥ-deva, dharmeṇa rājyaṃ kāraya, mā adharmeṇa| tatkasya hetoḥ ? puṣpaphalavṛkṣasadṛśā deva janapadāḥ| tadyathā deva puṣpavṛkṣāḥ phalavṛkṣāśca kālena kālaṃ samyakparipālyamānā anuparataprayogeṇa yathākālaṃ puṣpāṇi phalāni cānuprayacchanti, evameva janapadāṃ pratipālyamānā anuparataprayogeṇa yathākālaṃ karapratyāyānanuprayacchantīti| sa tābhyāṃ nivārito yāvattāvaddharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayitvā punarapyadharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayitumārabdhaḥ| sa tābhyāṃ yāvat trirapyuktaḥ| visāriṇī kṛ (tṛ ?) ṣṇā| nivāryamāṇā nāvatiṣṭhate| ruṣito'mātyānāmantrayate - yo bhavanto rājñaḥ kṣatriyasya mūrdhābhiṣiktasya yāvat trirapyājñāṃ prativahati, tasya kīdṛśo daṇḍa iti| tatra kecidduṣṭāmātyāḥ kathayanti-deva, kimatra jñātavyam ? tasya vadho daṇḍa iti| gāthe ca bhāṣante-



amātyasya ca duṣṭasya dantasya calitasya ca|

bhojanasya ca (ajīrṇasya ) nānyatroddharaṇātsukham||45||



amātyaṃ buddhisaṃpattiprajñāvinayakovidam|

kośasthaṃ ca balasthaṃ ca yo na hanyātsa ghātyate||46|| iti|



śikhaṇḍī rājā kathayati-bhavantaḥ, mamaitau pitrā saṃnyastau| nāhametau praghātayāmi| kiṃ tvābhyāṃ mama darśanapathe na sthātavyamiti| tayordvāraṃ nivāritam| anyau dvau duṣṭāmātyau sthāpitau| tau kathayataḥ-deva, nākranditā nāluñcitā nātaptā notpīḍitāstilāstailaṃ prayacchanti, tadvannarapate janapadā iti| rājā kathayati-yadetābhyāṃ kṛtam, tatparaṃ pramāṇamiti| tau janapadān pīḍayitumārabdhau| yāvadanyatamo vaṇik paṇyamādāya raurukānnagarād rājagṛhamanuprāptaḥ| sa āyuṣmatā rudrāyaṇena dṛṣṭaḥ|



kaccicchikhaṇḍī khalu raurukeṣu

sabhṛtyavargo balavānarogaḥ|

dharmeṇa vā kārayati svarājyaṃ

na cāsya kaścitparatopasargaḥ||47|| iti|



sa kathayati-

tathyaṃ śikhaṇḍī khalu raurukeṣu

sabhṛtyavargo balavānarogaḥ|

na cāsya kaścitparatopasargo

adharmeṇa tu rājyaṃ karoti nityam|| 48||



athāyuṣmān rudrāyaṇo'nupūrvyā praṣṭumārabdhaḥ-kastatrāmātyapradhānaḥ ? kasya śikhaṇḍī vaśena janapadān pīḍayatīti ? sa kathayati-deva, hirubhirukayoramātyayordvāraṃ nivārya anyau duṣṭāmātyau sthāpitau| tadvaśena śikhaṇḍī janapadān pīḍayatīti| rudrāyaṇaḥ kathayati-gaccha tvaṃ bhoḥ puruṣa, raurukanivāsinaṃ janakāyaṃ samāśvāsaya| ahamapi tatra pracārite gamiṣyāmi| ahamenaṃ śikhaṇḍinamahitānnivārayiṣyāmi, hite ca saṃniyojayiṣyāmīti| sa vaṇik paṇyaṃ visarjayitvā pratipaṇyamādāya saṃprasthito'nupūrveṇa raurukamanuprāptaḥ| tena jñātīnāṃ rahasi niveditam- bhavantaḥ, ahaṃ paṇyamādāya rājagṛhaṃ gataḥ| tatra mayā vṛddharājo dṛṣṭaḥ| sa kathayati-ahaṃ pracāritaṃ raurukaṃ gamiṣyāmi, śikhaṇḍinaṃ cāhitānnivārayiṣyāmi, hite ca saṃniyojayiṣyāmi yathā janapadānna pīḍayatīti| tairapareṣāmārocitam, tairapyapareṣām| evaṃ karṇaparaṃparayā sa śabdastayorduṣṭāmātyayoḥ karṇaṃ gataḥ| tau saṃlakṣayataḥ- yadi vṛddharājā āgamiṣyati, niyatamasau bhūyo hirubhirukāvagrāmātyau sthāpayiṣyati, āvayośvānarthaṃ kārayiṣyati| tadupāyasaṃvidhānaṃ ca kartavyaṃ yenāsāvantamārgaṃ eva praghātyata iti| tābhyāṃ rājñaḥ śikhaṇḍina ārocitam-deva, śrūyate vṛddharājā āgacchatīti| sa kathayati-pravrajito'sau| kimarthaṃ tasyāgamanaprayojanamiti ? tau kathayataḥ - deva, yenaikadivasamapi rājyaṃ kāritam, sa vinā rājyenābhiraṃsyata iti kuta etat? punarapyasau rājyaṃ kārayitukāma iti| śikhaṇḍī kathayati-yadyasau rājā bhaviṣyati, ahaṃ sa eva kumāraḥ| ko nu virodha iti ? tau kathayataḥ-deva, apratirūpametat| kathaṃ nāma kumārāmātyapaurajanapadaurañjalisahasrairnamasyamānena rājyaṃ kārayitvā punarapi kumāravāsena vastavyam ? varaṃ deśaparityāgo na tu kumāravāsena vāsam| tadyathāpi nāma puruṣo hastigrīvāyāṃ gatvā aśvapṛṣṭhena gacchet, aśvapṛṣṭhena gatvā rathena gacchet, rathena gatvā pādābhyāmeva gacchet, evameva rājyaṃ kārayitvā punaḥ kumāravāsena vāsa iti| sa tābhyāṃ vipralabdhaḥ kathayati-kimatra yuktam ? kathaṃ pratipattavyamiti ? tau kathayataḥ -deva, praghātayitavyo'sau| yadi na praghātyate, niyataṃ duṣṭāmātyavigrāhito devaṃ praghātayatīti| sa evamukte hīnadīnavadano muhūrtaṃ tūṣṇīṃ sthitvā bāṣpoparudhyamānahṛdayaḥ karuṇadīnavipambitairakṣaraiḥ sa kathayati-bhavantau, kathaṃ pitaraṃ praghātayāmīti ? tau kathayataḥ-na devena śrutam ?



