buddho bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme| śrāvastyāmanyatamo brāhmaṇaḥ prativasati| tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatramānītam| satayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati| tasyāpatyaṃ jātaṃ jātaṃ kālaṃ karoti| athāpareṇa samayena tasya patnī āpannasattvā saṃvṛttā| sa kare kapolaṃ datvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ| tasya nātidūre vṛddhayuvatiḥ prativasati| tayā dṛṣṭaḥ| sā kathayati-kasmāttvaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ kare kapolaṃ datvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ ? sa kathayati- mamāpatyaṃ jātaṃ jātaṃ kālaṃ karoti| mama cedānīṃ patnī āpannasattvā saṃvṛttā| yadapyanyadapatyaṃ janayiṣyati, tadapi kālaṃ kariṣyati| sā kathayati - yadā tava patnyāḥ prasavakālaḥ syāt, tadā māṃ śabdāpayethā iti| athāpareṇa samayena tasya patnyāḥ prasavakālo jātaḥ| tena sā vṛddhayuvatiḥ śadbāpitā| tatyā sā prasavāpitā| putro jātaḥ| tayā sa dārakaḥ snāpayitvā śuklena vasreṇa veṣṭayitvā| navīnītenāsyaṃ pūrayitvā dārikāyāṃ haste'nupradattaḥ| sā dārikoktā-imaṃ dārakaṃ caturmahāpathe dhāraya| yaṃ kaṃcit paśyasi brāhmaṇaṃ vā śramaṇaṃ vā, sa vaktavyaḥ-ayaṃ dārakaḥ pādābhivandanaṃ karotīti| astaṃ gate āditye yadi jīvati, gṛhītvā āgaccha| atha kālaṃ karoti, tatraivāropayitavyaḥ| sā tamādāya caturmahāpathe gatvā sthitā| ācaritaṃ tīrthyānāṃ kalyamevotthāya tīrthopasparśanāya gacchanti| sā dārikā sagauravā sapratīśā pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā kathayati- ayaṃ dāraka āryāṇāṃ pādābhivandanaṃ karoti| te kathayanti-ciraṃ jīva, dirghamāyuḥ pālayatu, mātāpitrormānorathaṃ pūrayatu| sthavirasthavirā bhikṣavaḥ pūrvāhnakālasamaye nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya śrāvastyāṃ piṇḍāya praviśanti| sā dārikā sagauravā sapratīśā pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā kathayati- ayaṃ dāraka āryāṇāṃ pādābhivandanaṃ karotīti| sthavirāḥ kathayanti-suciraṃ jīvatu, dīrghamāyuḥ pālayatu, mātāpitrormanorathaṃ pūrayatu| bhagavān pūrvāhne nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya śrāvastīṃ piṇḍāya praviśati sma| sā dārikā sagauravā sapratīśā pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā kathayati-bhagavan, bhagavan, ayaṃ dārako bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ karotīti| bhagavānāha-ciraṃ jīvatu, dīrghamāyuḥ pālayatu, mātāpitrormānorathaṃ pūrayatu| vikālībhūte paśyati- yāvajjīvati| sā taṃ gṛhītvā gṛhamāgatā| sā taiḥ pṛṣṭā- jīvati dārakaḥ ? sā kathayati- jīvati| te kathayanti-kutra dhāritaḥ ? asmin mahāpathe| te kathayanti-kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāma ? ayaṃ dārako mahāpathe dhāritaḥ| bhavatu dārakasya mahāpanthaka iti nāma| mahāpanthako dāraka unnīto vardhito mahān saṃvṛttaḥ| sa yadā mahān saṃvṛttastadā lipyāmupanyastaḥ, saṃkhyāyāṃ gaṇanāyāṃ mudrāyāṃ brāhmaṇikāyāmīryāyāṃ śauce samudācāre bhasmagrahe autkare bhoskāre ṛgvede yajurvede sāmavede'tharvavede yajane yājane'dhyayane'dhyāpane dāne pratigrahe| ṣaṭkarmanirato brāhmaṇo saṃvṛttaḥ| sa pañcaśatagaṇaṃ brāhmaṇakarma om vācayitumārabdhaḥ| tasya bhūyaḥ krīḍato ramataḥ paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasattvā saṃvṛttāḥ| tasyāḥ prasavakālo jātaḥ| tena sā vṛddhayuvatiḥ śabdāpitā| tatyā prasavitā| tasyāḥ putro jātaḥ| tayā sa dārakaḥ snāpayitvā śuklena vastreṇa veṣṭayitvā navanītenāsyaṃ pūrayitvā dārikāyā haste dattaḥ| sā dārikoktā-imaṃ tvaṃ dārakaṃ caturmahāpathe dhāraya| yadi kaṃcitpaśyasi śramaṇaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ vā, sa vaktavyaḥ-ayaṃ dāraka āryasya pādābhivandanaṃ karoti| astaṃ gata āditye yadi jīvati, gṛhītvā āgaccha| atha kālaṃ karoti, tatraivāropayitvā āgaccha| sā dārikā alasajatīyā taṃ dārakamādāya panthalikayāṃ sthitā| ācaritaṃ tīrthyānāṃ kalyamevottthāya tīrthopasparśakā gacchanti| sā dārikā sagauravā sapratīśā pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā kathayati- āryaṃ, ayaṃ dāraka āryāṇāṃ pādābhivandanaṃ karoti| te kathayanti- ciraṃ jīvatu, dīrghamāyuḥ pālayatu, mātāpitrormanorathaṃ pūrayatu| sā taṃ vikālībhūte paśyati- yāvajjīvati| sā taṃ gṛhītvā gṛhamāgatā| sā taiḥ pṛṣṭā - jīvati dārakaḥ ? sā kathayati- jīvatīti| te kathayanti - kutra tvayaiṣa dhāritaḥ ? sā kathayati- amuṣyāṃ panthalikāyām| te kathayanti-kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāma ? ayaṃ dārakaḥ panthalikāyāṃ dhāritaḥ| bhavatu dārakasya nāmadheyaṃ panthaka iti| panthako dāraka unnīto vardhito mahān saṃvṛttaḥ| sa yadā mahān saṃvṛttastadā lipyāmupanyastaḥ| tasya sītyukte dhamiti vismarati| atha tasyācāryaḥ kathayati-bāhmaṇa, mayā prabhūtadārakāḥ pāṭhayitavyāḥ| na śakṣāmyahaṃ panthakaṃ pāṭhayitum| mahāpanthakasyālpamucyate prabhūtaṃ gṛhṇāti, asya tu panthakasya sītyukte dhamiti| vismarati| brāhmaṇaḥ saṃlakṣayati-sarve brāhmaṇā lipyakṣarakuśalā bhavanti, vedabrāhmaṇa eṣa bhaviṣyati| sa tenādhyāpakasya vedaṃ pāṭhayituṃ samarpitaḥ| tasya omityukte bhūriti vismarati, bhūrityukta omiti vismarati| adhyāpakaḥ kathayati-prabhūtāmāṇavakāḥ pāṭhayitavyā mayā| na śakyāmyahaṃ panthakaṃ pāṭhayitum| asya omityukte bhūriti vismarati, bhūrityukta omiti vismarati| brāhmaṇaḥ saṃlakṣayati-na sarve brāhmaṇā vedapāragā bhavanti| jātibrāhmaṇa evāyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti| sa yatra kkacinnimantritako gacchati, tameva panthakamādāya gacchati| atha tena samayena sa brāhmaṇo glānībhūtaḥ| sa mūlagaṇḍapatraphalabhaiṣajyairupasthīyamāno hīyata eva| sa tena mahāpanthaka uktaḥ-putra, tvaṃ mamātyayādaśocyo'si| api tu tvayā panthakasya yogodvahanaṃ kartavyamiti| ityuktvā-
sarve kṣayāntā nicayāḥ patanāntāḥ samucchrayāḥ|
saṃyogā viprayogāntā maraṇāntaṃ ca jīvitam||1||
iti sa kāladharmeṇa saṃyuktaḥ| te taṃ nīlapītalohitāvadātairvastraiḥ śibikāmalaṃkṛtya mahatā satkāreṇa śmaśāne dhmāpayitvā śokavinodaṃ kṛtvā avasthitāḥ||
