evaṃ mayā śrutam | ekasmin samaye bhagavān rājagṛhe viharati sma gṛdhrakūṭe parvate mahatā bhikṣusaṃghena sārdhamardhatrayodaśabhirbhikṣuśataiḥ | tatra bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ -paśya bhadanta, yāvadāyuṣmantau śāriputramaudgalyāyanau tatprathamataraṃ nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau parinirvṛtau, na tveva pitṛmaraṇamāgamitavantau | atredānīṃ bhikṣavaḥ kimāścaryaṃ yadetarhi śāriputramaudgalyāyanau bhikṣū vigatarāgau vigatadveṣau vigatamohau parimuktau jātijarāvyādhimaraṇaśokaparidevaduḥkhadaurmanasyopāyāsaiḥ nistṛṣṇau nirupādānau prahīṇasarvāhaṃkāramamakārāsmimānābhiniveśānuśayau tiṣṭhati buddhapramukhe bhikṣusaṃghe tatprathamataraṃ nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau parinirvṛtau, na tveva pitṛmaraṇamāgamitavantau | yattvatīte'dhvani śāriputramaudgalyāyanau sarāgau sadveṣau samohāvaparimuktau jātijarāvyādhimaraṇaśokaparidevaduḥkhadaurmanasyopāyāsairmamāntike cittamabhiprasādya kālaṃ kṛtvā kāmadhātumatikramya brahmaloka upapannau, na tveva pitṛmaraṇamāgamitavantau, tacchrūyatām ||
bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo'tīte'dhvanyuttarāpathe bhadraśilā nāma nagarī rājadhānī abhūt, ṛddhā ca sphītā ca kṣemā ca subhikṣā ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyā ca | dvādaśayojanānyāyāmena dvādaśayojanāni vistareṇa caturasrā caturdvārā suvibhaktā uccaistoraṇagavākṣavātāyanavedikāpratimaṇḍitā nānāratnasaṃpūrṇā susamṛddhasarvadravyavaṇigjananiketā pārthivāmātyagṛhapatiśreṣṭhirāṣṭrikanīti (?) maulidharāṇāmāvāso vīṇāveṇupaṇavasughoṣakavallarīmṛdaṅgabherīpaṭahaśaṅkhanirnāditā | tasyāṃ ca rājadhānyāmagurugandhāścandanagandhāścūrṇagandhāḥ sarvakālikāśca kusumagandhā nānāvātasamīritā atiramaṇīyā vīthīcatvaraśṛṅgāṭakeṣu vāyavo vāyanti sma | hastyaśvarathapattibalakāyasaṃpannā yugyayānopaśobhitā vistīrṇātiramaṇīyavīthīmahāpathā ucchritavicitradhvajapatākā toraṇagavākṣārdhacandrāvanaddhā amarālaya iva śobhate | utpalapadmakumudapuṇḍarīkāni surabhijalajakusumaparimaṇḍitāni svādusvacchaśītalajalaparipūrṇapuṣkiriṇītaḍāgodapānaprasravaṇopaśobhitā śālatālatamālasūtra (?) karṇikārāśokatilakapuṃnāganāgakeśaracampakabakulātimuktakapāṭalāpuṣpasaṃchannā kalaviṅkaśukaśārikākokilabarhigaṇajīvaṃjīvakonnāditavanaṣaṇḍodyānaparimaṇḍitā | bhadraśilāyāṃ ca rājadhānyāmanyataraṃ maṇigarbhaṃ nāma rājodyānaṃ nānāpuṣpaphalavṛkṣaviṭapopaśobhitaṃ sodapānaṃ haṃsakrauñcamayūraśukaśārikākokilajīvaṃjīvakaśakunimanojñaravanirnāditamatiramaṇīyam | evaṃ suramaṇīyā bhadraśilā rājadhānī babhūva | bhadraśilāyāṃ rājadhānyāṃ rājābhūccandraprabho nāma abhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko divyacakṣuścaturbhāgacakravartī dhārmiko dharmarājā jambudvīpe rājyaiśvaryādhipatyaṃ kāritavān svayaṃprabhuḥ | na khalu rājñaścandraprabhasya gacchato'ndhakāraṃ bhavati, na ca maṇirvā pradīpo vā ulkā vā purastāt nīyate, api tu svakāt kāyāt rājñaścandraprabhasya prabhā niścaranti tadyathā candramaṇḍalādraśmayaḥ | anena kāraṇena rājñaścandraprabhasya candraprabha iti saṃjñā babhūva ||