pitā vā yadi vā bhrātā putro vā svāṅganiḥsṛtaḥ|

pratyanīkeṣu varteta kartavyā bhūmivardhanā (?)||49|| iti|



punarapyāha-

yasya putrasahasraṃ syādekānāvādhirūḍhakam|

ekaśca tatra śatruḥ syāttadarthe tānnimajjayet||50|| iti|



anyatrāpyuktam -

tyajedekaṃ kulasyārthe grāmasyārthe kulaṃ tyajet|

grāmaṃ janapadasyārthe ātmārthe pṛthivīṃ tyajet||51|| iti|



deva , nātra kiṃcittapanīyam| vadhārho'sau praghātayitavyaḥ| yadi devo'tra vilambate, yaddevasyānuraktāḥ kumārāmātyapaurajanapadāste kṣobhamāpannā niyatamanarthaṃ kurvantīti| kāmān khalu partisevamānasya nāsti kiṃcitpāpaṃ karmākaraṇīyamiti tenādhivāsitam-evaṃ kriyatāmiti| tau duṣṭāmātyau hṛṣṭatuṣṭau pramuditau vadhakapuruṣānutsāhayataḥ-bhavantaḥ, gacchata, vṛddharājaṃ praghātayata| bhogairvaḥ saṃvibhāgaṃ kariṣyāma iti| anuraktapaurajānapadaḥ sa rājā| na kaścidutsahate praghātayitum| tābhyāṃ te hiraṇyasuvarṇagrāmapradānādinā protsāhitā na pratipadyante| tatastābhyāṃ krodhaparyavasthitābhyāṃ cārapālānāmājñā dattā-gacchantu, bhavantaḥ etān puruṣān saputradārān sasuhṛtsaṃbandhibāndhavāṃścārake baddhvā sthāpayateti| te śrutvā bhītāḥ saṃpratipannāḥ kathayanti-deva, alaṃ krodhena| bhṛtyā vayamājñākarāḥ| gacchāma iti| te tīkṣṇānasīn kakṣeṇādāya saṃprasthitāḥ| āyuṣmānapi rudrāyaṇastrayāṇāṃ māsānāmatyayātkṛtacīvaro niṣṭhitacīvaraḥsamādāya pātracīvaraṃ yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavantamidamavocat-icchāmyahaṃ bhadanta raurukaṃ nagaraṃ janapadacārikāṃ caritumiti| bhagavānāha-gaccha rudrāyaṇa, karmasvakatā te manasikartavyeti| athāyuṣmān rudrāyaṇo bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato'ntikāt prakrāntaḥ| āyuṣmān rudrāyaṇastasyā eva rātretyayāt pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramāāya rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat| rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā kṛtabhaktakṛtyaḥ pañcādbhaktapiṇḍapātraḥ pratikrānto yathāparibhuktaṃ śayanāsanaṃ pratisāmayya samādāya pātracīvaraṃ karmabalapreritam-



dūraṃ hi karṣate karma dūrātkarma prakarṣate|

tatra prakarṣate jantuṃ yatra karma vipacyate||52||



iti yena raurukaṃ tena cārikāṃ prakrāntaḥ| anupūrveṇa cārikāṃ carannantarmārge'nyatamaṃ karvaṭakaṃ piṇḍāya praviṣṭaḥ| sa ca tasmāt piṇḍapātamaṭitvā niṣkrāmati| te ca vadhakapuruṣāḥ saṃprāptāḥ| sa tairdṛṣṭaḥ| tenāpi te pratyabhijñātāḥ| sataiḥ puruṣaiḥ sārdhamekasminevodyāne rātriṃdivā samupagataḥ| sa tān praṣṭumārabdhaḥ -



kaccicchikhaṇḍī khalu raurukeṣu

sabhṛtyavargo balavānarogaḥ|

dharmeṇa vā kārayati svakaṃ rājyaṃ

na cāsya kaccitparatopasargaḥ||53|| iti|



te kathayati-deva,

tathyaṃ śikhaṇḍī khalu raurukeṣu

sabhṛtyavargo balavānarogaḥ|

na cāsya kaścitparatopasargaḥ

adharmarājyaṃ tu karoti nityam||54||



naravara yattava sadṛśaṃ kṛtaṃ tvayā āryaparābhavacihnakaram|

tasyāpi tu yatsadṛśaṃ tadadya upalapsyase saumyeti||55||



āyuṣmān rudrāyaṇaḥ kathayati-bhavantaḥ, kimasau mama tatra gamanaṃ nābhinandatīti ? te kathayanti-deva, nābhinandatīti| sa kathayati-bhavantaḥ, yadyevaṃ na gacchāmi, pratinivartāmīti| te gāthāṃ bhāṣante-



kka yāsyasi tvaṃ naravīra bhūyo

na te suto nandati jīvitena|

vayaṃ hyadhanyā nṛpasaṃprayuktā

ihābhyupetāstava ghātanāya||56|| iti||



āyuṣmān rudrāyaṇaḥ kathayati-bhavantaḥ, yūyaṃ nāma mama vadhakapuruṣāḥ ? deva, vadhakapuruṣāḥ| sa saṃlakṣayati-yattaduktaṃ bhagavatā karmasvakatā te rudrāyaṇa manasikartavyeti, idaṃ tat| sarvathā dhik saṃsārabhaṅguramiti viditvā teṣāṃ kathayati-bhadramukhāḥ, ahamasmi yadarthaṃ pravajitaḥ, so'rtho mayā na saṃprātaḥ| tiṣṭhati tāvanmuhūrtaṃ yāvatsvakāryamanurūpaṃ gacchāmīti| te parasparaṃ saṃjalpaṃ kṛtvā kathayanti-deva, evaṃ kuru| athāyuṣmān rudrāyaṇo'nyatamaṃ vṛkṣamūlaṃ niśritya suptoragarājabhogaparipiṇḍitaṃ paryaṅkaṃ baddhvā śānteneryāpathenāvasthitaḥ| uktaṃ bhagavatā-pañcānuśaṃsā bāhuśrutye -skandhakuśalo bhavati dhātukuśala āyatanakuśalaḥ pratītyasamutpādakuśalaḥ, aparapratibaddhā cāsya bhavatyavavādānuśāsanīti| tena vīryamārabhya idameva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śatanapatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃsanadharmatayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| arhan saṃvṛttastraidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāpratisaṃvitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasatkāraparāṅmukhaḥ| sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo'bhivādyaśca saṃvṛttaḥ| athāyuṣmān rudrāyaṇo'rhattvaprāpto vimuktiprītisukhapratisaṃvedī tasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthāṃ bhāṣate-



mukto granthaiśca yogaiśca śalyairnīvaraṇaistathā|

adyāpyudrāyaṇo bhikṣū rājadharmairna mucyate||57|| iti|



ityuktvā tān vadhakapuruṣānuvāca-bhadramukhāḥ, yaṃ mayā prāptavyaṃ tatprāptam| idānīṃ yadarthaṃ yūyamāgatāstadarthaṃ saṃprāpayateti| te kathayanti-deva, yadi śikhaṇḍī rājā asmān pṛcchati-kiṃ vṛddharājena maraṇasamaye vyākṛtamiti, kimasmābhirvaktavyam ? bhadramukhāḥ, sa vaktavyaḥ-



bahvapuṇyaṃ prasavase rājyahetoḥ piturvadhāt|

ahaṃ ca parinirvāsye tvaṃ cāvīciṃ gamiṣyasi||58|| iti|



idaṃ cāparaṃ vaktavyaḥ-dve tvayā ānantarye karmaṇi kṛte-yacca pitā jīvitād vyaparopitaḥ, yaccārhan bhikṣuḥ kṣīṇāśravaḥ| te'vīcau mahānarake vastavyam| atyayamatyayato deśaya, apyetatkarma tanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gacchediti| punarāyuṣmān rudrāyaṇaḥ saṃlakṣayati- ṛddhyā gacchāmi| mamāsau sattvo narakaparāyaṇo bhaviṣyatīti| yaṃ yaṃ ṛddhyupāyaṃ prārabhate, tasya dharmavinaṣṭatvād ṛkāro'pi na pratibhāti prāgeva ṛddhiḥ| tatasteṣāmekena puruṣeṇa nirghṛṇahṛdayena tyaktaparalokena kakṣādasiṃ niṣkṛṣya utkṛttamūlaṃ śiraḥ kṛtvā pṛthitvyāṃ nipātitaḥ||