āyuṣmantau śāriputramaudgalyāyanau pañcaśataparivārau kosaleṣu jānapadeṣu cārikāṃ carantau śrāvastīmanuprāptau| śrāvastyāṃ janakāyena śrutam- āyuṣmantau śāriputramaudgalyāyanau pañcaśataparivārau kosaleṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ carantau śrāvastīmanuprāptau| śrutvā ca punaḥ sa janakāyo bahirnirgantumārabdhaḥ| mahāpanthako'pi bahiḥ śrāvastyāmanyatamasmin vṛkṣamūle pañcamātrāṇi māṇavakaśatāni brāhmaṇakān mantrān vācayati| tena sa janakāyaḥ śrāvastyā nirgacchan dṛṣṭaḥ| sa tān māṇavakān pṛcchati-bhavantaḥ, ka eṣa mahājanakāyo nirgacchati ? te tasya kathayanti- upādhyāya, bhadantau śāriputramaudgalyāyanau pañcaśataparivārau kosaleṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ caritvā iha śrāvastīmanuprāptau, taddarśanāyopasaṃkrāntaḥ| kiṃ nu tau draṣṭavyau ? yatredānīṃ tadagraṃ varṇamapahāya dvitīyavarṇasya śramaṇasya gautamasyāntike pravrajitau| ekastatra māṇavakaḥ śrāddhaḥ| sa kathayati-upādhyāya, maivaṃ vocaḥ| mahānubhāvau tau| yadyupādhyāyasteṣāṃ dharmaṃ śṛṇuyāt, syānametadvidyate yadupādhyāyasyāpi rocate| ācaritaṃ teṣāṃ māṇavakānāṃ yadā apāṭhā bhavanti, te kadācinnagarāvalokanayā gacchanti| kadācittīrthopasparśakā gacchanti| kadācitsamidhāhārakā gacchanti| apareṇa samayena te sarve apāṭhāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ| te samidhāhārakāḥ saṃprasthitāḥ| so'pi mahāpanthako'nyatamavṛkṣamūle caṃkramya sthitaḥ| tatraikaṃ bhikṣumadrākṣīt| sa tamupasaṃkramyaivamāha-bho bhikṣo, ucyatāṃ tāvatkiṃcidbuddhavacanam| tena tasya daśa kuśalāḥ karmapathā vistareṇa saṃprakāśitāḥ| so'bhiprasannaḥ kathayati-bho bhikṣo, punarapyākhyāhi vistaram| ityuktvā prakrāntaḥ| apareṇa samayena bhūyaste apāṭhāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ| te samidhāhārakāḥ saṃprasthitāḥ| mahāpanthako'pi bhikṣusakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ| tena tasya dvādaśāṅgaḥ pratītyasamutpādo'nulomapratilomo vistareṇa prakāśitaḥ| so'bhiprasannaḥ kathayati- bho bhikṣo, labheyāhaṃ svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyāmupasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam| careyamahaṃ śramaṇasya gautamasyāntike brahmacaryam| sa bhikṣuḥ saṃlakṣayati-pravrājayāmi śāsane, dhuramunnāmayatīti| sa tenoktaḥ-brāhmaṇa, evaṃ kuruṣva| mahāpanthakaḥ kathayati-bhikṣo, vayaṃ prajñātā brāhmaṇāḥ| na śakṣyāma ihaiva pravrajitum| janapadaṃ gatvā pravrajāmaḥ| sa tena janapadaṃ nītvā pravrajitaḥ upasaṃpāditaḥ, uktaśca| dve bhikṣukarmaṇī dhyānamadhyayanaṃ ca| kiṃ kariṣyasi ? ubhayaṃ kariṣyāmi| tena divā uddiśatā yoniśo bhāvayatā trīṇi piṭakāni, rātrau cintayatā tulayatā upaparīkṣamāṇena sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| arhan saṃvṛttastraidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāpratisaṃvitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasatkāraparāṅmukhaḥ| sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ mānyaḥ pūjyo'bhivādyaśca saṃvṛttaḥ||
yadā panthakasya bhogāstanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gatāḥ, sa kṛcchreṇa jīvikāṃ kalpayitumārabdhaḥ| atha panthakasyaitadabhavat-yattāvanme śrutena prāptavyaṃ tanmayā ... | yannvahaṃ śrāvastīṃ gatvā bhagavantaṃ paryupāsyāmi| athāyuṣmān mahāpanthakaḥ pañcaśataparivāro yena śāvastī tena cārikāṃ prakrāntaḥ| anupūrveṇa cārikāṃ caran śrāvastīmanuprāptaḥ| śrāvastyāṃ janakāyena śrutam-āryo mahāpanthakaḥ pañcaśataparivāraḥ kosaleṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ caran śrāvastīmanuprāptaḥ| śrutvā ca punarnirgantumārabdhaḥ| panthakena dṛṣṭaḥ| sa pṛcchanti- bhavantaḥ, kutraiṣa mahājanakāyo gacchanti ? te kathayanti-āryo mahāpanthakaḥ pañcaśataparivāraḥ kosaleṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ caran śrāvastīmanuprāptaḥ| tameṣa mahājanakāyo darśanāyopasaṃkrāmati| panthakaḥ saṃlakṣayati-eṣāmasau na bhrātā na jñātiḥ| mamāsau bhrātā bhavati| ahaṃ kasmāttaṃ na darśanāyopasaṃkramāmi ? so'pi taddarśanāyopasaṃkrāntaḥ| sa tena dṛṣṭaḥ pṛṣṭaśca-panthaka, kathaṃ yāpayasi ? kṛcchreṇa yāpayāmi ? kiṃ na pravrajasi ? sa kathayati-ahaṃ cūḍaḥ paramacūḍo dhanvaḥ paramadhanvaḥ| ko māṃ pravrājayiṣyatīti ? āyuṣmān mahāpanthakaḥ saṃlakṣayati-santyasya kānicitkuśalamūlāni ? santi| kenāyaṃ na yogyaṃ ? āgaccha, ahaṃ tvāṃ pravrājayiṣyāmi| tena pravrājita upasaṃpāditaḥ| tena tasyoddeśo dattaḥ-
pāpaṃ ca kuryānmanasā na vācā
kāyena vā kiṃcana sarvaloke|
riktaḥ kāmaiḥ smṛtimān saṃprajānan
duḥkhaṃ na sa vidyādanarthopasaṃhitam||1||
tasyaiṣā gāthā traimāsyenāpi na vṛttā jātā| anyeṣāṃ gopālakānāṃ paśupālakānāṃ śrutvā pravṛttā jātā| sagauravaḥ sapratīśa upasaṃkramya praṣṭuṃ pravṛttaḥ| te upasaṃharanti| dharmatā khalu yathā buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ dvau śrāvakāṇāṃ saṃnipātau bhavataḥ, āṣāḍhyāṃ varṣopanāyikāyāṃ kārtikapūrṇamāsyām| evaṃ madāśrāvakāṇāmapi| tatra ye āṣāḍhīvarṣopanāyikāyāmupasaṃkrāmanti, te tāṃstān manasikāraviśeṣānādāya tāsu tāsu grāmanigamarāṣṭrārājadhānīṣu varṣā upagacchanti| ye kārtikyāṃ ca pūrṇamāsyāmupasaṃkrāmanti, te svādhyāyanikāṃ paripṛcchanikāṃ ca yācanti,yathādhigataṃ cārocayanti| āyuṣmato mahāpanthakasya sārdhavihāryantevāsikā bhikṣavo janapade varṣoṣitāḥ, te'pyeva kārtikyāṃ pūrṇamāsyāṃ yenāyuṣmān mahāpanthakastenopasaṃkrāntāḥ| tatra kecitsvādhyāyinikāṃ yācanti, kecitparipṛcchanti, kecidyathādhigatamārocayanti| tatra ye cūḍā bhavanti paramacūḍā dhanvāḥ paramadhanvāḥ, te ṣaḍvargīyān sevante bhajante paryupāsante| āyuṣmān panthakaḥ ṣaḍvargīyān sevate bhajate paryupāsate| sa ṣaḍvargīyairucyate-āyuṣman pathaka, tava samānopādhyāyā upādhyāyasyāntikātsvādhyāyinikāṃ paripṛcchinikāṃ yācanti| gaccha, tvamapi tvadupādhyāyasyāntikātsvādhyāyinikāṃ paripṛcchinikā yācasva| sa kathayati-mayā na kiṃcitpaṭhitaṃ traimāsye, na tvekā gāthā mama vṛttā jātā, kimahaṃ svādhyāyinikāṃ yāceyāmiti ? te kathayanti- nanūktaṃ bhagavatā-asvādhyāyamānā mattā iti| kiṃ tavāsvādhyāyamānasya gāthā anupravṛttā bhaviṣyati ? gaccha, yācāhi| sa gatvā kathayati-upādhyāya, svādhyāyinikāṃ tāvanme dehi| āyuṣmān mahāpanthakaḥ saṃlakṣayati-kimasyedaṃ svaṃ pratibhānamāhosvit kenacitprayuktaḥ ? sa paśyati- yāvatprayuktaḥ| āyuṣmān māhāpanthakaḥ saṃlakṣayati-kiṃ nvayamutsahanāvineya āhosvidavasādanāvineyaḥ ? sa paśyati-yāvadavasādanāvineyaḥ| sa tena grīvāyāṃ gṛhītvā bahirvihārasya niṣkāsitaḥ| tvaṃ tāvaccūḍaḥ paramacūḍo dhanvaḥ paramadhanvaḥ| kiṃ tvamasmin śāsane kariṣyasi ? sa roditumārabdhaḥ| idānīmahaṃ na gṛhī na pravrajitaḥ| adrākṣīdbhagavānāyuṣmantaṃ panthakaṃ bahirvihārasya bhramantam| dṛṣṭvā ca punarāgacchantamidamavocat-kasmāttvaṃ panthaka vahirvihārasya rodiṣyasi, aśrūṇi vartayasi ? ahamasmi bhadanta upādhyāyena niṣkāsitaḥ| idānīmahaṃ na gṛhī na pravrajitaḥ| bhagavānāha-nedaṃ vatsa maunīndraṃ vacanaṃ tavopādhyāyena tribhiḥ kalpāsaṃkhyeyairanaikairduṣkaraśatasahasraiḥ ṣaṭ pāramitāḥ paripūrya samudānītam, api tu mayedaṃ maunīndraṃ pravacanaṃ tribhiḥ kalpāsaṃkhyeyairanaikairduṣkaraśatasahasraiḥ ṣaṭ pāramitāḥ paripūrya samudānītam| na śakyasi tvaṃ tathāgatasyāntikātpaṭhitum ? ahamasmi bhadanta cūḍaḥ paramacūḍo dhanvaḥ paramadhanvaḥ| atha bhagavānasyāmutpattau gāthāṃ bhāṣate-
yo bālo bālabhāvena paṇḍitastatra tena saḥ|
bālaḥ paṇḍitamānī tu sa vai bāla ihocyate||2||