tena khalu samayenāsmin jambudvīpe'ṣṭaṣaṣṭinagarasahasrāṇi babhūvurbhadraśilārājadhānīpramukhāni ṛddhāni sphītāni kṣemāṇi subhikṣāṇyākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyāṇi | apīdānīṃ jambudvīpakā akarā abhūvan aśulkā atarapaṇyāḥ | kṛṣisaṃpannāḥ saumyā janapadā babhūvuḥ | kukkuṭasaṃpātamātrāśca grāmanigamarāṣṭrarājadhānyo babhūvuḥ | tena khalu samayena catuścatvāriṃśadvarṣasahasrāṇi jambudvīpe manuṣyāṇāmāyuṣaḥ pramāṇamabhūt | rājā candraprabho bodhisattvo'bhūt sarvaṃdadaḥ sarvaparityāgī niḥsaṅgaparityāgī ca | mahati tyāge vartate | tena bhadraśilāyāṃ rājadhānyāṃ nirgatya bahirdhā nagarasya caturṣu nagaradvāreṣu catvāro mahāyajñavāṭā māpitāśchatradhvajayūpapatākātyucchritāḥ | tataḥ suvarṇabherīḥ saṃtāḍya dānāni dīyante, puṇyāni kriyante, tadyathā-annamannārthibhyaḥ, pānaṃ pānārthibhyaḥ, khādyabhojyamālyavilepanavastraśayanāsanāpāśrayāvāsapradīpacchatrāṇi rathā ābharaṇānyalaṃkārāḥ, suvarṇapātryo rūpyacūrṇaparipūrṇāḥ, rūpyapātryaḥ suvarṇaparipūrṇāḥ, suvarṇaśṛṅgāśca gāvaḥ kāmadohinyaḥ | kumārāḥ kumārikāśca sarvālaṃkāravibhūṣitāḥ kṛtvā pradānāni dīyante | vastrāṇi nānāraṅgāni nānādeśasamucchritāni nānāvicitrāṇi, tadyathā-paṭṭāṃśukacīnakauśeyadhautapaṭṭavastrāṇyūrṇādukūlamayaśobhanavastrāṇyaparāntakaphalakaharyaṇikambala-ratnasuvarṇaprāvarakākāśikāṃśukṣomakādyāḥ | rājñā candraprabheṇa tāvantaṃ dānamanudattam, yena sarve jambudvīpakā manuṣyā āḍhyā mahādhanā mahābhogāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ | rājñā candraprabheṇa tāvanti hastyaśvarathacchatrāṇi pradānamanupradattāni, yathā asmin jambudvīpe ekamanuṣyo'pi padbhyāṃ na gacchati | sarve jambudvīpakā manuṣyā hastipṛṣṭhaiśca caturaśvayuktaiśca rathairuparisuvarṇamayai rūpyamayaiścātapatrairūdyānenodyānaṃ grāmeṇa grāmamanuvicaranti sma | tato rājñaścandraprabhasyaitadabhavat-kiṃ punarme itvareṇa dānena pradattena ? yannvahaṃ yādṛśānyeva mama vastrālaṃkārāṇyābharaṇāni, tādṛśānyeva dānamanuprayaccheyam, yat sarve jambudvīpakā manuṣyā rājakrīḍayā krīḍeyuḥ | atha rājā candraprabho jambudvīpakebhyo manuṣyebhyo maulipaṭṭavastrālaṃkārābharaṇāṇyanuprayacchati, tadyathā-harṣakaṭakakeyūrāhārārdhahārādīn pradānamanuprayacchati sma | rājñā candraprabheṇa tāvanti rājārhāṇi vastrāṇyalaṃkārāṇi maulayaḥ paṭṭāścānupradattāḥ, yena sarve jambudvīpakā manuṣyā maulidharāḥ paṭṭadharāśca saṃvṛttāḥ | yā rājñaścandraprabhasyākṛtistādṛśā eva sarve jambudvīpakā manuṣyāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ | tato rājñā candraprabheṇāṣṭaṣaṣṭiṣu nagarasahasreṣu ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kāritam-sarve bhavanto jambudvīpakā manuṣyā rājakrīḍayā krīḍantu, yāvadahaṃ jīvāmīti | atha jambudvīpakā manuṣyā