atha bhagavān smitamakārṣīt| dharmatā khalu yasmin samaye buddhā bhagavantaḥ smitaṃ prāviṣkurvanti, tasmin samaye nīlapītalohitāvadātā arciṣo mukhānniścārya kāścidadhastādgacchanti, kāścidupariṣṭādgacchanti| yā adhastādgacchanti, tāḥ saṃjīvaṃ kālasūtraṃ saṃghātaṃ rauravaṃ mahārauravaṃ tapanaṃ pratāpanamavīcimarbudaṃ nirarbudamaṭaṭaṃ hahavaṃ huhuvamutpalaṃ padmaṃ mahāpadmaṃ narakaṃ gatvā ye uṣṇanarakāsteṣu śītībhūtvā nipatanti, ye śītanarakāsteṣūṣṇībhūtvā nipatanti| tena teṣāṃ sattvānāṃ kāraṇāviśeṣāḥ pratiprasrabhyante| teṣāmevaṃ bhavati-kiṃ nu vayaṃ bhavanta itaścyutāḥ, āhosvidanyatropapannā iti| teṣāṃ prasādasaṃjananārthaṃ bhagavānnirmitaṃ visarjayati| teṣāṃ nirmitaṃ dṛṣṭvaivaṃ bhavati -na hyeva vayaṃ bhavanta itaścyutāḥ, nāpyanyatropapannāḥ| api tvayamapūrvadarśanaḥ sattvaḥ| asyānubhāvenāsmākaṃ kāraṇāviśeṣāḥ pratiprasrabdhā iti| te nirmite cittamabhiprasādya taṃ narakanivedanīyaṃ karma kṣapayitvā devamanuṣyeṣu pratisaṃdhiṃ gṛhṇanti yatra satyānāṃ bhājanabhūtā bhavanti| yā upariṣṭādgacchanti, tāścāturmahārājikāṃstrāyastriṃśān yāmāṃstuṣitānnirmāṇaratīn parinirmitavaśavartino brahmakāyikān brahmapurohitān brahmapārṣadyān mahābrahmaṇaḥ parīttābhānapramāṇābhānābhāsvarān parīttaśubhānapramāṇaśubhāñchubhakṛtsnānanabhrakān puṇyaprasavān bṛhatphalānabṛhānatapān sudṛśān sudarśanānakaniṣṭhān devān gatvā anityaṃ duḥkhaṃ śūnyamanātmetyuddhoṣayanti| gāthādvayaṃ ca bhāṣante-



ārabhadhvaṃ niṣkrāmata yujyadhvaṃ buddhaśāsane|

dhunītaḥ mṛtyunaḥ sainyaṃ naḍāgāramiva kuñjaraḥ|| 59||



yo hyasmin dharmavinaye apramattaścariṣyati|

prahāya jātisaṃsāraṃ duḥkhasyāntaṃ kariṣyati||60||



atha tā arciṣastrisāhasramahāsāhasraṃ lokadhātumanvāhiṇḍya bhagavantameva pṛṣṭhataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ samanugacchanti| tadyadi bhagavānatītaṃ karma vyākartukāmo bhavati, bhagavataḥ pṛṣṭhato'ntardhīyante| anāgataṃ cet purastāt| narakopapattiṃ cet pādatale| tiryagupapattiṃ cet pārṣṇyām| pretopapattiṃ cet pādāṅguṣṭhe| manuṣyopapattiṃ cejjānunoḥ| balacakravartirājyaṃ cedvāme karatale| cakravartirājyaṃ ceddakṣiṇe karatale| devopapattiṃ cennābhyām| śrāvakabodhiṃ cedāsye| pratyekāṃ bodhiṃ cedūrṇāyām| yadyanuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati uṣṇīṣe'ntardhīyante| atha tā arciṣo bhagavantaṃ triḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya bhagavataḥ pādatale'ntarhitāḥ| athāyuṣmānānandaḥ kṛtakarapuṭo bhagavantaṃ papraccha-



nānāvidho raṅgasahasracitro

vaktrāntarānniṣkasitaḥ kalāpaḥ|

avabhāṣitā yena diśaḥ samantā-

ddivākareṇodayatā yathaiva||61||



gāthāṃ ca bhāṣate-

vigatodbhavā dainyamadaprahīṇā

buddhā jagatyuttamahetubhūtāḥ|

nākāraṇaṃ śaṅkhamṛṇālagauraṃ

smitamupadarśayanti jinā jitārayaḥ||62||



tatkālaṃ svayamadhigamya dhīra buddhyā

śrotṝṇāṃ śramaṇa jinendra kāṅkṣitānām|

dhīrābhirmunivṛṣa vāgbhiruttamābhi-

rutpannaṃ vyapanaya saṃśayaṃ śubhābhiḥ||63||



nākasmāllavaṇajalādrirājadhairyāḥ

saṃbuddhāḥ smitamupadarśayanti nāthāḥ|

yasyārthe smitamupadarśayanti dhīrā-

staṃ śrotuṃ samabhilaṣanti te janaughāḥ|| 64|| iti|



bhagavānāha-evametadānanda, evametad| nāhetvapratyayamānanda tathāgatā arhantaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhāḥ smitaṃ prāviṣkurvanti | api tvānanda,



mukto granthaiśca yogaiśca śalyernīvaraṇaistathā|

athāpi rudrāyaṇo bhikṣurjīvitād vyaparopitaḥ||65||



rudrāyaṇa ānanda arhattvaṃ prāpto jīvitād vyaparopitaḥ| śrutvā āyuṣmānānandaḥ sāśrukaṇṭho vyavasthitaḥ| atha te adhakapuruṣā āyuṣmato rudrāyaṇasya pātracīvaraṃ khikkhiraṃ cādāya raurukamanuprāptāḥ| taistayorduṣṭāmātyayorniveditam-vṛddharājaḥ praghātita iti| tau śrutvā prītiprāmodyajātau yena śikhaṇḍī rājā tenopasaṃkrāntau| kathayataḥ-deva, diṣṭyā vardhase| idānīṃ devasyākaṇṭakaṃ rājyam| kathaṃ kṛtvā ? yo devasya śatruḥ, sa praghātitaḥ| ko nāma śatruḥ ? deva, vṛddharājaḥ| kathaṃ jñāyate'sau praghātita iti ? tābhyāṃ te vadhakapuruṣā darśitāḥ-deva, ime te badhakapuruṣā yairasau praghātitaḥ| śikhaṇḍinā rājñā te pṛṣṭāḥ-bhavantaḥ, kiyadvṛddharājasya balam| deva, kutastasya balam ? idaṃ pātracīvaraṃ khikkhiraṃ ceti| śikhaṇḍī rājā mūrcchitaḥ pṛthitvāṃ nipatito jalapariṣekapratyāgataprāṇaḥ kathayati-bhavantaḥ, kiṃ vṛddharājena maraṇakāle vyākṛtam ? deva, vṛddhārājaḥ prāṇaviyogaḥ kathayati-