asthānamanavakāśo yadbuddhā bhagavantaḥ padaśo dharmaṃ vācayiṣyanti nedaṃ sthānaṃ vidyate| tatra bhagavānāyuṣmantamānandamāmantrayate sma-imaṃ pāṭhaya tvamānanda panthakam| āyuṣmānānandastaṃ pāṭhayitumārabdhaḥ| sa na śaknoti pāṭhayitum| āyuṣmānānando bhagavantamidamavocat- mayā tāvadbhadanta śāsturupasthānaṃ karaṇīyam, śrutamudgrahītavyam, gaṇo vācayitavyaḥ| āgatāgatānāṃ brāhmaṇagṛhapatīnāṃ dharmo deśayitavyaḥ| nāhaṃ śakṣyāmi panthakaṃ pāthayitum| bhagavatā tasya dve pade datte-rajo harāmi, malaṃ harāmīti| tasyaitatpadadvayaṃ na lebhe| bhagavān saṃlakṣayati| karmāpanayo'sya kartavyamiti| tatra bhagavānāyuṣmantamānandamāmantrayate-śakṣyasi tvaṃ panthaka bhikṣūṇāmupānahānmūlācca proñchitum| paraṃ bhadanta śakṣyāmi| gaccha proñchasva| sa bhikṣūṇāmupānahānmūlācca proñchitumārabdhaḥ| tasya te bhikṣavo nānuprayacchanti| bhagavānāha-anuprayacchata, karmāpanayo'sya kartavya iti| padadvayasya dāsye svādhyāyanikām, anuprayacchata| sa bhikṣūṇāmupānahānmūlaṃ kramataśca proñchate| tasya te bhikṣavaḥ padadvayasya svādhyāyanikāmanuprayacchanti| tasyaitatpadadvayaṃ svādhyāyataḥ kālāntareṇa pravṛttaṃ jātam| athāyuṣmataḥ panthakasya rātryāḥ pratyūṣasamaye etadabhavat-bhagavānevamāha-rajo harāmi, malaṃ harāmīti| kiṃ nu bhagavānādhyātmikaṃ rajaḥ saṃdhāyāha āhosvidbāhyam ? tasyaivaṃ cintayatastasyāṃ velāyāmaśrutapūrvāstisro gāthā āmukhīpravṛttā jātāḥ -
rajo'tra rāgo na hi reṇureṣa
rajo rāgasyādhivacanaṃ na reṇoḥ|
etadrajaḥ prativinudanti paṇḍitā
na ye pramattāḥ sugatasya śāsane||3||
rajo'tra dveṣo na hi reṇureṣa
rajo deṣasyādhivacanaṃ na reṇoḥ|
etadrajaḥ prativinudanti paṇḍitā
na ye pramattāḥ sugatasya śāsane||4||
rajo'tra moho na ho reṇureṣa
rajo mohasyādhivacanaṃ na reṇoḥ|
etadrajaḥ prativinudanti paṇḍitā
na ye pramattāḥ sugatasya śāsane||5||
tenodyacchamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāpratisaṃvitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasatkāraparāṅmukhaḥ| sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ mānyaśca pūjyaścābhivādyaśca saṃvṛttaḥ| dhyāne niṣaṇṇa āyuṣmatā mahāpanthakena dṛṣṭaḥ| asamanvāhṛtyārhatāṃ jñānadarśanaṃ na pravartate| sa tena bāhau gṛhītvoktaḥ-āgaccha svādhyāyinikāṃ tāvatkuru, tataḥ paścāddhyāyiṣyasīti| athāyuṣmatā panthakena sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam, gajabhujasadṛśo bāhurutsṛṣṭaḥ| āyuṣmatā mahāpanthakena pṛṣṭhato mukhaṃ vyavalokayatā dṛṣṭaḥ| sa kathayati-āyuṣman panthaka, evaṃ te tvayā guṇagaṇā adhigatāḥ? adhigatāḥ||
yadā āyuṣmatā panthakena sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam, anyatīrthikā avadhyāyanti dhriyanti vivācayanti| śramaṇo gautama evamāha- gambhīro me dharmo gambhīrāvabhāso durdṛśo duranubodho'tarko'tarkāvacaraḥ, sūkṣmo nipuṇapaṇḍitavijñavedanīyaḥ| atredānīṃ kiṃ gambhīro'sya, yasyedānīṃ panthakaprabhṛtayaścūḍāḥ paramacūḍā dhanvāḥ paramadhanvāḥ pravrajanti| bhagavān saṃlakṣayati-sumeruprakhye mahāśrāvake mahājanakāyaḥ kṣānti gṛhṇāti| guṇodbhāvanā asya kartavyā| tatra bhagavānāyuṣmantamānandamāmantrayate-gaccha ānanda, panthakasya kathaya-bhikṣuṇyaste avavaditavyā iti| evaṃ bhadantetyāyuṣmānānando bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya yenāyuṣmān panthakastenopasaṃkrāṇtaḥ| upasaṃkramyāyuṣmantaṃ panthakamidamavocat-śāstā tvāmāyuṣman panthaka evamāha-bhikṣuṇyaste avavaditavyā iti| āyuṣmān panthakaḥ kathayati- kimarthaṃ sthavirasthavirān bhikṣūnapahāya māṃ bhagavān bhikṣuṇyavavādakamājñāpayati ? mamaiva guṇodbhāvanā kartavyeti śāsturmanorathaṃ paripūrayiṣyāmīti| bhikṣuṇyaśchandahānisaḥ (?) jetavanamāgatāḥ| tā bhikṣūn pṛcchanti-bhagavatā ko'smākamavavādaka ājñaptaḥ ? te kathayanti-āyuṣmān panthakaḥ| tāḥ kathayanti-bhaginyaḥ paśyata kathaṃ mātṛgrāmaḥ paribhūtaḥ| yena tribhirmāsairekā gāthā paṭhitā, sāpi na pravṛttā| bhikṣuṇyastripiṭā dhārmakathikā yuktamuktapratibhānāḥ| sa kila bhikṣuṇīravavadiṣyatīti| tāḥ parṣadamāgatā bhikṣūṇībhiḥ pṛṣṭāḥ-bhaginyaḥ, ko'smākamavavaditumāgamiṣyati? tāḥ kathayanti-āryapanthakaḥ| kimāryo mahāpanthakaḥ ? na hyayam, sa tvanyaścūḍāpanthakaḥ| dvādaśavargīyābhiḥ śrutam| tāvadavadhyāyanti| bhaginyaḥ paśyataḥ, kathaṃ mātṛgrāmaḥ paribhūtaḥ ? yena tribhirmāsairekā gāthā paṭhitā, sāpi na pravṛttā| imā bhikṣuṇyastripiṭā dhārmakathikā yuktamuktapratibhānāḥ, sa kila kimāsāmavavadiṣyatīti ? tāḥ kathayanti-bhaginyaḥ, ṣaḍjanyo dvādaśahastikābhirlatābhi siṃhāsanaṃ prajñapayantu| ṣaḍjanyaḥ śrāvastīṃ praviśya rathyāvīthicatvaraśṛṅgāṭakeṣvārocayantu-so'smākaṃ tādṛśo'vavādaka āgamiṣyati, yo'smākaṃ tanusatyāni na drakṣyati| tena saṃsāre ciraṃ vastavyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti| yena na kaścit putramoṭikāputro'lpaśruta utsahate bhikṣuṇīravavaditum| tāsāṃ ṣaḍbhiḥ janībhiḥ dvādaśahastikābhiḥ latābhiḥ siṃhāsanaṃ prajñaptam, ṣaḍbhikṣuṇībhiḥ śrāvastīṃ praviśya rathyāvīthicatvaraśṛṅgāṭakeṣvārocitam-so'smākaṃ tādṛśo'vavādaka āgamiṣyati, yo'smākaṃ tanusatyāni na drakṣyati| tena saṃsāre ciraṃ vastavyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti| āyuṣmān panthakaḥ pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya śrāvastīṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat| kṛtabhaktakṛtyaḥ paścādbhaktapiṇḍapātrapratikrāntaḥ pātracīvaraṃ pratisamayya pādau prakṣālya vihāraṃ praviṣṭaḥ pratisaṃlayanāya| athāyuṣmān panthakaḥ sāyāhne pratisaṃlayanād vyutthāya saṃghāṭīmādāyaḥ anyatamena bhikṣuṇā paścācchramaṇena saṃprasthitaḥ| anekāni prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi -kāni ca kutūhalajātāni, kānicit pūrvakaiḥ kuśalamūlaiḥ saṃcodyamānāni| adrākṣīt sā pariṣat āyuṣmantaṃ panthakaṃ dūrādeva| dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ parasparaṃ pṛcchati-kataro'tra bhikṣuṇyavavādakaḥ ? kiṃ puraḥśramaṇaḥ, āhosvit paścāchramaṇaḥ ? tatraike kathayanti-puraḥśramaṇaḥ| te'vadhyāyitumārabdhā-paśyata bhadanta, saṃcintya vayaṃ bhikṣuṇīrbhirviheṭhitāḥ| yena tribhirmāsairekā gāthā paṭhitā, sāpi na pravṛttā, sa kiṃ bhikṣuṇīravavadiṣyati, dharmaṃ vā vācayiṣyati , gacchāmaḥ| apare kathayanti-tiṣṭhāmo yadi dharmaṃ deśayiṣyati, śroṣyāmaḥ| atha na, gacchāmaḥ| iti sā parṣat samavasthitā| āyuṣmatā panthakena siṃhāsanaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ prajñaptakam| dṛṣṭvā saṃlakṣayati-kiṃ tāvat prasādajātābhiḥ prajñaptamāhosvit viheṭhanābhiprāyābhiḥ ? paśyati-yāvat viheṭhanābhiprāyābhiḥ| āyuṣmatā panthakena gajabhujasadṛśaṃ bāhumabhiprasārya taṃ siṃhāsanaṃ yathāsthāne sthāpitam| āyuṣmān panthakastatra niṣaṇnaḥ| sa niṣīdan kaiścit dṛṣṭaḥ, kaiścit na dṛṣṭaḥ| athātrastha āyuṣmān panthakastadrūpaṃ samādhiṃ samāpanno yatho samāhite citte sve āsane'ntarhitaḥ, pūrvasyāṃ diśi uparivihāyasamabhyudgamya pūrvavat yāvat ṛddhiprātihāryāṇī divarśya tān ṛdhyabhisaṃskārān pratiprasrabhya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ| niṣadya āyuṣmān panthakastā bhikṣuṇīrāmantrayate-mayā bhaginyastribhirmāsairekā gāthā paṭhitā| utsahetavyāni (?) śrotumekagāthāyāḥ saptarātriṃdivasānyanyaiḥ padairvyañjanairarthaṃ vibhaktum ?