rājñaścandraprabhasya ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇāṃ śrutvā sarva eva rājakrīḍayā krīḍitumārabdhāḥ | vīṇāveṇupaṇavasughoṣakavallarībherīpaṭahamṛdaṅgatālaśaṅkhasahasraistūryaśabdaśataiśca vādyamānaiḥ keyūrahāramaṇimuktābharaṇakuṇḍaladharāḥ sarvālaṃkāravibhūṣitapramadāgaṇaparivṛtā rājaśriyamanubhavanti sma | tena khalu samayena jambudvīpakānāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ rājalīlayā krīḍatāṃ yaśca vīṇāveṇupaṇavasughoṣakavallarībherīmṛdaṅgapaṭahaśabdo yaścāṣṭaṣaṣṭiṣu nagarasahasreṣu tālavaṃśanirghoṣo yaścandraprabhasya caturṣu mahāyajñavāṭeṣu suvarṇabherīṇāṃ tāḍyamānānāṃ varṇamanojñaśabdo niścarati, tena sarvo jambudvīpo manojñaśabdanādito'bhūt tadyathā devānāṃ trāyastriṃśānāmabhyantaraṃ devapuraṃ nṛttagītavāditaśabdena nirnāditam | evameva tasmin kāle tasmin samaye sarvo jambudvīpavāsināṃ janakāyastena gītavāditaśabdena ekāntasukhasamarpito'tyarthaṃ ramate | tena khalu samayena bhadraśilāyāṃ rājadhānyāṃ dvāsaptatirayutakoṭīśatāni manuṣyāṇāṃ prativasanti sma | teṣāṃ rājā candraprabha iṣṭo babhūva priyo manāpaśca | apīdānīṃ varṇākṛtiliṅgasthairyamasya nirīkṣamāṇā na tṛptimupayānti sma | yasmiṃśca samaye rājā candraprabho mahāyajñavāṭaṃ gacchati, tasmin samaye prāṇikoṭīniyutaśatasahasrāṇyavalokayanti, evaṃ cāhuḥ-devagarbho batāyaṃ rājā candraprabha iha jambudvīpe rājyaṃ kārayati | na khalu manuṣyā īdṛgvarṇasaṃsthānā yādṛśā devasya candraprabhasyeti | rājā candraprabho yena yenāvalokayati, tena tena strīsahasrāṇyavalokayanti-dhanyāstāḥ striyo yāsāmeṣa bharteti | tacca śuddhairmanobhirnānyathābhāvāt | evaṃ darśanīyo rājā candraprabho babhūva | candraprabhasya rājño'rdhatrayodaśāmātyasahasrāṇi | teṣāṃ dvau agrāmātyau mahācandro mahīdharaśca | vyaktau paṇḍitau medhāvinau guṇaiśca sarvāmātyamaṇḍalaprativiśiṣṭau sarvādhikṛtau rājaparikarṣakau rājaparipālakau | alpotsuko rājā sarvakarmānteṣu | mahācandraścāgrāmātyo'bhīkṣṇaṃ jambudvīpakān manuṣyān daśasu kuśaleṣu karmapatheṣu niyojayati-imān bhavanto jambudvīpakā manuṣyā daśa kuśalān karmapathān samādāya vartatheti | yādṛśī ca rājñaścakravartino'vavādānuśāsanī, tādṛśī mahācandrasyāmātyasyāvavādānuśāsanī babhūva | mahācandrasyāgrāmātyasya rājā candraprabha iṣṭaścābhūt priyaśca manāpaśca | apīdānīṃ varṇākṛtiliṅgasaṃsthānamasya nirīkṣamāṇo na tṛptimupayāti ||
yāvadapareṇa samayena mahācandreṇāgrāmātyena svapno dṛṣṭaḥ-rājñaścandraprabhasya dhūmavarṇaiḥ piśācairmaulirapanītaḥ | pratibibuddhasya cābhūdbhayam, abhūcchaṅkitatvam, abhūdromaharṣaḥ-mā haiva devasya candraprabhasya śiroyācanaka āgacchet | devaśca sarvaṃdadaḥ | sarvaparityāge nāstyasya kiṃcidaparityaktaṃ dīnānāthakṛpaṇavanīpakayācanakebhya iti | tasya buddhirutpannā-na mayā rājñaścandraprabhasya svapno nivedayitavyaḥ | api tu ratnamayāni śirāṃsi kārayitvā koṣakoṣṭhāgāraṃ praveśya sthāpayitavyāni | yadi nāma kaściddevasya śiroyācanaka