bahvapuṇyaṃ prasavase rājyahetoḥ piturvadhāt|

ahaṃ ca parinirvāsye tvaṃ cāvīciṃ gamiṣyasi||66||



iti| idaṃ cāparaṃ vaktavyaḥ-dve tvaya ānantarye karmaṇī kṛte-yacca pitā jīvitād vyaparopitaḥ, yaccārhan bhikṣuḥ kṣīṇāśravaśca| ciraṃ te'vīcau mahānarake vastavyam| atyayamatyayato deśaya| apyevaitatkarma tanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādāna gacchediti| manaḥśokaśalyenābhyāhato haritalūna iva naḍo mlāyitumārabdhaḥ| tena hirubhirukāvagrāmātyāvāhūyoktaubhavantau, na yuvābhyāmahamīdṛśakarma kurvāṇo nivārita iti ? tau kathayataḥ-vayaṃ devenādarśanapathe vyavasthāpitāḥ| kathaṃ nivārayāma iti ? tenai tau duṣṭāmātyau adarśanapathe vyavasthāpitau| bhūyo hirubhirukāvagrāmātyau sthāpitau| tābhyāmapi duṣṭāmātyābhyāṃ pracchannaṃ tiṣyapuṣyastūpayordve bile kṛtvā dvau biḍālapotakau sthāpitau| tayordine dine māṃsapeśīrdattvā śikṣayataḥ-tiṣyapuṣyau, yena satyena satyavacanena yuvābhyāṃ māyayā lokaṃ vañcayitvā śraddhādeyaṃ vinipātya pratyavarayāṃ biḍālayonāvupapannau, tena satyena satyavacanena māṃsapeśīṃ kṛtvā svakasvakaṃ stūpaṃ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya svakasvakaṃ bilaṃ praviśatāmiti| tau tadā suśikṣitau saṃvṛtau, tadā tābhyāṃ duṣṭāmātyābhyāṃ rudrāyaṇasya rājño devī uktā-devi, putraste kṛśāluko durbalako mlāno'prāptakāyaḥkimadhyupekṣasa iti ? sā kathayati-kimahaṃ karomīti ? yuvābhyāmevāsāvīdṛśakarma kārita iti| tau kathayataḥ-devi, yatra ghaṭaḥ patitaḥ, kiṃ tatra rajjyurapi pātayitavyā ? sā kathayati-satyametatpiturvadham| tadahaṃ tasya prativinodayāmi| arhadvadhaṃ kaḥ prativinodayiṣyatīti ? tau kathayataḥ-devi, vayamarhadvadhaṃ prativinodayāma iti| sā kathayati-yadyevam, śobhanam| sā tasya sakāśaṃ gatvā kathayati-putra, kasmāttvamutpāṇḍūtpāḍuḥ kṛśāluko durbalako mlāno'prāptakāya iti ? sa kathayati amba, tvamapyevaṃ kathayasi-kasmāttvamutpāḍūtpāṇḍuḥ kṛśāluko durbalo mlāno'prāptakāya iti, kamathahaṃ notpāṇḍūtpāṇḍuko bhavāmi kṛśāluko durbalako mlāno'prāptakāya iti, yena mayā duṣṭāmātyavigrāhitena dve ānantarye karmaṇī kṛte-yacca pitā jīvitādvyaparopito yaccārhan bhikṣuḥ kṣīṇāśravaḥ ? ciramavīcau mahānarake vastavyamiti| sā kathayati-putra, abhayaṃ tāvatprayaccha, yatsaryaṃ tatkathayāmīti| sa kathayati-dattaṃ bhavatu| sā kathayati-yathābhūtaṃ putra, nāsau tava pitā, kiṃ tu mayā ṛtusnātayā anyena puruṣeṇa sārdhaṃ paricaritam, tatastvaṃ jāta iti| sa saṃlakṣayati-pitṛvadhastāvanna jātaḥ| iti viditvā kathayati-amba, yadyevaṃ pitṛvadho nāsti, arhadvadho'sti| sa kathaṃ nistārya iti ? sā kathayati-putra, jñānakovidāḥ praṣṭavyāḥ| te etadekāntīkariṣyantīti uktvā prakrāntā| tayā tau duṣṭāmātyau āhūyoktau-mayā asya pitṛvadho vinoditaḥ| yuvāmidānīmarhadvadhaṃ prativinodayatāmiti| śikhaṇḍīnā rājñā amātyānāmājñā dattā, sarvāmātyān saṃnipātayata ye ca kecijjñānakovidā iti| taiḥ sarvāmātyāḥ saṃnipātitāḥ, ye ca kecijjñānakovidāḥ| tāvapi duṣṭāmātyau tatraiva saṃnipatitau| sarva eva rājopajīvī loko'nukūlaṃ vaktumārabdhaḥ| tatra kecitkathayatni-deva, kenāsau dṛṣṭo'rhattvaṃ kurvāṇa iti , apare kathayanti-deva arhantaḥ sarvajñānakalpā ākāśagāmina iti| tau duṣṭāmātyau kathayataḥ-deva, kimatra śokaḥ kriyate ? sa kathayati-yuvāmapyevaṃ kathayatha-kimarthaṃ śokaḥ kriyate iti, nanu yuvābhyāmevāhamarhadvadhaṃ kāritaḥ| deva, na santyarhantaḥ| kuto'rhadvadhaḥ ? sa kathayati-mayā pratyakṣadṛṣṭau tiṣyapuṣyau arhantau jvalanatapanavarṣaṇavidyotanaprātihāryāṇi kṛtvā nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau nirvātau| yuvāmevaṃ kathayatha-na santyarhantaḥ, kuto'rhadvadha iti ? tau kathayataḥ-vayaṃ devasya pratyakṣīkurmo yathā satyavacanena yuvāṃ māyayā lokaṃ vañcayitvā śraddhādeyaṃ vinipātya pratyavarāyāṃ biḍālayonāvupapannau svakasvake stūpe tiṣṭhataḥ| anena satyena satvavacanena imāṃ māṃsapeśīmādāya svakasvakaṃ stūpaṃ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya svakasvakaṃ bilaṃ praviśatāmiti| tāvevamuktau svakasvakāt stūpānnirgatau| tāvevānekaiḥ prāṇiśatasahasrairdṛṣṭau| tau māṃsapeśīmādāya svakasvakastūpaṃ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya svakasvakabilaṃ praviṣṭau| tau duṣṭāmātyau kathayataḥ-duṣṭaṃ deveneti ? sa kathayati-dṛṣṭam| deva, na santi loke'rhantaḥ| kevalaṃ tvayaṃ janapravāda iti| tasya yāsau dṛṣṭiḥ-santi loke'rhanta iti, sā prativigatā| tatra ye'śraddhāsteṣāmasaddarśanamutpannam, ye madhyasthāsteṣāṃ kāṅkṣāṃ, ye śraddhāsteṣāmadbhutaṃ saṃvṛttam| anubhāvodagrā aviśāradāḥ| śikhaṇḍī rājā saṃlakṣayati-yadi na santyeva loke'rhantaḥ, kimarthamāryakāśyapasya kātyāyanasya pañcaśataparivārasya śailāyā bhikṣuṇyāḥ pañcaśataparivārāyāḥ piṇḍakamanuprayacchāmīti ? tena bhikṣuṇāṃ bhikṣuṇīnāṃ ca piṇḍapātaḥ samucchinnaḥ| bhikṣavo bhikṣuṇyaśca raurukātprakrāntāḥ| athāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ śailā na bhikṣuṇī vinayāpekṣayā tatraivāvasthitau| yāvadapareṇa samayena rājā śikhaṇḍī raurukānnagarānnirgacchati| āyuṣmāṃśca mahākātyāyano raurukaṃ nagaraṃ piṇḍāya praviśati| sa rājānaṃ dṛṣṭvaikānte'pakramyāvasthitaḥ-mā ayamaprasādaṃ pravedayiṣyatīti| sa rājñā śokhaṇḍinā ekānte'vasthito dṛṣṭaḥ| dṛṣṭvā ca punarāmanrayate -bhavantaḥ, kimarthamayamāryo mahākātyāyano māṃ dṛṣṭvā ekānte'pakramyāvasthita iti| tasya pṛṣṭhato hirubhirukāvagrāmātyauṃ gacchataḥ| tau kathayataḥ-deva, āryo mahākātyāyanaḥ saṃlakṣayati-devaḥ kṛtakautukamaṅgalo gacchati, mā aprasādaṃ vedayiṣyati, duḥkhaṃ caradgacchati, karma kriyate, pātracīvarāṇi pāṃśunā avatariṣyatīti| rājā tūṣṇīmavasthita iti| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyano raurukaṃ nagaraṃ piṇḍāya caritvā nirgacchati, rājā ca śikhaṇḍī praviśati| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanastathaiva ekānte'pakramyāvasthitaḥ| śikhaṇḍī rājā kathayati- bhavantaḥ, pūrvamapyayamāryo mahākātyāyano māṃ dṛṣṭvā