pāpaṃ na kuryānmanasā na vācā
kāyena vā kiṃcana sarvaloke|
riktaḥ kāmaiḥ smṛtimān saṃprajānan
duḥkhaṃ na sa vidyādanarthopasaṃhitam||6|| iti|
sarvapāpasyaṃ bhagavān kāraṇamāha-yāvadgāthārthasyārthamadhītaṃ yāti, tāvad dvādaśabhiḥ prāṇisahasraiḥ satyāni dṛṣṭāni| kaiścicchrotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam, kaiścit sakṛdāgāmiphalam, kaiścidanāgāmiphalam, kaiścit pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam, kaiścicchrāvakavodhau cittānyutpāditāni, kaiścita pratyekāyāṃ bodhau, kaiścidanuttarāyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau cittānyutpāditāni| yadbhūyasā sā pariṣad buddhanimnā dharmapravaṇā saṃghaprāgbhārā vyavasthitā| athāyuṣmān panthakastāṃ pariṣadaṃ dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣyotthāyāsanāt prakrāntaḥ| sa bhikṣubhirāgacchan dṛṣṭaḥ| te saṃlakṣayanti-adyāyuṣmatā panthakena mahājanakāyaḥ prasādito bhaviṣyati| te na śaknuvantyāyuṣmantaṃ panthakaṃ saṃmukhamapriyaṃ praṣṭum| taiḥ paścācchramaṇaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ| āyuṣman, adya āyuṣmatā panthakena kiṃ mahājanakāyo na prasādito vā prasāditaḥ ? āyuṣmatā na kaścit aprasāditaḥ| bhagavatā vārāṇasyāṃ ṛṣivadane mṛgadāve triparivartaṃ dvādaśākāraṃ dharmyaṃ cakraṃ pravartitam, tadadyāyuṣmatā panthakenānupravartitam| yāvadbhāthārthaṃ na vibhajati, tāvad dvādaśabhiḥ prāṇisahasraiḥ satyāni dṛṣṭāni||
tatra bhagavān bhikṣūnāmantrayate sma-eṣo'gro me bhikṣavo bhikṣūṇāṃ mama śrāvakāṇāṃ cetovivartakuśalānāṃ yaduta panthako bhikṣuḥ| bhikṣavo buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ pṛcchanti-paśya bhadanta dvādaśavargīyābhirāyuṣmataḥ panthakasyānarthaṃ kariṣyāma irtyathaṃ eva kṛtaḥ| bhagavānāha-na bhikṣava etarhi yathā atīte'pyadhvani ābhiranarthaṃ kariṣyāma ityartha eva kṛtaḥ| tacchrūyatām||
bhūtapūrvamevaṃ bhikṣavo'nyatamasmin karvaṭake brāhmaṇaḥ prativasati| tena sadṛśātkulātkalatramānītam| sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati| tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayato bhūyaḥ krīḍati ramate paricārayati yāvat dvādaśa putrā jātāḥ| tena teṣāṃ niveśaḥ kṛtaḥ| apareṇa samayena tasya patnī kālagatā| so'pi brāhmaṇo vṛddhāvasthāyāṃ jātaḥ| andhībhūtasya snaṣā duścāriṇyaḥ| yadā tāsāṃ svāmino bahirnirgatā bhavanti, tadā tāḥ parapuruṣaiḥ sārdhaṃ paricārayanti| sa brāhmaṇaḥ śabde kṛtāvī| sa jānāti-ayaṃ mama putrasya śabdaḥ, ayaṃ parapuruṣasyeti| sa puruṣāṇāṃ padaśabdān śrutvā tāḥ snuṣā garjayati| tāḥ saṃlakṣayanti- ayaṃ brāhmaṇo'smākamanarthāya pratipannaḥ| tāstasya cakaṭyodanaṃ kāñjikacchiṭiṃ cānuprayacchanti| sa brāhmaṇaḥ putrāṇāṃ kathayati-mamaitāḥ snuṣāścakaṭyodanaṃ kāñjikacchiṭiṃ cānuprayacchanti| taistā uktāḥ-kiṃ kāraṇaṃ yūyaṃ tātasya cakaṭyodanaṃ kāñjikacchiṭiṃ cānuprayacchata ? tāḥ kathayanti- tasya puṇyāni parikṣīṇāni, asyārthe piparīkāyāṃ taṇḍulāḥ prakṣiptā bhavanti, cakaṭyodanaṃ parivartate, dadhi prakṣiptaṃ kāñjikaṃ parivartate| te kathayanti-kimetadevaṃ bhaviṣyati ? tāḥ kathayati-vayaṃ yuṣmākaṃ pratyakṣīkariṣyāmaḥ| tāḥ kathayanti-asmābhiḥ pratijñātamidānīṃ nirvoḍhavyam| tābhiḥ kumbhakāraḥ uktaḥ śakṣyasi tvaṃ bhadramukhaṃ ekamukhike dve sthālyau kartum ? sa kathayati-śakṣyāmi| tenaikamukhike dve sthālyau kṛte| tābhirekasyāṃ sthālyāṃ cakaṭitaṇḍulāḥ prakṣitāḥ, dvitīyāyāṃ kāñjikam| tābhiḥ svāmināṃ purastādekasya sthālyāṃ taṇḍulāḥ prakṣiptā ekasyāṃ dadhi| tābhiḥ sādhitam| kathayanti-āryaputrasya kiṃ tāvattātastatprathamataḥ paribhuktāmāhosvit yūyam| te kathayanti-tātastāvatparibhuktām| tābhisteṣāṃ purastāttasyaikasyāḥ sthālyā uddhṛtya cakaṭyodanaṃ dattaṃ dvitīyāyāḥ kāñjikam| tata evaṃ tābhisteṣāmekasyāḥ sthālyā uddhṛtya śālyodanaṃ dattaṃ dvitīyāyā dadhi uddhṛtam| te tasya kathayanti-tāta, tava puṇyāni parikṣīṇāni| yata ekasyāṃ sthālyāṃ śālitaṇḍulāḥ prakṣiptāḥ, dvitīyasyāṃ dadhi, taccakaṭyodanaṃ kāñjikaṃ ca parivṛttam| brāhmaṇaḥ saṃlakṣayati- mayā hastocchrayaśatairbhogāḥ samudānītāḥ| kiṃ kāraṇaṃ mama puṇyāni parikṣīṇāni ? tena tāsāmapratyakṣaṃ mahānasaṃ praviśya paryeṣamāṇena hastasaṃsparśenaikamukhe dve sthālyau labdhe| tena gopāyite| tena teṣāṃ putrāṇāmāgatānāṃ te pradarśite-praśyata, mama puṇyāni parikṣīṇāni| gatvā paśyadhvamasmākaṃ gṛha eva ekamukhī sthālī| putraka, anyeṣu geheṣu na sthālīdvayaṃ tvekamukhamasmākaṃ mandabhāgyānām| taistāḥ patnyaḥ sutāḍitāḥ| tāḥ saṃlakṣayanti-ayaṃ brāhmaṇo'smākamanarthāya pratipannakaḥ| praghātayāma iti| tena ca pradeśenāhituṇḍika āgataḥ| tāḥ pṛcchanti-asti sarpa iti ? sa kathayati-kīdṛśaṃ sarpaṃ mṛgayatha jīvantamāhosvit mṛtakamiti ? tāḥ kathayanti-mṛtakam| sa saṃlakṣayati-kimetā mṛtakena sarpeṇa kariṣyanti ? nūnametā etaṃ vṛddhaṃ mārayitukāmā bhaviṣyanti| dharmatā khalu sarpasya ruṣitasya dvayoḥ sthānayorviṣaṃ saṃkrāmati-śirasi pucche ca| tena roṣitvā śiraḥ pucchaṃ svayaṃ chittvā tāsāṃ madhye sarpo dattaḥ| tābhirjomāṃ sādhayitvā sa brāhmaṇa uktaḥ-tāta, hilimāṃ joma pāsyasi ? sa brāhmaṇaḥ saṃlakṣayati- kimetā me hilimāṃ jomāṃ dāsyanti ? nūnaṃ kiṃcit abhaiṣajyaṃ dattaṃ bhaviṣyati| sa saṃlakṣayati-pibāmi, yathā ca tathā marāmi| tābhistasya hilimā jomā dattā| tena pītā| tasya bāṣpeṇa paṭale sphuṭite| sa draṣṭumārabdhaḥ| sa nipatyāvasthitaḥ| kathayati ca-marāmi marāmīti| tāḥ kathayanti-śīghraṃ mā pātu | tāḥ kathayanti-tāta, bhūyaḥ pāsyasi ? sa kathayati-pāsyāmīti| tābhistasya bhūyaḥ hilimā jomā dattā| tena bhūyaḥ pītā| tasya tena bāṣpeṇa bhūyasyā mātrayā paṭale sphuṭite| sa spaṣṭataraṃ draṣṭumārabdhaḥ| tāḥ pūrvaṃ yathā tasyāndhasya tato viśvastā vihṛtavantyastathaiva vihartumārabdhāḥ| sa daṇḍaṃ gṛhītvā utthitaḥ| kathayati ca-kiṃ yūyaṃ jānītha idānīmapyahaṃ na paśyāmi ? paśyāmyahamidānīmiti| tāḥ salajjāḥ niṣpalāyitāḥ||
kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavaḥ| yo'sau brāhmaṇaḥ, eṣa evāsau panthakastena kālena tena samayena| yāstāstasya dvādaśa snuṣāḥ, etā eva tā dvādaśavargīyāḥ| tadāpyābhirasyānarthaṃ kariṣyāma ityartha eva kṛtaḥ| etarhyapi ābhirasyānarthaṃ kariṣyāma ityartha eva kṛtaḥ||
bhikṣavo buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ pṛcchanti-paśya bhadanta bhagavatā āyuṣmān panthakaḥ parīttenāvavādenācodya saṃsārakāntārāduttārya atyantaniṣṭhe anuttare yogakṣeme nirvāṇe pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ| bhagavānāha-na bhikṣava etarhi yathā atīte'pyadhvanyeṣa mayā parīttenāvavādenācodya mahatyaiśvaryādhipatye pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ| tacchrūyatām||