āgacchet, tamenamebhī ratnamayaiḥ śirobhiḥ pralobhayiṣyāmi | iti viditvā ratnamayāni śirāṃsi kārayitvā koṣakoṣṭhāgāreṣu prakṣipya sthāpitavān | apareṇa samayena mahīdhareṇāgrāmātyena svapno dṛṣṭaḥ-sarvaratnamayaḥ potaścandraprabhasya kulasthaḥ śataśo viśīrṇaḥ | dṛṣṭvā ca punarbhītastrastaḥ saṃvignaḥ-mā haiva rājñaścandraprabhasya rājyacyutirbhaviṣyati jīvitasya cāntarāya iti | tena brāhmaṇā ye naimittikā vipaścikāścāhūya uktāḥ- bhavantaḥ, mayedṛśaḥ svapno dṛṣṭaḥ, nirdoṣaṃ kuruteti | tatastairbrāhmaṇairnaimittikairvipaścikaiśca samākhyātam-yādṛśo'yaṃ tvayā svapno dṛṣṭaḥ, nacirādeva rājñaścandraprabhasya śiroyācanaka āgamiṣyati | sa cāsyāmeva bhadraśilāyāṃ rājadhānyāmavatariṣyatīti | tato mahīdharo'grāmātyaḥ svapnanirdeśaṃ śrutvā kare kapolaṃ dattvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ-atikṣipraṃ rājñaścandraprabhasya maitrātmakasya kāruṇikasya sattvavatsalasyānityatābalaṃ pratyupasthitamiti | athāpareṇa samayenārdhatrayodaśabhiramātyasahasraiḥ svapno dṛṣṭaḥ-rājñaścandraprabhasya caturṣu yajñavāṭeṣu karoṭapāṇibhiryakṣaiśca chatradhvajapatākāḥ pātitāḥ, suvarṇabheryaśca bhinnāḥ | dṛṣṭvā ca punarbhītāstrastāḥ saṃvignāḥ-mā haiva rājñaścandraprabhasya mahāpṛthivīpālasya maitrātmakasya kāruṇikasya sattvavatsalasyānityatābalamāgacchet, mā haiva asmākaṃ devena sārdhaṃ nānābhāvo bhaviṣyati vinābhāvo viprayogaḥ, mā haiva atrāṇo'paritrāṇo jambudvīpo bhaviṣyatīti | rājñā candraprabheṇa śrutam | tena śrutvā aṣṭaṣaṣṭinagarasahasreṣu ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kāritam-rājalīlayā bhavantaḥ sarve jambudvīpakā mānuṣyāḥ krīḍantu yāvadahaṃ jīvāmi | kiṃ yuṣmākaṃ māyopamaiḥ svapnopamaiścintitaiḥ ? rājñaścandraprabhasya ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ śrutvā sarva eva jambudvīpakā manuṣyā rājalīlayā krīḍitumārabdhāḥ, vīṇāveṇupaṇavasughoṣakavallarībherīmṛdaṅgatālaśaṅkhasahasraistūryaśabdaśataiśca vādyamānaiḥ keyūrahāramaṇimuktābharaṇakuṇḍaladharāḥ sarvālaṃkāravibhūṣitapramadāgaṇaparivṛtā rājaśriyamanubhavanti sma | tena khalu samayena jambudvīpakānāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ rājakrīḍayā krīḍatāṃ yaśca rājñaścandraprabhasya caturṣu mahāyajñavāṭeṣu suvarṇabherīṇāṃ tāḍyamānānāṃ valgurmanojñaḥ śabdo niścarati, tena sarvo jambudvīpo manojñaśabdanirnādito'bhūt | tadyathā devānāṃ trāyastriṃśānāmanyataraṃ devapuraṃ nṛttagītavāditam, evameva tasmin kāle tasmin samaye sarvo jambudvīpanivāsī janakāyastena gītaśabdenaikāntasukhasamarpito'tyarthaṃ ramate ||