ekānte'paktramyāvasthitaḥ, sāṃpratamapi| ko'tra heturiti ? tasya pṛṣṭhatastau duṣṭāmātyau gacchataḥ| tau kathayataḥ-deva, eṣa kathayati- mā ahamasya pitṛmārakasya rajasā pravrajyāmīti| aparīkṣako'sau| śrutvā paryavasthitaḥ| sa kathayati-bhavantaḥ, yasyāhaṃ priyaḥ, so'sya muṇḍakasya śramaṇakasyoparyekaikaṃ pāṃśumuṣṭiṃ kṣipatviti| sarveṇa janakāyenaikaikā pāṃśumuṣṭiḥ kṣiptā| mahāsādhano'sau rājā| ekaikayā pāṃśumuṣṭyā āyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasyopari mahān pāṃśurāśirvyavasthitaḥ so'pi ṛddhyā parṇikāṃ kuṭimabhinirmāyāvasthitaḥ| sa gopālakaiḥ paśupālakaiścāvaṣṭabhyamāno dṛṣṭaḥ| te buddhyāyamānāḥ (?) parivāryāvasthitāḥ| hirubhirukāvagrāmātyau pṛṣṭhato'nuhiṇḍya taṃ pradeśamanuprāptau| tau pṛcchataḥ-bhavantaḥ, kimidamiti ? te kathayanti-tena kalirājena pitṛmārakeṇa āryo mahākātyāyano'duṣyanayakārī pāṃśunā avaṣṭabdha iti| tau sāśrukaṇṭhau rudanmukhau gopālakapaśupālakaiḥ sārdhaṃ pāṃśūnapanetumārabdhau| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyano nirgataḥ| tau pādayornipatya pṛcchataḥ-ārya, kimidamiti ? sa kathayati-kimanyadbhaviṣyatīti ? tau kathayataḥ- ārya, yadidaṃ śikhaṇḍinā mahākātyāyane janakāyasahāyena karma kṛtam| asya ko bhaviṣyatīti| itaḥ saptame divase raurukaṃ nagaraṃ pāṃśunā avaṣṭapsyate| ārya, kā ānupūrvī bhaviṣyatīti ? āyuṣmantau, prathame divase mahāvāyurāgatya raurukaṃ nagaramapagatapāṣāṇaśarkarakapālaṃ vyavasthāpayiṣyati| dvitīye divase puṣpavarṣaṃ patiṣyati| tṛtīye vastrvarṣam, caturthe hiraṇyavarṣam, pañcame suarṇavarṣam, paścādyai raurukasāmantanivāsibhiḥ sāmavāyikaṃ karma kṛtam, te raurukaṃ nagaraṃ prevakṣyanti| teṣu praviṣṭeṣu ṣaṣṭhe divase ratnavarṣaṃ patiṣyati, saptame divase pāṃśuvarṣamiti| tau kathayataḥ-ārya, kimāvāmasya karmaṇo bhāvinau bhāginau ? bhadramukhau, na yuvāmasya karmaṇo bhāgiṇau| ārya, yadyevaṃ kathamasmābhirasmānnagarānniṣkramitavyamiti ? sa kathayati-yuvāṃ yāvacca gṛhaṃ yāvacca nadī atrāntare suruṅgāṃ khānayitvā gṛhasamīpe nāvaṃ sthāpayitvā tiṣṭhata| yadā ratnavarṣaṃ patet, tadā ratnānāṃ nāvaṃ pūrayitvā niṣpalāyitavyamiti| tau tasya pādayornipatya raurukaṃ praviṣṭau| rājñaḥ sakāśaṃ praviṣṭau kathayataḥ-kiṃ devenāryo mahākātyāyanaḥ kiṃciduktaḥ pāṃśunāvaṣṭabdhaḥ ? sa kathayati-bhavantaḥ, jīvatyasau ? deva, jīvati| kiṃ kathayati-deva, evaṃ kathayati-itaḥ saptame divase raurukaṃ nagaraṃ pāṃśunā avaṣṭapsyata iti| kānupūrvī ? kathayati-deva, sa evaṃ kathayati, prathame tāvaddivase mahāvāyurāgatya raurukaṃ nagaramapagatapāṣāṇaśarkarakapālaṃ vyavasthāpayiṣyati, dvitīye divase puṣpavarṣaṃ patiṣyati, tṛtīye divase vastravarṣam, caturthe hiraṇyavarṣam, pañcame suvarṇavarṣam, paścādyai raurukasāmantakanivāsibhiḥ sāmavāyikaṃ karma kṛtaṃ te raurukaṃ nagaraṃ pravekṣyanti, teṣu praviṣṭeṣu ṣaṣṭhe divase ratnavarṣaṃ patiṣyati, saptame divase pāṃśuvarṣamiti| tau kathayataḥ- ārya, khānayitvā gṛhasamīpe nāvaṃ sthāpayitvā tiṣṭhata| yadā ratnavarṣaṃ patet, tadā ratnānāṃ nāvaṃ pūrayitvā niṣpalāyitavyamiti| tau duṣṭāmātyau kathayataḥ-samucchinnapiṇḍapātaḥ pāṃśuvarṣeṇāvaṣṭabdhaḥ sa kimanyadvadatu ? īdṛśaṃ vā vadate, devato vā pāpanaramiti (?)| rājā śikhaṇḍī saṃlakṣayati-syādevamiti| hirubhiru - kāvagrāmātyau mukhaṃ vibhaṇḍya hastān saṃparivartya prakrāntau| tatra hirukasya śyāmāko dārakaḥ putraḥ| bhirukasya śyāmāvatī nāma dārikā duhitā| hirukena śyāmāko dāraka āyuṣmate mahākātyāyanāya dattaḥ-ārya, yadyasya kānicitkuśalamūlāni syuḥ, pravrājayethāḥ| no cet tavaivāyamupasthāyaka iti| bhirukenāpi śyāmāvatī dārikā śailāyā bhikṣuṇyā dattā-ārye, yadyasyāḥ kānicit kuśalamūlāni syuḥ, pravrājayethāḥ| no cet kauśāmbyāṃ ghoṣilo nāma gṛhapatirmama vayasyastasya samarpayiṣyasīti| tayādhivāsitam| atha śailā bhikṣuṇī śyāmāvatīmādāya ṛddhyā raurukānnagarāt prakrāntā| tadā kauśāmbyāṃ ghoṣilasya gṛhapaterdattā| yathā ca saṃdiṣṭaṃ samākhyātam| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanastatraivāvasthitaḥ| hirubhirukābhyāmagrāmātyābhyāṃ yāvacca gṛhaṃ yāvacca nadī atrāntare suruṅgāṃ khānayitvā gṛhasamīpe ca nauḥ sthāpitāḥ| yāvadanyatamasmin divase mahāvāyurāgataḥ, yena taṃ raurukaṃ nagaramapagatapāṣāṇaśarkarakapālaṃ vyavasthāpitam| dvitīye divase puṣpavarṣaṃ patitam| tau duṣṭāmātyau kathayataḥ-deva, śrūyate rājño māndhātuḥ saptāhaṃ hiraṇyavarṣaṃ patitamiti| devasyedaṃ puṣpavarṣaṃ patitam, nacirādvasravarṣaṃ patiṣyati| tṛtīye divase vastravarṣaṃ patitam| tau duṣṭāmātyau kathayataḥ -devasyedaṃ vastravarṣaṃ patitam, nacirāddhiraṇyavarṣaṃ patiṣyatīti| caturthe divase hiraṇyavarṣaṃ patitam| tau duṣṭāmātyau kathayataḥ-devasyedaṃ hiraṇyavarṣaṃ patitam, nacirādeva suvarṇavarṣa patiṣyatīti| pañcame divase suvarṇavarṣa patitam| tau duṣṭāmātyau kathayataḥ-devasyedaṃ suvarṇavarṣaṃ patitam, nacirādeva ratnavarṣaṃ patiṣyatīti| yai raurukasāmantakanivāsibhiḥ sāmavāyikaṃ karma kṛtam, te raurukaṃ nagaraṃ praviṣṭāḥ| teṣu praviṣṭeṣu ṣaṣṭhe divase ratnavarṣaṃ patitam| hirubhirukāvagrāmātyau ratnānāṃ nāvaṃ pūrayitvā niṣpalāyitau| tatra hirukeṇānyatamasmin pradeśe hirukaṃ nāma nagaraṃ māpitam| tasya hirukaṃ hirukamiti saṃjñāṃ saṃvṛttā| bhirukeṇānyatamasmin pradeśe bhirukaṃ nāma nagaraṃ māpitam| tasyāpi bhirukacchaṃ bhirukacchamiti saṃjñā saṃvṛttā| saptame divase pāṃśuvarṣaṃ patitumārabdham| amanuṣyakairdvārāṇyavaṣṭabhāni| śyāmākaḥ kathayati-ārya, kimeṣa uccaśabdo mahāśabda iti| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ kathayati-putra,vātāyanena kāśikāṃ niṣkāsayeti| tena vātāyanena kāśikā niṣkāsitā| pāṃśubhiranavīkṛtā| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ saṃlakṣayati-sāvaśeṣāgocara iti| yāvadbhūyo niṣkāsitā, pūrṇā cūḍikābaddhā saṃvṛttā| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ saṃlakṣayati-āgocarībhūtam| idānīṃ gacchāmīti| atha yā raurukanivāsinī devatā sā yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanastenopasaṃkrāntā| upasaṃkramya pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā kathayati-ārya, ahamapyāgacchāmi| āryasyopasthānaṃ kariṣyāmīti| tenādhivāsitam| āyuṣmatā mahākātyāyanena śyāmāka uktaḥ-putra, gṛhāṇa cīvarakarṇikam| gacchāma iti| tena cīvarakarṇiko gṛhītaḥ| sa ṛdhyā uparivihāyasā śyāmākaṃ dārakamādāya saṃprasthitaḥ| raurukanivāsinyapi devatā svarddhyā tasya pṛṣṭhato'nubaddhā| raurukamapi nagaraṃ pāṃśunāvaṣṭabdham| te'nupūrveṇa kharaṃ nāma karvaṭakamanuprātāḥ| tena tatra khalābhidhāne'vasthitāḥ| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ śyāmākaṃ dārakaṃ khalābhidhāne sthāpayitvā piṇḍapātraṃ pravīṣṭaḥ| devatānubhāvāttasmin khalābhidhāne dhānyaṃ vardhitumārabdham| yastatra puruṣo'vasthitaḥ, sa taṃ dārakaṃ dṛṣṭvā tasya sakāśamupasaṃkramya kathayati-bho dāraka, tava prabhāvātkhalābhidhāne dhānyaṃ vardhata iti| sa kathayati-na mama prabhāvāt khalābhidhāne dhānyaṃ vardhata iti, api tu raurukanivāsinī devatā ihāgatā amuṣmin pradeśe tiṣṭhati, tasyāḥ prabhāvāt khalābhidhāne dhānyaṃ vardhata iti| sa tasyāḥ sakāśaṃ gatvā pādayornipatya kathayati-devate, tāḍakaṃ kuñcikāṃ ca tāvaddhāraya, yāvadgrāmaṃ (gatvā) āgacchāmi| na ca tvayā māṃ muktvā anyasya kasyaciddātavyamiti| tayā gṛhītam| tenāpi karvaṭakaṃ gatvā karvaṭakanivāsī janakāyaḥ saṃnipātitaḥ| uktaśca-bhavantaḥ, raurukanivāsinī devatā ihāgatā khalābhidhāne tiṣṭhati| tatprabhāvāt khalābhidhāne dhānyaṃ vardhate| tasyā haste mayā tāḍakaṃ kuñcikā ca dattā| (uktaṃ) ca-devate, tāḍakaṃ kuñcikāṃ ca tāvaddhāraya yāvad grāmaṃ gatvā āgacchāmi| na ca tvayā māṃ muktvā anyasya kasyaciddātavyamiti| tadadhiṣṭhānaṃ vijñāpayāmi-yadi mama puraṃ śreṣṭhinamabhiṣiñcatha, ahamātmānaṃ jīvitādvyaparopayāmīti| devatā asmādadhiṣṭhānānna kkacidgamiṣyati, yuṣmākaṃ bhoigābhivṛddhirbhaviṣyati, sarvāśca ītayo vyupaśamaṃ gamiṣyantīti| taistasya putraḥ śreṣṭhī abhiṣiktaḥ| tenātmā jīvitādvyaparopitaḥ| tataḥ sarvaṃ tadadhiṣṭhānaṃ gandhapuṣpopaśobhitaṃ chatradhvajapatākāśobhitaṃ ca balimādāya yena devatā tenopasaṃkrāntāḥ| upasaṃkramya pādayornipatya kathayati-devate, adhiṣṭhā bhava, ihaiva tiṣṭheti| nāsti mamehāvasthānam| āryasyāhaṃ mahākātyāyanasyopasthāyiketi| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyana iti kathayati-devate, samanvāhara asya yasya sakāśāt tāḍakaḥ kuñcikā ca gṛhīteti| sā samanvāhartuṃ pravṛtā paśyati, yāvatkālagataḥ| tayāsāvadhiṣṭhānanivāsī janakāyoḥbhihitaḥ-bhavantaḥ, samayato'haṃ tiṣṭhāmi| yadi yādṛśameva mama sthaṇḍilaṃ kārayatha tādṛśamevāryāsyeti| taiḥ pratijñātam| tairyādṛśameva tasyā devatāyāḥ sthaṇḍilaṃ kāritaṃ tādṛśamevāyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya| tasyā devatāyā yo'dhiṣṭhāne pradīpaḥ prajñāptaḥ, tamasau gṛhītvā āyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya sthaṇḍile sthāpayati| sā anyatamena puruṣeṇa prākārakaṇṭake sthitena pradīpaṃ gṛhītvā gacchantī dṛṣṭā| sa saṃlakṣayati-eṣā devatā āryasya mahākātyāyanasyābhisārikā gacchatīti| tayā tasya cittamupalakṣitam| sā ruṣitā-pāpacittasamudācāro'yaṃ karvaṭakanivāsī janakāyaḥ| āryasya mahākātyāyanasya nirāmagandhasyātṛptapuṇyasyāpavādamanuprayacchatīti| tasmāttasmin karvaṭake mārirutsṛṣṭā| mahājanamarako jātaḥ| mṛtajane niṣkāsyamāne mañcakāmañcake saṅktumārabdhāḥ| adhiṣṭhānanivāsinā janakāyena naumittikā āhūya pṛṣṭāḥ- kimetaditi ? te kathayanti devatāprakopa iti| te tāṃ kṣamayitumārabdhaḥ| sā kathayati-yūyamāryasya mahākātyāyanasya nirāmagandhasyāsatkāramanuprayacchatheti ? te bhūyaḥ kathayanti-kṣamasva devate, na kaścidasatkāraṃ kariṣyatīti| sā kathayati-yadi yūyaṃ yādṛśamevāryasya mahākātyāyanasyeti| te kathayanti-devate kṣamasva, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ kurma iti| tayā teṣāṃ kṣāntam| tairapyāyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya prativiśiṣṭataraḥ satkāraḥ kṛtaḥ| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanastatra varṣoṣitaḥ śyāmākaṃ dārakamādāya devatāmupāmantrya saṃprasthitaḥ| sā kathayati-ārya, mama kiṃciccihnamanuprayaccha, yatrāhaṃ kārāṃ kṛtvā tiṣṭhāmiti| tena tasyāṃ kāśikā dattā| tayātra prakṣipya stūpaḥ pratiṣṭhāpito mahaśca prasthāpitaḥ-kāśīmaha kāśīmaha iti saṃjñā saṃvṛttā| adyāpi caityavandakā bhikṣavo vandante| śyāmāko dārakaścīvarakarṇike, lagnaḥ pralambamāno gopālakapaśupālakairdṛṣṭaḥ| tairlambata lambata iti ucciarnādo muktaḥ| tasmin janapade manuṣyāṇāṃ lambakapāla iti saṃjñā saṃvṛtā| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyano'nyatamaṃ karvaṭakamanuprāptaḥ| tatra śyāmākaṃ dārakaṃ vṛkṣamūle śyāpayitvā piṇḍāya praviṣṭaḥ| tasmiṃśca karvaṭake'putro rājā kālagataḥ| paurajānapadāḥ saṃnipatya kathayanti-bhavantaḥ, kaṃ rājānamabhiṣiñcābha iti ? tatraike kathayanti-yaḥ puṇyamaheśākhya iti| apare kathayanti-kathamasau prajñāyata iti ? anye kathayanti- parīkṣakāḥ prayujyantāmiti| taiḥ parīkṣakāḥ prayuktāḥ| te itaścāmutaśca paryaṭitumārabdhāḥ| tairasau vṛkṣasyādhastānmiddhamavakrānto dṛṣṭaḥ| te tasya nimittamudgṛhītumārabdhā yāvatpaśyanti| anyeṣāṃ vṛkṣāṇāṃ chāyā prācīnapravaṇā prācīnaprāgbhārā| tasya vṛkṣasya chāyā asya śyāmākasya dārakasya kāyaṃ na vijahātīti| dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ saṃjalpitumārabdhāḥ-bhavantaḥ, ayaṃ puṇyamaheśākhyaḥ sattvaḥ, etamabhiṣiñcāma iti| sa taiḥ prabodhyektaḥ-dāraka, rājyaṃ praticcheti| sa kathayati-nāhaṃ rājyenārthī| ahamāryasya mahākātyāyanasyopasthāpaka iti| āyuṣmatā mahākātyāyanena śrutam| samanvāhartuṃ pravṛttaḥ| kimasya dārakasya rājñaḥ saṃvartanīyāni karmāṇi na veti| paśyati, santi| sa kathayati-putra, pratīccha rājyam, kiṃ tu dharmeṇa te kārayitavyamiti| tena taṃ pratīṣṭam| sa tai rājye'bhiṣiktaḥ| śyāmākena dārakeṇa tasmin rājyaṃ kāritamiti| śyāmākarājyaṃ śyāmākarājyamiti saṃjñā saṃvṛttā||