bhūtabhūtaṃ bhikṣavo'nyatamasmin karvaṭake gṛhapatiḥ prativasati āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogaḥ| tena sadṛśātkulātkalatramānītam| sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati| tasya putro jātaḥ| sa patnīmāmantrayate-bhadre, jāto'smākaṃ ṛṇaharaḥ| gacchāmi, ahaṃ paṇyamādāya mahāsamudramavatarāmi| sā āha-evaṃ kuruṣva| sa gṛhapatiḥ saṃlakṣayati-yadyahamasyai prabhūtān kārṣāpaṇān dāsyāmi, parapuruṣaiḥ sārdhaṃ vihariṣyati| tena tasyāḥ kārṣāpaṇā na dattāḥ| tasmin karpaṭake śreṣṭhī prativasati tasya gṛhapatervayasyaḥ| tasya haste prabhūtāḥ kārṣāpaṇāḥ sthāpitāḥ- yadi mama patnyā bhaktācchādena yogodvahanaṃ kuryāḥ| sa paṇyamādāya mahāsamudramavatīrṇaḥ| tatraivānayena vyasanamāpannaḥ| tayā sa dārako jñātibalena svahastabalena vā āyāpitā (patitvā) pālito vardhitaḥ| sa mātaraṃ pṛcchati-amba, kimasmākaṃ pitā pitāmahāśca karmākārṣuḥ ? sā saṃlakṣayati- yadyasya vakṣyāmi mahāsamudre potasaṃvyavahāriṇa āsan iti, sthānametadvidyate yadeṣo'pi mahāsamudramavatariṣyatīti, tatraiva anayena vyasanamāpatsyate| śrutamāhitastava pitā va pitāmahāśca ihaiva vāṇijyamakārṣuḥ| sa kathayati- kārṣāpaṇān mamānuprayaccha, yairihaiva vāṇijyaṃ kariṣyāmi| mātā kathayati-kuto mama kārṣāpaṇāḥ ? tvaṃ mayā kathaṃcit jñātibalena svahastabalena āyāpitaḥ poṣitaḥ saṃvardhitaḥ| kuto me kārṣāpaṇānāṃ vibhavaḥ ? api tvayaṃ śreṣṭhī tava pitṛvayasyo bhavati| asya sakāśāt kārṣāpaṇān gṛhītvā karma kuru| sa tasya gṛhaṃ gataḥ| tasyānyatamena puruṣeṇa yāvat dvirapi vināśitaḥ| sa tamavasādayati| tasya ca gṛhāt preṣyadārikāyāḥ saṃkāratalasyopari mṛtamūṣikāṃ dṛṣṭvā prayacchati chorayitum| sa śreṣṭhī tasya puruṣasya kathayati- yaḥ puruṣaḥ syāt, śakyate anayā mṛtamūṣikayā ātmānamuddhartum| tena dārakeṇa śrutam| sa saṃlakṣayati-mahātmaiṣaḥ| na śakyamanena yadvā tadvā vaktum| nūnaṃ śakyamanayā mṛtamūṣikayā ātmānamuddhartum| sa tasyā dārikāyāḥ pṛṣṭhato nirgataḥ| tasyā dārikayā saṃkāre choritā| sa tāṃ mṛtamūṣikāmādāya vīthīṃ gataḥ| tatra vāṇijako biḍālena krīḍitvā sthitaḥ| tena tasya biḍālasya mṛtamūṣikā darśitā| sa tāṃ dṛṣṭvā utpatitumārabdhaḥ| tena vāṇijakena dāraka ucyate- anuprayaccha asya biḍālasya mṛtamūṣikām| sa kathayati-kimayaṃ kalikayā dīyate ? mūlyamanuprayaccha| tena tasya kalāyānāmañjalipūro dattaḥ| sa saṃlakṣayati-yadyetān bhakṣayiṣyāmi, mūlameva bhakṣitaṃ bhaviṣyati| sa tān bhrāṣṭre bharjayitvā śītalasya pānīyasya vardhanīyasya pūrṇaṃ kṛtvā tadgṛhya tasmātsthānakānniṣkramya yasmin pradeśe kāṣṭhahārakā viśrāmyanti, tasmin pradeśe gatvāvasthitaḥ| kāṣṭhahārakā āgatāh| tenoktāḥ-mātulāḥ,arpayata kāṣṭhabhārakāḥ, muhūrtaṃ viśrāmyatāṃ| taiḥ kāṣṭhabhārāḥ sthāpitāḥ| tena teṣāṃ kalāyānāṃ stokaṃ dattaṃ śītalaṃ ca pānīyaṃ pātam| te kathayanti-bhāgineya, kka yāsyasi? kāṣṭhānām| bhāgineya, vayaṃ tāvat kālyamevotthāya gatvā idānīmāgacchāmaḥ| tvamidānīṃ gacchan kiyatā āgamiṣyami ? taistasyaikaikaṃ kāṣṭhamanupradattam| tasya kāṣṭhamūlikā saṃpannā| sa tāṃ gṛhītvā pratinivṛttaḥ| sa tāṃ vikrīya kalāyānāṃ gṛhītvā bharjayitvā udakasya kumbhaṃ pūrayitvā tasminneva pradeśe gatvāvasthitaḥ| te kāṣṭhahārakāstathaiva tena kalāyaiḥ saṃvibhaktāḥ, śītalena pānīyena saṃtarpitāḥ| te tasya kathayanti-bhāgineya, divase divase tvaṃ kalāyān pānīyaṃ ca gṛhītvā āgamya atraiva tiṣṭha| vayaṃ tavopari kāṣṭhamūlikāmānayiṣyāmaḥ| sa divase divase tathaiva kartumārabdhaḥ| sa teṣāṃ kathayati-mātula, mā yūyaṃ kāṣṭhabhārān vīthīṃ nayatha| mama gṛhe sthāpayata| yuṣmākamevaṃ piṇḍitamūlyaṃ dāsyāmi| taistasya gṛhe kāṣṭhabhārakāḥ sthāpitāḥ| apareṇa samayena saptāhavardalikā jātāḥ| tena tāni kāṣṭhabhārakāṇi vikrītāni| tasya prabhūto lābhaḥ saṃpannaḥ| sa saṃlakṣayati-etatpratikruṣṭataraṃ vāṇijyānāṃ yaduta kāṣṭhavāṇijyam| sa saṃlakṣayati-api candanakāṣṭhena kāṣṭhavāṇijyameva| yannvahamukkarikāpaṇaṃ prasārayeyam| tena ukkarikāpaṇaḥ prasāritaḥ| sa dharmeṇa vyavaharati| tasya tatprabhūto lābhaḥ saṃpannaḥ| sa saṃlakṣayati-etat pratikruṣṭataraṃ vāṇijyānāṃ yaduta ukkarikāpaṇaḥ| yannvahaṃ gāndhikāpaṇaṃ prasārayeyam| tena gāndhikāpaṇaḥ prasāritaḥ| tasya prabhūto lābhaḥ saṃpannaḥ| sa saṃlakṣayati-etadapi pratikruṣṭataraṃ ca tadvāṇijyānāṃ pūrvavat| tena sarve hairaṇyikā abhibhūtāḥ| tasya mūṣikāhairaṇyako mūṣikāhairaṇyika iti saṃjñā saṃvṛttā| te hairiṇyikāḥ kathayanti-bhavantaḥ, sarve vayamanena mūṣikāhairaṇyikenābhibhūtāḥ vayamenaṃ mānaṃ grāhayāmaḥ yathā mahāsamudramavataret, tatraivānayena vyasanamāpatsyate tathā kariṣyāma iti| te tasya nātidūre sthitvā svaiḥ kathāsaṃlāpena tiṣṭhanti-yathāpi nāma bhavantaḥ puruṣo hastigrīvāyāṃ gatvā aśvapṛṣṭhena gacchet, aśvapṛṣṭhena gatvā śibikāyāṃ gacchet, śibikāyāṃ gatvā padbhyāṃ gacchet, evamevāsya mūṣikāhairaṇyikasya pitā ca pitāmahāśca samudre potasaṃvyavahāriṇa āsan| eṣa idānīṃ kṛcchreṇa jīvikāṃ kalpayati hairaṇyikāpaṇaṃ vāhayatīti| śrutvā sa kathayati-kiṃ kathayata ? te kathayanti-tava pitā ca pitāmahāśca potasaṃvyavahāriṇa āsan| sa tvamidānīṃ kṛcchreṇa jīvikāṃ kalpayasi, hairaṇyikāpaṇaṃ vāhayasi ? sa gṛhaṃ gatvā mātaraṃ pṛcchati-amba, satyamasmākaṃ pitā va pitāmahāśca mahāsamudre potasaṃvyavahāriṇa āsan ? sā saṃlakṣayati-nūnamanena kiṃcitkutaścit śrutaṃ syāt| tadapratirūpaṃ syāt, yadahaṃ mṛṣāvādena vañjayeyam| satyaṃ putra| sa kathayati-anujānīṣva, ahamapi mahāsamudramavatariṣyāmi| sā kathayati-putra, ihaiva tiṣṭha| sa bhūyo bhūyaḥ kathayati- gacchāmi| tasya nirbandhaṃ jñātvā anujñātaḥ| tena ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kṛtam-yo yuṣmākamutsahate mūṣikāhairaṇyena sārdhamaśulkenāgulmenātarapaṇyena mahāsamudramavataritum, sa mahāsamudragamanīyaṃ paṇyaṃ samudānayatu| pañcamātrairvaṇikśatairmahāsamudragamanīyaṃ paṇyaṃ samuānītam| atha mūṣikāhairaṇyikaḥ kṛtamaṅgalakautūhalasvastyayanaḥ śakaṭairbhārairmūṭaiḥ piṭakairuṣṭrairgobhirgardabhaiḥ paṇyamāropya mahāsamudaṃ saṃprasthitaḥ| so'nupūrveṇa mahāsamudramavatarannanuprāptaḥ| te vaṇijo mahāsamudraṃ dṛṣṭvā bhītāḥ| notsahante vahanamabhiroḍhum| sārthavāhaḥ karṇadhārasya kathayati-kathaya kathaya bhoḥ puruṣa yathābhūtaṃ mahāsamudrasya varṇam| tataḥ karṇadhāraḥ uddhoṣayitumārabdhaḥ -santyetasmin mahāsamudre imānyevaṃrūpāṇi ratnāni tadyathā- maṇayo muktā vaiḍūryaśaṅkhaśilāpravāla rajatajātarūpamaśmagarbho musāragalvo lohitakā dakṣiṇāvartaḥ| yo yuṣmākamutsahate evaṃrūpai ratnairātmānaṃ samyaksukhena prīṇayitum, mātāpitarau putradārān dāsīdāsakarmakarapauruṣeyaṃ mitrāmātyajñātisālohitaṃ kālena kālaṃ śramaṇabrāhmaṇebhyo dakṣiṇāṃ pratiṣṭhāpayitum, mūrdhagāminī saubhāsikīṃ sukhavipākāmāyatyāṃ svargasaṃvartanīm, sa mahāsamudramavataratu| saṃpattikāmolokaḥ| mahājanakāyo'bhirūḍho yatastadvahanamasahyaṃ jātam| sārthavāhaḥ| saṃlakṣayati-kimidānīṃ vakṣyāmi avatarateti ? sa karṇadhārasya kathayati-ghoṣayaḥ bhoḥ puruṣaḥ mahāsamudrasya yathābhūtaṃ varṇam| tataḥ karṇadhāra uddhoṣitumārabdhaḥ-śṛṇvantu bhavanto jambudvīpakā vaṇijaḥ| santyasmin mahāsamudre imānyevaṃrūpāṇi mahānti mahābhayāni, tadyathā timibhayaṃ timiṃgilabhayaṃ timitimiṃgilabahyamāvartabhayaṃ kumbhīrabhayaṃ śiśubhayamantarjalagatānāṃ parvatānāmāghātabhayam| caurā apyatrāgacchanti nīlaiḥ sitairvanacāriṇaḥ, asmākaṃ sarveṇa sarvaṃ jīvitādvyavaropayiṣyanti| yena yuṣmākaṃ priyamātmānaṃ pariktyatvā mātāpitarau putradāraṃ dāsīdāsakarmakarapauruṣeyaṃ mitrāmātyajñātisālohitaṃ mahāsamudramavataratu| alpāḥ śūrā bahavaḥ kātarāḥ| mahājanakāyo'vatīrṇaḥ, yatstadvahanaṃ sahuaṃ saṃvṛttam| tataḥ karṇadhārastriruddhoṣaṇāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kṛtvā tataḥ paścādekāṃ vastrāṃ muñcati, dvitrivastrāṃ muñcati, yatastadvahanaṃ mahākarṇadhārasaṃdhānabalavadvāyusaṃpreritaṃ mahāmegha iva saṃprasthito'nuguṇena vāyunā yāvada ratnadīpamanuprāptam| tataḥ karṇadhāra uddhoṣayitumārabdhaḥ-śṛṇvantu