tena khalu samayena gandhamādane parvate raudrākṣo nāma brāhmaṇaḥ prativasati sma indrajālavidhijñaḥ | aśrauṣīdraudrākṣo brāhmaṇo bhadraśilāyāṃ rājadhānyāṃ candraprabho nāma rājā sarvaṃdado'smītyātmānaṃ pratijānīte | yannvahaṃ gatvā śiro yāceyamiti | tasyaitadabhavat-yadi tāvat sarvaṃdado bhaviṣyati, mama śiro dāsyati | api tu duṣkarametadasthānamanavakāśo yadevamiṣṭaṃ kāntaṃ priyaṃ manāpamuttamāṅgaṃ parityakṣyati yaduta śīrṣam, nedaṃ sthānaṃ vidyate | iti viditvā gandhamādanāt parvatādavatīrṇaḥ | atha gandhamādananivāsinī devatā vikroṣṭumārabdhā- hā kaṣṭaṃ rājñaścandraprabhasya maitrātmakasya mahākāruṇikasya sattvavatsalasyānityatābalaṃ pratyupasthitamiti | tena khalu samayena sarvajambudvīpa ākulākulaḥ, dhūmāndhakāraḥ, ulkāpātāḥ, diśodāhāḥ, antarīkṣe devadundubhayo'bhinadanti | bhadraśilāyāṃ ca rājadhānyāṃ nātidūre pañcābhijño ṛṣiḥ prativasati viśvāmitro nāmnā pañcaśataparivāro maitrātmakaḥ kāruṇikaḥ sattvavatsalaḥ | atha sa ṛṣiḥ sarvajambudvīpamākulaṃ dṛṣṭvā māṇavakānāmantrayate-yatkhalu māṇavakā jānīta sarvajambudvīpa etarhyākulākulo dhūmāndhakāraḥ | sūryācandramasau evaṃmahānubhāvau na bhāsato na tapato na virocataḥ | nūnaṃ kasyacinmahāpuruṣasya nirodho bhaviṣyati | tathā hi -
rodanti kinnaragaṇā vanadevatāśca
dhikkāramutsṛjanti devagaṇā pi na sthuḥ |
candro na bhāti na vibhāti sahasraraśmi-
rnaiva vādyavāditaravo'pi niśāmyate'tra ||1||
ete hi pādapagaṇāḥ phalapuṣpanaddhā
bhūmau patanti pavanairapi cālitāni |
saṃśrūyate dhvanirayaṃ ca yathātibhīmo
vyakto bhaviṣyati pure vyasanaṃ mahāntam ||2||
ete bhadraśilānivāsaniratāḥ sarve saduḥkhā janā
atyantapratiśokaśalyavihatāḥ praspandakaṇṭhānanāḥ |
etāścandranibhānanā yuvatayo rodanti veśmottame
sarve ca prarudanti tīvrakaruṇāḥ santaḥ śmaśāne yathā ||3||
kiṃ kāraṇaṃ puranivāsijanāḥ samagrāḥ
saṃpiṇḍitaṃ manasi duḥkhamidaṃ vahanti |
utkrośatāmaniśamardhakṛtāgrahastai-
raiśvaryamapratisamaṃ niruṇaddhi vācam ||4||
ete payodā vinadantyatoyā
jalāśrayāḥ śokamamī vrajanti |
bhuvorivāmbhasi ca bālasamīraṇāstā
vātāḥ pravānti ca kharā rajasā vimiśrāḥ ||5||
aśivāni nimittāni pravarāṇi hi sāṃpratam |
kṣemāṃ diśamato'smākamito gantuṃ kṣamo bhavet ||6||
api tu khalu māṇavakā rājñaścandraprabhasya caturṣu mahāyajñavāṭeṣu suvarṇabherīṇāṃ tāḍyamānānāṃ na bhūyo manojñaḥ svaro niścarati | nūnaṃ bata bhadraśilāyāṃ mahānupadravo bhaviṣyatīti ||
atha raudrākṣo brāhmaṇo bhadraśilāyāṃ rājadhānyāmanuprāptaḥ | tato nagaranivāsinī devatā raudrākṣaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ dūrādeva dṛṣṭvā yena rājā candraprabhastenopasaṃkrāntā | upasaṃkramya rājānaṃ candraprabhamidamavocat-yatkhalu deva jānīyāḥ-adya devasya yācanaka āgamiṣyati hiṃsako viheṭhako'vatāraprekṣī avatāragaveṣī | sa devasya śiro yāciṣyatīti | taddevena sattvānāmarthāyātmānaṃ paripālayitavyamiti | atha rājā candraprabhaḥ śiroyācanakamupaśrutya pramuditamanā vismayotphulladṛṣṭirdevatāmuvāca-gaccha devate, yadyāgamiṣyati, ahamasya dīrghakālābhilaṣitaṃ manorathaṃ paripūrayiṣyāmīti | atha sā devatā rājñaścandraprabhasya idamevaṃrūpaṃ vyavasāyaṃ viditvā duḥkhinī durmanaskā vipratisāriṇī tatraivāntarhitā | atha rājñaścandraprabhasyaitadabhavat-kimatrāścaryaṃ yadahamannamannārthibhyo'nuprayacchāmi, pānaṃ pānārthibhyo vastrahiraṇyasuvarṇamaṇimuktādīn