āyuṣmān mahākātyāyena vokkāṇamanuprāptaḥ| vikkāṇe āyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya mātā upapannā| sā āyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanaṃ dṛṣṭvā kathayati-dṛṣṭvā cirasya bata putrakaṃ paśyāmi, cirasya bata putrakaṃ paśyāmīti| stanābhyāṃ cāsyāḥ kṣīradhārāḥ prasṛtāḥ| āyūṣmatā mahākātyāyanena amba ambeti samāśvāsitā| tayā āyuṣmān mahākātyāyano bhojitaḥ| tasyā āyuṣmatā mahākātyāyanenāśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāryasaṃprativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvāṃ viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhittvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| sā dṛṣṭasatyā trirudānamudānayati sma-idamasmākaṃ bhadanta na mātrā kṛtaṃ na pitrā na rājñā na devatābhirneṣṭena svajanabandhuvargeṇa na pūrvapretairna śramaṇabrāhmaṇairyadbhavatā asmākaṃ kṛtam| samucchoṣitā rudhirāśrusamudrāḥ, laṅghitā asthiparvatāḥ, pihitānyapāyadvārāṇi, vivṛtāni svargamokṣadvārāṇi, pratiṣṭhāpitā smo devamanuṣyeṣu| āha ca-



yatkartavyaṃ suputreṇa māturduṣkarakāriṇā|

tatkṛtaṃ bhavatā mahyaṃ cittaṃ mokṣaparāyaṇam||67||



durgatibhyaḥ samuddhṛtya svarge mokṣe ca te aham|

sthāpitā putra yatnena sādhu te duṣkṛtaṃ kṛtam||68||



athāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanastāṃ bhadrakanyāṃ satyeṣu pratiṣṭhāpya kathayatiṃ-amba, avalokitā bhava, gacchāmīti| sā kathayati-putra, yadyevaṃ mama kiṃcidanuprayaccha, yatrāhaṃ pūjāṃ kṛtvā tiṣṭhāmīti| tena tasyā yaṣṭirdattā| tayā stūpaṃ pratiṣṭhāpya sā tasmin pratimāropitā| yaṣṭistūpa iti saṃjñā saṃvṛttā| adyāpi caityavandakā bhikṣavo vandante||



athāyuṣmān mahākātyāyano madhyadeśamāgantukāmaḥ sindhumanuprātaḥ| atha yā uttarāpathanivāsinī devatā, sā āyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanamidamavocat-ārya, mamāpi kiṃciccihnamanuprayaccha, yatrāhaṃ pūjāṃ kṛtvā tiṣṭhāmīti| sa saṃlakṣayati-uktaṃ bhagavatā madhyadeśe pule na dhārayitavye iti| tadete anuprayacchāmīti| tena tasyaite datte| tayā sthaṇḍile kārayitvā te pratiṣṭhāpite itaścarasantisaṃjñā saṃvṛttā| āyuṣmān mahākātyāyano'nupūrveṇa śrāvastīmanuprāptaḥ| bhikṣubhirdṛṣṭa uktaśca-svāgataṃ svāgatamāyuṣman| kaccitkuśalacaryeti ? sa kathayati-āyuṣmantaḥ, kiṃcit sukhacaryā kiṃcidduḥkhacaryeti| bhikṣavaḥ kathayanti-kiṃ sukhacaryā kiṃ duḥkhacaryeti ? sa kathayati- yatsattvakāryaṃ kṛtam, iyaṃ sukhacaryā| yad rājā śikhaṇḍī raurukanivāsī ca janakāya ahaṃ ca pāṃśunāvaṣṭabdhaḥ, hirubhirukau cāgrāmātyau pṛcchreṇa palāyitau, iyaṃ duḥkhacaryeti| atha pāthābhikṣavo'vadhyāyantaḥ kathayanti-pitṛmārako'sau| tenāyuṣmān rudrāyaṇo'rhattvaṃ prāptaḥ| aduṣyanayakārī praghātita iti| idaṃ tasya puṣpamātram| anyatphalaṃ bhaviṣyatīti||



bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ-kiṃ bhadanta āyuṣmatā rudrāyaṇena karma kṛtaṃ yenāḍhye mahādhane mahābhoge kule pratyājātaḥ? bhagavataḥ śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśapraśāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam ? arhattvaprāptaśca śastreṇa praghātita iti ? bhagavānāha-rudrāyaṇena bhikṣuṇā karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayānyoghavatpratyupasthitānyavaśyaṃbhāvīni| rudrāyaṇena karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni| ko'nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati ? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣveva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni vipacyante śubhānyaśubhāni ca|