bhavanto jambudbīpakā vaṇijaḥ, santyasmin ratnadvīpe kācamaṇayo ratnasadṛśāḥ| te bhavadbhirupaparīkṣyopaparīkṣya grahītavyāḥ| mā vaḥ pañcājjambudvīpaprāptānāṃ paścāttāpo bhaviṣyati| asminneva ca ratnadvīpe kroñcakumārikā nāma rākṣasyaḥ prativasanti| tāḥ puruṣaṃ tathā tathā upalālayanti yathā tatraivānayena vyasanamāpadyante| asminneva ratnadvīpe madanīyāni phalāni santi| tāni yaḥ paribhuṅkte, sa saptarātraṃ mūrcchitastiṣṭhati| tāni bhavadbhirna paribhoktavyāni| asminneva ca ratnadvīpe'manuṣyāḥ prativasanti| te manuṣyāṇāṃ saptāhaṃ marṣayanti| saptāhasyātyayāt tādṛśaṃ vāyumutsṛjanti yena vahanamapahriyate yathāpi tadakṛtakāryāṇām| yaṃ śrutvā te vaṇijo'vahitā apramattā avasthitāḥ| taistadvahanaṃ ratnānāmupaparīkṣyopaparīkṣya pūritaṃ tadyathā tilataṇḍulakolakulatthānām| te anuguṇena vāyunā jambudvīpamanuprāptāḥ| evaṃ yāvat saptakṛtvaḥ saṃsiddhayānapātra āgataḥ| sa mātrā'bhihitaḥ-putra, atra niveśaḥ kriyatāmiti| sa kathayati-agradhanikaṃ tāvacchinadmi, tataḥ paścānniveśaṃ kariṣyāmi| sa tayā uktaḥ-putra na tava pitā na pitāmaho dhanikaḥ kṛtaḥ, kutastava dhaniko jātaḥ ? sa kathayati-amba, ahameva jānāmi| tena cātūratnamayyaścatasro mūṣikāḥ kāritāḥ| tena suvarṇasya phelāṃ pūrayitvā catasro mūṣikāścaturṣu pārśveṣu sthāpayitvā śreṣṭhigṛhaṃ gataḥ| sa śreṣṭhī tadā tasyaiva tadvarṇaṃ bhāṣamāṇastiṣṭhati-paśyata bhavanto mūṣikāhairaṇyikaḥ kathaṃ puṇyamaheśākhyo yaṃ yameva gṛhṇāti tṛṇaṃ vā loṣṭaṃ vā sarvaṃ tat suvarṇaṃ saṃpadyate| sa ca tathā kathāsaṃlāpena tiṣṭhati| dauvārikeṇa cāsya gatvā ārocitam-mūṣikāhairaṇyiko dvāri tiṣṭhati| sa kathayati-praviśatu, mūṣikāhairaṇyikaṃ vā ānayeti| sa praviśya kathayati-idaṃ te mūlam, ayaṃ lābhaḥ| pratigṛhyatām| sa āha-vismarāmi, satyaṃ yattava kiṃciddattakamiti| ahaṃ te smārayiṣyāmi| tena smāritam| sa pṛcchati-kasya tvaṃ putra iti| amukasya gṛhapateḥ|śreṣṭhī kathayati- tvaṃ mama vayasyaputro bhavasi| mayaiva tava dātavyam| tava pitrā gacchatā mama haste kārṣāpaṇāḥ sthāpitāḥ| tena śreṣṭhinā duhitā sarvālaṃkāravibhūṣitā tasya bhāryārthamanupradattā||
kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo'sau śreṣṭhī, ahameva tena kālena tena samayena| yo'sau mūṣikāhairaṇyikaḥ, eṣa eva panthakastena kālena tena samayena| tadāpyeṣa mayā parīttenāvavādenācodya mahatyaiśvarye pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ| etarhyapyeṣa mayā parīttenāvavādenāvavādya saṃsārakāntārādurttārya atyantaniṣṭhe'nuttare yogakṣeme nirvāṇe pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ||
bhikṣavo buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ pṛcchanti-kiṃ bhadanta panthakena karma kṛtaṃ yasya karmaṇo vipākena dhanvaḥ paramadhanvaścūḍaḥ paramacūḍo jātaḥ ? panthakenaiva bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāni| na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣveva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu vipacyante śubhānyaśubhāni ca|
na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatairapi|
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām||7||
bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo viṃśativarṣasahastrāyuṣi prajāyāṃ kāśyapo nāma śāstā loka utpannastathāgato'rhan samyaksaṃbuddho vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavidanuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devānāṃ ca manuṣyāṇāṃ ca buddho bhagavān| sa viṃśatibhirbhikṣusahasraiḥ parivāro vārāṇasīmupaniśritya viharati sma| tasyaiva pravacane bhikṣurāsīt tripiṭaḥ| anena tatra mātsaryeṇa na kasyaciccatuṣpadikāpi gāthā uddiṣṭā| bhūyo'nyasmin karpaṭake saukarika āsīt| tasmāt karpaṭakānnadīpāre dvitīyaṃ karpaṭakam| tatra parvaṇī pratyupasthitā| sa saṃlakṣayati-yadi sūkarān praghātya nayiṣyāmi, māṃsasya krayiko na bhaviṣyati, kledaṃ gamiṣyati| jīvantameva gṛhītvā gacchāmi| tatra tatra praghātya neṣyāmi, yatra yatra krāyiko'sti| sa prabhūtān sūkarān jānuṣu baddhvā nāvamāropya saṃprasthitaḥ| sā naustaiḥ parispandamānairbāḍitā| tatraivānayena vyasanamāpannaḥ| so'pi saukariko'tra stotenohyamānaḥ| tasyā nadyāstīre pañca pratyekabuddhaśatāni prativasanti| teṣāmekaḥ pratyekabuddhaḥ pānīyasyārthe nadīṃ gataḥ| tena sa dṛṣṭaḥ| sa saṃlakṣayati-kiṃ tāvadayaṃ mṛtaḥ āhosvijjīvatīti ? paśyati yāvajjīvati sa| tena gajabhujasadṛśaṃ bāhumabhiprasārya uddhṛtya vālukāyāḥ sthalaṃ kṛtvā tatrāvamūrdhakaḥ sthāpitaḥ| tasya kāyāt pānīyaṃ niḥsṛtam| sa vyutthitaḥ| manuṣyapadāni paśyati| sa tena pādānusāreṇa gato yāvatpaśyati pañcamātrāṇi pratyekabuddhaśatāni| sa teṣāṃ patreṇa puṣpeṇa phalena dantakāṣṭhena copasthānaṃ kartumārabdhaḥ| te tasya pātraśeṣamanuprayacchanti| tena bhuktam| atha te pratyekabuddhāḥ paryaṅkaṃ baddhvā dhyāyanti| tadā so'pyekānte sthitvā paryaṅkaṃ baddhvā dhyāyati| sa tatrāsaṃjñikamutpādya asaṃjñisattveṣu deveṣūpapannaḥ||
kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavaḥ| yo'sau kāśyapasya samyaksaṃbuddhasya pravacane bhikṣustripiṭaḥ āsīt, paścādasau saukarikaḥ, eṣa eva panthako bhikṣuḥ| yadanena mātsaryeṇa na kasyaciccatuṣpadikā gāthā uddiṣṭā, yacca sūkarān praghātya yaccāsaṃjñisattvebhya ihopapannaḥ, tasya karmaṇo vipākena cūḍaḥ paramacūḍo dhanvaḥ paramadhanvaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ||
yadā āyuṣmān panthakaḥ svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajitaḥ, jīvakena śrutam-panthakaḥ svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajita iti| sa saṃlakṣayati-yadi bhagavān rājagṛhamāgamiṣyati, ahaṃ buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojayiṣyāmi sthāpayitvā bhadantaṃ panthakam| bhagavān yathābhiramyaṃ śrāvastīṃ vihṛtya yena rājagṛhaṃ tena cārikāṃ prakrāntaḥ| anupūrveṇa cārikāṃ caran rājagṛhamanuprāptaḥ| rājagṛhe viharati veṇuvane kalandanivāpe| aśrauṣijjīvakaḥ kumārabhūtaḥ-bhagavān magadheṣu janapadacārikāṃ caran rājagṛhe viharati veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe| śrutvā punaryena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvaikānte niṣaṇṇaḥ| ekāntaniṣaṇṇaṃ jīvakaṃ kumārabhūtaṃ bhagavān dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati| anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm| atha jīvakaḥ kumārabhūtaḥ utthāyāsanādekāṃsamutarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena bhagavāṃstenāñjaliṃ praṇamya bhagavantametadavocat-adhivāsayati me bhagavāñchvo'ntargṛhe bhaktena sārdhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghena| durāsadā buddhā bhagavanto duṣprasahāḥ| sa na śaknoti bhagavantaṃ vaktuṃ sthāpayitvā bhadantaṃ panthakam| atha jīvakaḥ kumārabhūto bhagavato bhāṣitamabhinandyānumodya bhagavato'ntikāt prakrānto yenāyuṣmānānandastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramyāyuṣmata ānandasya pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ| ekāntaniṣaṇṇo jīvakaḥ kumārabhūta āyuṣmantamānandamidamacovat-yatkhalu bhadanta ānanda jānīyāḥ-mayā buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃghaḥ śvo'ntargṛhe bhaktenopanimantritaḥ sthāpayitvā bhadantaṃ panthakam| yathā te jīvaka kuśalānāṃ dharmāṇāṃ vṛddhirbhavati| atha jīvakaḥ kumārabhūta āyuṣmata ānandasya bhāṣitamabhinandyānumodya āyuṣmata ānandasya pādau śirasā vanditvā prakrāntaḥ| athāyuṣmānānando'ciraprakrāntaṃ jīvakaṃ kumārabhūtaṃ viditvā yenāyuṣmān panthakastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramyāyuṣmantaṃ panthakamidamavocat-yatkhalvāyuṣman panthaka jānīyāḥ-jīvakena kumārabhūtena buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃghaḥ śvo'ntargṛhe bhaktenopanimantritaḥ sthāpayitvā āyuṣmantaṃ panthakam| yathāsya bhadantānanda kuśalānāṃ dharmāṇāṃ vṛddhirbhavati| sa jīvakaḥ kumārabhūtastāmeva rātriṃ śuci praṇītaṃ khādanīyaṃ bhojanīyaṃ samudānīya kalyamevotthāya āsanāni prajñapya udakamaṇīn pratiṣṭhāpya bhagavato dūtena kālamārocayati-samayo bhadanta, sajjaṃ bhaktaṃ yasyedānīṃ bhagavān kālaṃ manyate| atha bhagavān pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya bhikṣugaṇaparivṛto bhikṣusaṃghapuraskṛto yena jīvakasya kumārabhūtasya niveśanaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramya purastādbhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ| niṣadya bhagavānāyuṣmantamānandamāmantrayate-panthakasyānugantī moktavyā| jīvakaḥ kumārabhūtaḥ sauvarṇabhṛṅgāraṃ gṛhītvā vṛddhānte tiṣṭhati| bhagavān vāridhārāṃ na pratigṛhṇāti| jīvakaḥ kumārabhūtaḥ kathayati- kiṃ kāraṇaṃ bhagavan vāridhārāṃ na pratigṛhṇāti| bhagavānāha- na tāvadbhikṣusaṃgha iti samagra iti| jīvakaḥ kumārabhūtaḥ kathayati-bhagavan, ko'nāgata iti| bhagavānāha-panthako bhikṣuḥ saṃghaḥ| jīvakaḥ kathayati-bhagavan, nāsau mayā nimantrita iti| bhagavānāha-na tvayā jīvaka buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃgho nimantritaḥ ? bhagavan, nimantritaḥ| kimasau bhikṣusaṃghādbahirna vā ? bhagavān kathayati jīvakam-gaccha tvaṃ śabdāpaya| jīvakaḥ kumārabhūtaḥ saṃlakṣayati-kiṃ cāpyahaṃ bhagavato gauraveṇa śabdāpayāmi, na satkṛtya pariveṣayiṣyāmi| tena dūto'nupreṣitaḥ-gaccha, śabdāpayasva| āyuṣmānapi panthakaśca trayodaśabhikṣuśatāni nirmāyāvasthitaḥ| tena dūtena gatvā panthaka iti śabdo muktaḥ| anekairbhikṣubhiḥ prativacanaṃ dattam| sa dūta āgatya jīvakasya kathayati-tathaiva veṇuvanaṃ kalandakanivāpo bhikṣūṇāṃ pūrṇastiṣṭhati| bhagavānāha- gaccha tvaṃ kathaya yo bhūtapanthakaḥ sa āgacchatu| sa gatvā kathayati-yo bhūtapanthakaḥ sa āgacchatu| āyuṣmān panthakastatra gatvā svasyāṃ gatyāṃ niṣaṇṇaḥ| jīvakaḥ kumārabhūto buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ pariveṣayitumārabdhaḥ| āyuṣmantaṃ panthakaṃ na satkṛtya pariveṣayati| bhagavān saṃlakṣayati-sureruprakhye mahāśrāvake jīvakaḥ kumārabhūtaḥ kṣāntiṃ gṛhṇāti| guṇodbhāvanā asya kartavyā| bhagavatā āyuṣmata ānandasya pātraṃ nānupradattam| dharmatā khalu na tāvat sthavirasthavirāṇāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ pātrāṇi pratigṛhyante, yāvadbhagavataḥ pātrapratigrahī na bhaviṣyati| āyuṣmān panthakaḥ saṃlakṣayati-kiṃ kāraṇaṃ bhagavataḥ sthavirasthavirāṇāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ pātrāṇi na gṛhyante ? mayā atra guṇodbhāvanā kartavyā| āyuṣmatā panthakenārdhāsanaṃ kṛtvā gajabhujasadṛśaṃ vāhumabhiprasārya bhagavataḥ pātraṃ gṛhītam| kumārabhūtena jīvakena vṛddhānte sthitena dṛṣṭam| sa saṃlakṣayati-ko'pyayaṃ sthaviro bhikṣuḥ| ṛddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayati| sa pātrānusāreṇa gato yāvatpaśyatyāyuṣmantaṃ panthakam| sa dṛṣṭvā mūrchitakastiṣṭhati| sa jalapariṣekapratyāgataprāṇa āyuṣmataḥ panthakasya pādayornipatya kṣamāpayati, gāthāṃ ca bhāṣate-
nityaṃ caityaguṇo hi candanaraso nityaṃ sugandhyutpalaṃ
nityaṃ bhāṣati kāñcanasya vimalaṃ vaiḍūryaśuddhaṃ dravam|
nityaṃ pāpajane hi krodhamatulaṃ pāṣāṇarekhopamaṃ
nityaṃ cāryajaneṣu prītirvasate kṣāntirdhruvā hryarhatām||8||
āyuṣmān panthakaḥ kathayati-kṣāntaṃ jīvakaḥ||
bhikṣavo buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ pṛcchanti-paśya bhadanta, yadā jīvakaḥ kumārabhūta āyuṣmataḥ panthakasya guṇānāmanabhijñastadā asatkāraḥ prayuktaḥ, yadā guṇānāmabhijñastadā pādayornipatya kṣamāpayati| bhagavānāha-na bhikṣava etarhi yathātīte'dhvanyeṣo'sya guṇānāmanabhijñaḥ, tadā asatkāraṃ prayuktāvān| yadā guṇānāmabhijñastadā pādayornipatya kṣamāpitavān| tacchrūyatām||
bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣava uttarāpathāt sārthavāhaḥ pañcaśatamaśvapaṇyamādāya madhyadeśamāgataḥ| tasya ca vaḍavāyāḥ kukṣāvaśvājāneyo'vakrāntaḥ| sa yameva divasamavakrāntastameva divasamupādāya te'śvā na bhūyo heṣante| sārthavāhaḥ saṃlakṣayati-kiṃ ca mamāśvānāṃ kaścid rogaḥ prādurbhūto bhaviṣyati yena te na heṣante ? apareṇa samayenāśvā vaḍavā prasūtā| tasyāḥ kiśorako jātaḥ| sa yameva divasamupādāya te'śvāḥ saṃcartumapi nārabdhāḥ| sārthavāhaḥ saṃlakṣayati-nūnamayaṃ daurbhāgyasattvo jātaḥ asya doṣeṇa mamāśvānāṃ rogaḥ prādurbhūtaḥ sa tāṃ vaḍavāṃ nityameva vāhayati| tasyā navayavasaṃpannayogyāśanamanuprayacchati| so'nupūrveṇa pūjitaṃ nāmādhiṣṭhānamanuprāptaḥ| tasya tatra varṣārātryaḥ pratyupasthitāḥ| sa saṃlakṣayati-yadi gamiṣyāmi, aśvānāṃ khurāḥ kledaṃ gamiṣyanti, apaṇyībhaviṣyanti| ihaiva varṣāṃ tiṣṭhāmi| sa tasyaiva varṣāmuṣitasya tadvāsino ye śilpinaste svena śilpenopasthānaṃ kurvanti| tasya gamanakāle śilpina upasaṃkrāntāḥ| teṣāṃ tena saṃvibhāgaḥ kṛtaḥ| tatraikaḥ kumbhakāraḥ prativasati| tenāpi tasya svena śilpenopasthānaṃ kṛtam| sa patnyābhihitaḥ-āryaputra, sa sārthavāho gacchati| gaccha, tvaṃ gatvā kiṃcidyācasva| tasmāccalitasya mṛtpiṇḍaṃ gṛhītvopasthitaḥ| sa tena sārthavāhena dṛṣṭaḥ| sa tasya kathayati- bhoḥ puruṣaḥ, aticireṇa tvamāgataḥ| mama kiṃciddātavyam| sa āha- sarvaṃ gatam| tasyāpi sārthavāhasya tasya kiśorasyāntike'maṅgalabuddhiḥ| sa kathayati-api tvayamekaḥ kiśorastiṣṭhati, yadi priyo'si, gṛhītvā gaccha| kumbhakāraḥ kathayati-śobhanam| ahaṃ bhāṇḍāni kariṣyāmi, eṣa bhetsyate| sa kiśorakastasya kumbhakārasya pādau jihvayā leḍhumārabdhaḥ| tasyāśvasyāntike'nunaya utpannaḥ| sa taṃ gṛhītvā gataḥ| sa patnyāḥ uktaḥ-asti kiṃcittvayā tasya sakāśāllabdham ? labdham| ayaṃ kiśorakaḥ| śobhanam| tvaṃ bhāṇḍāni kariṣyasi, eṣa bhetsyate| sa kiśorako'syāḥ pādāni leḍhumārabdhaḥ| tasyā api tasyāntike'nunaya utpannaḥ| sa pakkamānānāṃ bhāṇḍānāṃ madhye parisarpanna kiṃcidbhāṇḍaṃ bhinatti| sā tasya patnī kathayati-śobhanam| ayaṃ kiśorakaḥ saṃprajānan parisarpati| apareṇa smayena kumbhakāro mṛttikārthamāgataḥ| sa kiśorakastasya pṛṣṭhato'nusarannanubaddhaḥ| tena kumbhakāreṇa mṛttikāprasevakaḥ pūritaḥ| tena kiśorakena pṛṣṭhamavanāmitam| tena tasya mṛttikāyāḥ prasevakaḥ pṛṣṭhamāropitaḥ| sa taṃ gṛhītvā gṛhamāgataḥ| tena kumbhakāreṇa patnī uktāḥ- bhadre, śobhanaḥ kiśorakaḥ| na bhūyo mayā mṛttikā voḍhavyā bhaviṣyati| ahamasya tatrāropayiṣyāmi, tvamihāvatārayiṣyasi| sa tasya tuṣān kuṭiṃ cānuprayacchati||