tadarthibhyaḥ | yannvahaṃ yācanakebhyaḥ svaśarīramapi parityajeyamiti | tato raudrākṣo brāhmaṇo dakṣiṇena nagaradvāreṇa praviśan devatayā nivāritaḥ- gaccha pāpabrāhmaṇa, mā praviśa | kathamidānīṃ tvaṃ mohapuruṣa rājñaścandraprabhasya maitrātmakasya kāruṇikasya sattvavatsalasyānekaguṇasaṃpannasya jambudvīpaparipālakasyādūṣiṇo'napakāriṇaḥ śiraśchetsyasi ? raudracitta pāpabrāhmaṇa, mā praviśeti | yāvadetat prakaraṇaṃ rājñā candraprabheṇa śrutam-yācanako me nagaradvāre devatayā vidhāryate iti | śrutvā ca punarmahācandramagrāmātyamāmantrayate-yatkhalu mahācandra jānīyāḥ-yācanako me nagaradvāri devatayā vidhāryate | gaccha, śīghraṃ matsakāśamānayeti | evaṃ deveti mahācandro'grāmātyo rājñaścandraprabhasya pratiśrutya nagaradvāraṃ gatvā tāṃ devatāmuvāca-yatkhalu devate jānīyāḥ-praviśatveṣa brāhmaṇaḥ, rājā candraprabha enamāhvāpayata iti | tato nagaranivāsinī devatā mahācandramagrāmātyamidamavocat-yatkhalu mahācandra jānīyāḥ-eṣa brāhmaṇo raudracitto niṣkāruṇiko rājñaścandraprabhasya vināśārthaṃ bhadraśilāmanuprāptaḥ | kimanena durātmanā praveśitena ? eṣa rājānamupasaṃkramya śiro yāciṣyatīti | atha mahācandro'grāmātyo devatāmāha-asti mayā devate upāyaścintito yenāyaṃ brāhmaṇo na prabhaviṣyati devasya śiro grahītumiti | atha mahācandro'grāmātyo raudrākṣaṃ brāhmaṇamādāya nagaraṃ praviśya ratnadharānājñāpayati-ānīyantāṃ bhavanto ratnamayāni śirāṃsi | asmai brāhmaṇāya dāsyāmīti | bhāṇḍāgārikai ratnamayānāṃ śīrṣāṇāṃ rājadvāre rāśiḥ kṛtaḥ | mahācandreṇāgrāmātyena raudrākṣasya ratnamayāni śīrṣāṇyupadarśitāni-pratigṛhṇa tvaṃ mahābrāhmaṇa prabhūtāni ratnamayāni śīrṣāṇi | yāvadāptaṃ ca te hiraṇyasuvarṇamanuprayacchāmi, yena te putrapautrāṇāṃ jīvikā bhaviṣyati | kiṃ te devasya śīrṣeṇa majjāśiṅghāṇakavasādipūrṇeneti ? evamukte raudrākṣo brāhmaṇo mahācandramagrāmātyamidamavocat-na ratnamayairme śirobhiḥ prayojanam | nāpi hiraṇyasuvarṇena | api tvahamasya mahāpṛthivīpālasya sarvaṃdadasya sakāśamāgataḥ śiraso'rthāya | evamukte mahācandramahīdharau agrāmātyau kare kapolaṃ dattvā cintāparau vyavasthitau-kimidānīṃ prāptakālamiti | athaitadvṛttāntamupaśrutya rājā candraprabho mahācandramahīdharau agrāmātyau dūreṇa prakrośyaitadavocat-ānīyatāmeṣa matsamīpam | ahamasyaivaṃ manorathaṃ pūrayiṣyāmīti | evamukte mahācandramahīdharau agrāmātyau sāśrudurdinavadanau karuṇakaruṇaṃ paridevamānau abhirudya devasya maitrātmakasya kāruṇikasya sattvavatsalasyānekaguṇasamuditasya jñānakuśalasya divyacakṣuṣo'nityatābalaṃ pratyupasthitam, adyāsmākaṃ devena sārdhaṃ nānābhāvo bhaviṣyati vinābhāvo viprayogo visaṃyogaḥ | iti viditvā rājñaḥ pādayornipatya ekānte niṣaṇṇau | atha rājā candraprabhaḥ paramatyāgaprativiśiṣṭaṃ tyāgaṃ parityaktukāmo dūrata eva taṃ brāhmaṇamāmantrayate-ehi tvaṃ brāhmaṇa, yacchatāṃ yat prārthayase tadgṛhāṇeti | atha raudrākṣo brāhmaṇo yena rājā candraprabhastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya rājānaṃ candraprabhaṃ jayenāyuṣā ca vardhayitvā rājānaṃ candraprabhamidamavocat-