na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatairapi|

sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām||69|| iti|



bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo'tīte'dhvani asati buddhānāṃ bhagavatāmutpāde pratyekabuddhā loka utpadyante hīnadīnānukampakāḥ prāntaśayanāsanabhaktāḥ khaṅgaviṣāṇakalpā ekadakṣiṇīyā lokasya| yāvadanyatamasmin karvaṭake lubdhaḥ prativasati| tasya karvaṭakasya ca nātidūre udapānaṃ prabhūtānāṃ mṛgāṇāmāvāsaḥ| tatrāsau lubdhakaḥ pratidinaṃ prabhūtān kūṭān pāśālepāṃśca pratikṣipati prabhūtānāṃ mṛgānāmutsādāya vināśāya anayena vyasanāya| tasya cāmoghāste kūṭāḥ pāśālepāśca| yāvadanyataraḥ pratyekabuddho janapadacārikāṃ caraṃstaṃ karvaṭakamanuprāpto devatāyatane rātriṃdivā samupāgataḥ| sa pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya taṃ karvaṭakamanuprāptaḥ| taṃ karvaṭakaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat| tataḥ piṇḍapātamaṭitvā saṃlakṣayati-idaṃ devāyatanaṃ divā ākīrṇam| bahiḥ karvaṭakasya śānte sthāne piṇḍapātaṃ velāṃ karomīti| sa karvaṭakānniṣkramyedaṃ śāntamidaṃ śāntamiti yena tadudapānaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramya pātrasrāvaṇamekānta upanikṣipya pādau prakṣālya hastau nirmādya pānīyaṃ parisrāvya śīrṇaparṇakāni samudānīya niṣadya bhaktakṛtyaṃ kṛtvā hastau nirmādya mukhaṃ pātraṃ ca pātraparisrāvaṇaṃ yathāsthāne sthāpya pādau prakṣālya anyatamavṛkṣamūlaṃ niśritya suptoragarājabhogaparipiṇḍīkṛtaṃ paryaṅkaṃ baddhvā śānteneryāpathena niṣaṇṇaḥ| tasmin divase mānuṣagandhenaikamṛgo'pi na grahaṇānugataḥ| atha sa lubdhakaḥkālyamevotthāya yena tadudapānaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| sa tān kūṭān pāśāṃśca pratyavekṣitumārabdhaḥ| ekamṛgamapi nādrākṣīt| tasyaitadabhavat-mamāmī kūṭāḥ pāśālepāścāvandhyāḥ| kimatra kāraṇaṃ yenādya ekamṛgo'pi na baddha iti ?| tadudapānaṃ sāmantakena paryaṭitumārabdhaḥ| paśyati manuṣyapadam| sa tena padānusāreṇa gataḥ| paśyati taṃ pratyekabuddhaṃ śānteneryāpathena niṣaṇṇam| sa saṃlakṣayati-ete pravrajitāḥ śāntātmāna īdṛśeṣu sthāneṣvabhiramante| yadyadyāhamasya jīvitāpacchedaṃ na karomi, niyatameṣa mama vṛttisamucchedaṃ karoti| sarvathā praghātyo'yamiti| tenāsau nirghṛṇahṛdayena tyaktaparalokena karākārasadṛśaṃ dhanurākarṇaṃ pūrayitvā saviṣeṇa śareṇa marmaṇi tāḍitaḥ| sa mahātmā pratyekabuddhaḥ saṃlakṣayati-mā ayaṃ tapasvī lubdho'tyantakṣataśca bhaviṣyati, upahataśca| hastoddhāramasya dadāmīti| sa vitatapakṣa iva haṃsarāja uparivihāyasamabhyudgamya jvalanatapanavarṣaṇavidyotanaprātihāryāṇi kartumārabdhaḥ| āśu pṛthagjanasya ṛddhirāvarjanakarī| sa mūlanikṛtta iva drumaḥ pādayornipatya kathayati-avatarāvatara sadbhūtadakṣiṇīya, mama kleśapaṅkanimagmasya hastoddhāramanuprayaccheti| sa tasyānukampārthamavatīrṇa| tatastena viśalyīkṛtaḥ| upanāho dattaḥ| uktaśca-ārya, niveśanaṃ gacchāmaḥ| yadyatra suvarṇapalo'pi dātavyaḥ, ahaṃ pariprāpayāmīti| sa saṃlakṣayati -yanmayā anena pūtikāyena prāptavyaṃ tadidānīṃ śāntaṃ nirupadhiśeṣaṃ nirvāṇadhātuṃ praviśāmīti| sa tasyaiva purastātpunargaganatalamabhyudgamya vicitrāṇi prātihāryāṇi vidarśya nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau parinirvṛtaḥ| dhanavānasau lubdhaḥ| tena sarvagandhakāṣṭhaiścitāṃ citvā dhmāpitaḥ| sā citā kṣīreṇa nirvāpitā| tānyasthīni nave kumbhe prakṣipya śārīrastūpaḥ pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ| chatradhvajapatākāścāropitāḥ| gandhairmālyairdhūpaiśca pūjāṃ kṛtvā pādayornipatya praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam-yanmayaivaṃvidhe sadbhūtadakṣiṇiye'pakārokṛtaḥ, mā ahamasya karmaṇo bhāgī syām| yattu kārā kṛtā, anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlenāḍhye mahādhane mahābhoge kule jāyeyam, evaṃvidhānāṃ ca guṇānāṃ lābhī syām, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāramārāgayeyaṃ na virāgayeyamiti||



kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo'sau tena kālena tena samayena lubdhakaḥ, eṣa evāsau rudrāyaṇo bhikṣuḥ| yadanena pratyekabuddhaḥ saviṣeṇa śareṇa marmaṇi tāḍitaḥ, tasya karmaṇo vipākena bahūni varṣaśatāni bahūni varṣasahasrāṇi narakeṣu paktaḥ, tasminnapi codapāne saviṣeṇa śareṇa marmaṇi tāḍītaḥ, tenaiva ca karmāvaśeṣeṇaitarhyapyarhattvaprātaḥ śastreṇa praghātitaḥ||



punarapi bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ- kiṃ bhadanta śikhaṇḍinā raurukanivāsinā janakāyenāyuṣmatā mahākātyāyanena ca karma kṛtaṃ yena pāṃśunāvaṣṭabdhāḥ, hirubhirukau tvagrāmātyau niṣpalāyitāviti ? bhagavānāha-ebhireva bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayānyoghavatpratyupasthitānyavaśyaṃbhāvīni| ebhiḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni| ko'nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati ? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣveva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāvyaśubhāni ca|



na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatairapi|

sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām||70||



bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo'nyātarasmin karvaṭake gṛhapatiḥ prativasati| tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatramānītam| sa tayā saha krīḍate ramate paricārayati| tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ putro jātaḥ| punarasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayato dārikā jātā| yāvadanyatamaḥ pratyekabuddho janapadacārikāṃ caraṃstaṃ karvaṭakamanuprāptaḥ| yā janmikā dārikāḥ, tāsāṃ yācanakā āgacchanti| tasyā na kaścidāgacchati| asati buddhānāmutpāde pratyekabuddhā loka utpadyante hīnadīnānukampakāḥ prāntaśayanāsanabhaktā ekadakṣiṇīyā lokasya| yāvadanyatamaḥ pratyekabuddho janapadacārikāṃ caraṃstaṃ karvaṭakamanuprāptaḥ| yāvattayā dārikayā gṛhaṃ saṃmṛjya vāṭasyopariṣṭāt saṃkāraśchoritaḥ| tasya pratyekabuddhasya piṇḍapātamaṭataḥ śirasi patitaḥ| tayāsau dārikayā patan dṛṣṭaḥ| na cāsya vipratisāracittamutpannam| naivam| tasyāstameva divasaṃ yācanaka āgataḥ| sā bhrātrā pṛṣṭā-kiṃ tvayādya kṛtaṃ yena te yācanakā nāgatā iti| tayā samākhyātam -mayā tasyoparo saṃskāraśchoritaḥ| tena vipuṣpitam| tadā dārikayā anyasyā dārikāyā niveditam| tayāpyasyā lokasyedaṃ pāpakaṃ dṛṣṭigatamutpannam| yasyā yācanakā āgacchanti, sā sā tasya pratyekabuddhasyopari saṃkāraṃ chorayatviti| asatkārabhīravaste mahātmānaḥ sarve pratyekabuddhāḥ| sa tasmāt karvaṭakātprakrāntaḥ| pañcābhijñānāmṛṣīṇāmupari kṣeptumārabdhāḥ| te'pi prakrāntāḥ| tato mātāpitrorupari kṣeptumārabdhāḥ| tasmin karvaṭake dvau gṛhapatī samakau prativasataḥ| sā ābhyāmuktā-bhavantaḥ, asaddharmo'yaṃ vardhate, viramateti| tābhyāṃ nivāritāḥ prativiratāḥ||



kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yāsau dārikā yayā pratyekabuddhasyopari saṃkāraśchoritaḥ, eṣa evāsau śikhaṇḍī| yo'sau karvaṭakanivāsī janakāyaḥ, eṣa evāsau raurukanivāsī janakāyaḥ| yadebhiḥ pratyekabuddhānāmupari pāpakaṃ dṛṣṭigatamutpannaṃ kṛtam, asya karmaṇo vipākena pāṃśunāvaṣṭadhāḥ| yo'sau gṛhapatī yābhyāṃ nivāritam, etāvetau hirubhirukāvagrāmātyau| tasya karmaṇo vipākena niṣpalāyitau| yo'sau dārikāyā bhrātā yena vipuṣpitam, eṣa evāsau kātyāyano bhikṣuḥ| yadanena vipuṣpitaṃ tasya karmaṇo vipākena pāṃśunāvaṣṭabdhaḥ| yadi tena na vipuṣpitaṃ (cittaṃ) na pāṃśunāvaṣṭabdho'bhaviṣyaditi| yadi tasya pāpakaṃ dṛṣṭigatamutpannamabhaviṣyat, kātyāyano'pi bhikṣuḥ pāṃśunāvaṣṭabdho'nayena vyasanamāpanno'bhaviṣyaditi| iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇāmekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśulkānāmekāntaśulkaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ| tasmāttarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇyapāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣveva karmasvābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ| ityevaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyamiti| bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitamabhyanandanniti||