tena kālena tena samayena vārāṇasyāṃ brahmadatto nāma rājā rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca bahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca| tasyāśvājāneyaḥ kālagataḥ| sāmantarājyaiḥ śrutam-brahmadattasya rājño'śvājāneyaḥ kālagata iti| taistasya saṃdiṣṭam-karapratyāyān vā anuprayaccha udyānaṃ vā| te nirgatakaṇṭake'nuvarodhya ānayiṣyāmaḥ| sa teṣāṃ karapratyāyān nānuprayacchati, nāpi taṃ sa udyānaṃ samāgataḥ| sārthavāho'nupūrveṇa vārāṇasīnagaramanuprāptaḥ| brahmadattena rājñā śrutam-uttarāpathāt sārthavāho'śvapaṇyamādāya vārāṇasīmanuprāpta iti| so'mātyānāmantrayate sma-bhavantaḥ, kiyacciraṃ mayeha praviṣṭena sthātavyam ? gacchata, aśvājāneyaṃ paryeṣadhvam| te sārthavāhasya sakāśaṃ gatāḥ| taiste'śvā dṛṣṭāḥ| te'nyonyaṃ kathayanti-bhavantaḥ, ājāneyāste'śvāḥ| na cātra kaścidaśvājāneyo vidyate| sārthavāhaṃ dṛṣṭvā te kathayanti-bhavanto'śvāvaḍavāyā aśvājāneyo jātaḥ| sa ca na dṛśyate| sārthavāhamupasaṃkramya pṛcchanti-asti kaścidaśvastvayā vikrītaḥ kasyacidvā datta iti ? sa kathayati-nāsti kaścidvikrītaḥ| api tvasti mayā pūjitake'dhiṣṭhāne'maṅgalakaḥ kiśorakaḥ kumbhakārasya datta iti| te'nyonyaṃ kathayanti-bhavantaḥ, mahāmūrkho'yaṃ sārthavāhaḥ, yo'yaṃ maṅgalamapahāyāmaṅgalānevādāyāgata iti| te rājānamavalokya pūjitakaṃ gatāḥ| te taṃ kumbhakāramupasaṃkrāntāḥ| upasaṃkramya kathayanti-kumanena kiśorakena karoṣi ? sa āha-eṣa mama mṛttikāṃ vahati| te kathayanti-vayaṃ te tathā gardabhamanuprayacchāmaḥ, tvamasmākamamumanuprayacchasva| kathayati-eṣa me śobhana iti| caturgavayuktaṃ śakaṭamanuprayacchāmaḥ| sa kathayati-eṣa mama śobhana iti| te kathayanti-evaṃ cet saṃpradhāraya vayaṃ śvo bhūya āgamiṣyāmaḥ| ityuktvā prakrāntāḥ| sa kiśorakaḥ kathayati-kimarthaṃ nānuprayacchasi? kiṃ tvaṃ jānāsi mayā mṛttikā voḍhavyā tuṣāśca kuṭisakaṇṭaṃ bhakṣitavyam| mayā rājā kṣatriyo mūrdhābhiṣikto voḍhavyaḥ, sauvarṇasthāle madhumrakṣitakā mūlakā bhakṣitavyāḥ| te yadi saṃkathayanti kośiraka iti, vaktavyāḥ-kiṃ lajjadhvaṃ vaktumaśvājāneya iti ? śvaḥ punarāgatvā te kathayiṣyanti mūlyenānuprayaccheti| vaktavyāḥ -suvarṇalakṣaṃ vānuprayacchatha yāvadvā dakṣiṇena sakthnā kariṣyati tāvadanuprayacchatha| te'parasmin divase upasaṃkramya pṛcchanti-bhoḥ puruṣa, saṃpradhāritaṃ tvayā ? saṃpradharitam-kiṃ lajjadhvaṃ vaktumaśvājāneya iti ? te kathayanti-mūrkhaḥ sa eṣaḥ| kimeṣa jñāsyati ? eṣa aśvājāneyo dhārayati| etadeva tena sārthavāhenāsyārocittaṃ bhaviṣyati| te kathayanti-aśvājāneyo bhavatu| mūlyenānuprayaccha| sa kathayati-suvarṇalakṣaṃ vānuprayacchatha, yāvadvā suvarṇalkṣaṃ dakṣiṇena sakthnā kariṣyati| te saṃlakṣayanti-balavāneṣaḥ| sthānametadvidyate yat prabhūtataramākarṣayati| suvarṇalakṣanamuprayacchāmaḥ| tairbrahmadattasya rājñaḥ saṃdiṣṭaṃ suvarṇalakṣeṇa aśvājāneyo labhyate| rājñāpi saṃdiṣṭam-yūyaṃ yāvatā mūlyena tāvatā gṛhṇīta| taiḥ suvarṇalakṣeṇa gṛhītaḥ| te tamādāya vārāṇasīmāgatāḥ| sa taiśca mandurāyāṃ pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ| tasya paramayogyāśanaṃ dīyate| sa taṃ na paribhuṅkte| kiṃ sarogo bhavadbhiraśvājāneya ānītaḥ ? api tu samanuyuñjyāmahe tāvadenam| atha sūto gāthāṃ bhāṣate-
smarasi turaga ghaṭikarasya śālāṃ
kimihavidhairya viprayuktaḥ|
pariśithilaśirāsthicarmagātraḥ
svadaśanacūrṇitaghāsasya cārī||9||
na carasi baghumatastadarthe
māsīdiha hi cara yānasahasrapūrṇayāyī|
hyavasanamidaṃ tṛṣāpanītaṃ
na carasi kiṃ vada me'dya sādhu pṛṣṭaḥ||10||
tamakathayadamarṣitaḥ sakopaṃ
paramayavārjavadhairyasaṃprayuktaḥ|
upaśamamatha saṃpracintya tasmāt
turagavaro narasūtamaitrabuddhiḥ||11||
tvamiha vidhihitapradābhimānī
na ca vihito bhavato yathāvadasmi|
nidhanamahamiha prayāyamāśu
na ca viduṣāya tareya pūrvyām||12||
suciramapi hi na sajjānāvamāno
yadi guṇavānasi saumya nāvamānaḥ|
kṣaṇamapi khalu sajjanāvamāno
yadi guṇavānasi nāvamānaḥ||13||
sūto rājñaḥ kathayati-devasyānupūrvī na kṛtā yenaiva yavasayogyāśanaṃ na gṛhṇāti| kāsyānupūrvī kṛtā ? asyāyamupacāraḥ| sārdhatṛtīyāni yojanāni mārgaśobhā kartavyā| rājābhiṣiktaścaturaṅgena balakāyena sārdhaṃ pratyudgacchati| yasmin pradeśe sthāpyate, sa pradeśastāmrapaṭṭairbadhyate| rājño jyeṣṭhaputraḥ| sa tasya śataśalākaṃ chatraṃ mūrdhni dhārayati| rājño jyeṣṭhā duhitā sauvarṇena maṇivyajanena makṣikān vārayati| rājño'gramahiṣī sauvarṇasthāle madhumrakṣitakān mūlān bhakṣayato dhārayati| rājño'grāmātyaḥ sauvarṇena lakṣaṇena laḍḍīśchorayati| rāja kathayati-eṣa nāma rājā, nāhaṃ sa rājeti| sūtaḥ kathayati-deva, nāsya sarvakālameṣa upacāraḥ kriyate| api tu saptāhasyātyayādvidheyo bhavati| rājā kathayati-yattāvadatītaṃ na śakyaṃ tatpunaḥ kartum, yadavaśiṣṭaṃ tatkriyatām| yasmin pradeśe tāmrapaṭṭairbaddhaḥ, tasya rājño jyeṣṭhaḥ putraḥ śataśalākāṃ dhārayati, rājño jyeṣṭhā duhitā sauvarṇamanimayavālavyajanena makṣikān vārayati, rājño'gramahiṣī sauvarṇena sthālena madhumrakṣitakān mūlān bhakṣayato dhārayati, rājño'mātyaḥ sauvarṇena lakṣaṇena laḍḍīśchorayati| tamanunayati pārthivaḥ| sasṛtaparamasugandhivilepanānudhārī madhuramadhurakṛtāntarānurāgā nṛpamahiṣī turagottamāya dattā rājñā| udyānabhūmiṃ nirgantukāmo'syāścājāneya upagamya pṛṣṭhamunnāmayati| rājā sūtaṃ pṛcchati-rājā asya pṛṣṭhaṃ duḥkhayati| sa kathayati-kiṃ tu rājā duḥkhamadhirokṣyatīti| yato'nenāvanāmitaṃ sa rājā tamabhiruhya saṃprasthitaḥ| tasya gacchataḥ pānīyamāgatam| sa tatra nāvatarati| rājā sūtaṃ pṛcchati-eṣo bibheti ? deva, naiṣa bibheti| api tu mā rājānaṃ pucchodakena sekṣyāmīti| tasya tatpucchaṃ sauvarṇāyāṃ nālikāyāṃ prakṣiptam| sa taṃ pānīyamuttīrṇaḥ| sa udyānaṃ gatvā pramatto'vasthitaḥ| sāmantarājaiḥ śrutam-yathā rājā brahmadatta udyānaṃ gata iti| tairāgatya nagarasya dvārāṇi bandhayanti| rājñā brahmadattena śrutaṃ sāmantarājairnagaradvārāṇi nigṛhītānīti| so'śvājāneyamabhirūḍhaḥ| antarā ca vārāṇasyantarā codyānamatrāntarā brahmāvatī nāva puṣkiriṇyutpalakumudapuṇḍarīkasaṃchannā| so'śvājāneyaḥ padmopari saran vārāṇasīṃ praviṣṭaḥ| rājā tuṣṭo'mātyānāṃ kathayati-bhavantaḥ,yo rājñaḥ kṣatriyasya mūrdhnābhiṣiktasya jīvitamanuprayacchati, kiṃ tasya kartavyam ? deva, upārdharājyaṃ dātavyam| rājā kathayati-tīryageṣaḥ| kimasyopārdharājyena? api tvenamāgamya saptāhaṃ dānāni dīyantām, puṇyāni kriyantām, akālakaumudī ca kriyatām| amātyaiḥ saptāhaṃ dānāni dātumārabdhāni, puṇyāni kartumārabdhāni, saptāhamakālakaumudī prasthāpitā| sārthavāhaḥ puruṣān pṛcchati-bhavantaḥ, kimakālakaumudī vartate ? te'sya kathayanti-pūjitaṃ nāmādhiṣṭhānam| tataḥ kumbhakārasya sakāśāt suvarṇalakṣeṇāśvājāneyaṃ gṛhītvā ihānītam| tenādya rājño jīvitaṃ dattam| tamāgamya saptāhaṃ danāni dātumārabdhāni, puṇyāni kriyante, akālakaumudī ca prasthāpitā| sārthavāhaḥ saṃlakṣayati-yo mayā chorito nāma, sa eṣa kiśorako'śvājāneyaḥ syāt ? tattāvadgatvā paśyāmi| sa tasya sakāśaṃ gataḥ| sa tenāśvajāneyenoktaḥ-bhoḥ puruṣa, kiṃ tvayā teṣāmaśvānāṃ sakāśāllabdham ? mayaikākinaiva tasya kumbhakārasya suvarṇalakṣaṃ dattam| sa mūrchitakaḥ pṛthivyāṃ nipatitaḥ| jalapariṣekana pratyāgataprāṇaḥ prādayornipatya kṣamāpitavān||
kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo'sau sārthavāhaḥ, eṣa eva jīvakastena kālena tena samayena| yo'śvājāneyaḥ, eṣa eva panthakastena kālena tena samayena| tadāpi yadā asyaiṣa guṇānāmanabhijñaḥ, tadāsyāsatkāraṃ prayuktavān| yadā tu guṇānāmabhijñaḥ, tadā pādayornipatya kṣamāpitavān| etarhyapyeṣa yadā guṇānāmanabhijñaḥ, tadā asatkāraṃ prayuktavān| yadā guṇānāmabhijñaḥ, tadā pādayornipatya kṣamāyati||
iti śrīdivyāvadāne cūḍāpakṣāvadāṇaṃ samāptam||