dharme sthito'si vimale śubhavuddhisattva
sarvajñatāmabhilaṣan hṛdayena sādho |
mahyaṃ śiraḥ sṛja mahākaruṇāgracetā
mahyaṃ dadasva mama toṣakaro bhavādya ||7||
atha rājā candraprabho brāhmaṇasyāntikādidamevaṃrūpaṃ vākpravyāhāraṃ śrutvā pramuditamanāḥ prītivisphāritākṣo raudrākṣaṃ brāhmaṇamuvāca-hantedaṃ brāhmaṇa śiro'vighnataḥ sādhu pragṛhyatāmuttamāṅgamiti | āha ca-
priyo yathā yadyapi caikaputraka-
stathāpi me kharpamidaṃ gṛhāṇa |
tvaccintitānāṃ phalamastu śīghraṃ
śiraḥpradānāddhi labheya bodhim ||8||
ityuktvā svayameva svaśiraso maulimapanītavān | yadā ca rājñā candraprabheṇa śiraso maulirapanītaḥ, tatsamanantarameva sarveṣāṃ jambudvīpakānāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ maulayaḥ śirasaḥ patitāḥ | bhadraśilāyāṃ ca rājadhānyāṃ caturdiśamulkāpātā diśodāhāśca prādurbhūtāḥ | nagaradevatābhiśca śabdo niścāritaḥ-asya rājñaścandraprabhasya pāpabrāhmaṇo śiraśchetsyatīti | tacchrutvā mahācandramahīdharau agrāmātyau rājñaścandraprabhasyedamevaṃrūpaṃ śarīraparityāgaṃ viditvā sāśrudurdidavadanau rājñaścandraprabhasya pādau pariṣvajyāhatuḥ-dhanyāste puruṣā deva ya evamatyadbhutarūpadarśanaṃ vā drakṣyantīti | tau abhimukhamudvīkṣyamāṇau rājani candraprabhe cittamabhiprasādya raudrākṣe ca brāhmaṇe maitryacittamutpādya nāvāṃ śakṣyāmo nirupamaguṇādhārasya devasyānityatāṃ draṣṭumiti tasminneva muhūrte kālagatau | kāmadhātumatikramya brahmalokamupapannau | rājñaścandraprabhasyedamevaṃrūpaṃ vyavasāyaṃ buddhvā tāṃ ca nagaranivāsinīnāṃ devatānāmārtadhvanimupaśrutya bhaumā yakṣā antarikṣacarāśca yakṣāḥ kranditumārabdhāḥ-hā kaṣṭamidānīṃ rājñaścandraprabhasya śarīranikṣepo bhaviṣyatīti ||
atrāntare ca rājakuladvāre'nekāni prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi saṃnipatitānyabhūvan | tato raudrākṣo brāhmaṇastaṃ mahājanakāyamavekṣya candraprabhaṃ rājānamuvāca-yatkhalu deva jānīyāḥ-nāhaṃ śakṣyāmi mahājanakāyasya purastāddevasya śiro grahītum | yadi ca te śiraḥ parityaktam, ekāntaṃ gacchāva iti | evamukte rājā candraprabho raudrākṣaṃ brāhmaṇamavocat-evaṃ mahābrāhmaṇa kriyatām | ṛddhyantāṃ tava saṃkalpāḥ, paripūryantāṃ manorathā iti | atha rājā candraprabho rājā āsanādutthāya tīkṣṇamasimādāya yena maṇiratnagarbhamudyānaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | atha rājñaścandraprabhasya idamevaṃrūpaṃ vyavasāyaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhadraśilāyāṃ rājadhānyāmanekāni prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi vikrośamānāni pṛṣṭhataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ samanubaddhāni | so'drākṣīdrājā candraprabho mahājanasaṃnipātaṃ vikrośantam | dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ samāśvāsayannāha-apramādaḥ karaṇīyaḥ kuśaleṣu dharmeṣviti | saṃkṣepeṇa dharmadeśanāṃ kṛtvā raudrākṣaṃ brāhmaṇamādāya maṇiratnagarbhamudyānaṃ praviṣṭaḥ | samanantarapraviṣṭasya rājñaścandraprabhasya maṇiratnagarbha udyāne bhadraśilāyāṃ chatrāṇi dhvajapatākāśca yena maṇiratnagarbhamudyānaṃ tenāvanāmitāḥ | tato rājā candraprabho maṇiratnagarbhasyodyānasya dvāraṃ pidhāya taṃ raudrākṣaṃ brāhmaṇamāmantrayate-pratigṛhyatāṃ brāhmaṇa mamottamāṅgamiti | evamukte raudrākṣo brāhmaṇo rājānaṃ candraprabhamuvāca-nāhaṃ śakṣyāmi devasya śiraśchettumiti | maṇiratnagarbhasya codyānasya madhye kurabakaḥ | tatra sarvakālikaścampakavṛkṣo jātaḥ | tato rājā candraprabhastīkṣṇamasiṃ gṛhītvā yena sarvakālikaścampakavṛkṣastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | atha yā devatāstasminnudyāne'dhyavasitāḥ, tā rājñaścandraprabhasyedamevaṃrūpaṃ svaśarīraparityāgaṃ viditvā vikroṣṭumārabdhāḥ | evaṃ cāhuḥ-kathamidānīṃ tvaṃ pāpabrāhmaṇa rājñaścandraprabhasyādūṣiṇo'napakāriṇo mahājanavatsalasyānekaguṇasaṃpannasya śiraśchetsyasīti ? tato rājā candraprabha udyānadevatā nivārayati-mā devatā mama śiroyācanakasyāntarāyaṃ kuruta | tatkasya hetoḥ ? bhūtapūrvaṃ devatā mamottamāṅgaṃ yācanakasya devatayā antarāyaḥ kṛtaḥ | tayā devatayā bahu apuṇyaṃ prasūtam | tatkasya hetoḥ ? yadi tayā devatayā antarāyo na kṛto'bhaviṣyat, mayā laghu ladhvevānuttarajñānamadhigatamabhaviṣyat | ataśca tvāmahamevaṃ bravīmi-mā me tvamuttamāṅgayācanakasyāntarāyaṃ kuruṣveti | asminneva te maṇiratnagarbha udyāne mayā sahasraśaḥ śiraḥparityāgaḥ kṛtaḥ, na ca me kenacidantarāyaḥ kṛtaḥ | tasmāt tvaṃ devate mamottamāṅgayācanakasyāntarāyaṃ mā kuru | eṣa eva devate sa pṛṣṭhībhūto maitreyo yo vyāghryā ātmānaṃ parityajya catvāriṃśatkalpasaṃprasthito maitreyo bodhisattva ekena śiraḥparityāgenāvapṛṣṭhīkṛtaḥ | atha sā devatā rājñaścandraprabhasya maharddhitāmavetya tasmin rājani paraṃ prasādaṃ pravedayantī tūṣṇīmavasthitā | atha rājā candraprabhaḥ samyakpraṇidhānaṃ kartumārabdhaḥ-śṛṇvantu bhavantaḥ, ye daśadikṣu sthitā devatāsuragaruḍagandharvakinnarā adhyuṣitāḥ, ihāhamudyāne tyāgaṃ kariṣyāmi, asmin tyāgaṃ svaśiraḥparityāgaṃ yena cāhaṃ satyena svaśiraḥ parityajāmi, na rājyārthāya na svargārthāya na bhogārthāya na śakratvāya na brahmatvāya na cakravartivijayāya nānyatra kathamahamanuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhiomabhisaṃbuddhya adāntān sattvān damayeyam, aśāntān śamayeyam, atīrṇāṃstārayeyam, amuktān mocayeyam, anāśvastānāśvāsayeyam, aparinirvṛtān parinirvāpayeyam | anena satyena satyavacanena saphalaḥ pariśramaḥ syāt, parinirvṛtasya ca sarṣapaphalapramāṇadhātavo bhaveyuḥ, asya ca maṇiratnagarbhasyodyānasya madhye mahān stūpaḥ syāt sarvastūpapratibiśiṣṭaḥ | ye ca sattvāḥ śāntakāyā mahācaityaṃ banditukāmā gaccheyuḥ, te taṃ sarvastūpaprativiśiṣṭaṃ dhātuparaṃ dṛṣṭvā viśrāntā bhaveyuḥ | parinirvṛtasyāpi mama caityeṣu janakāyā āgatya kārāṃ kṛtvā svargamokṣaparāyaṇā bhaveyuriti | evaṃ samyak praṇidhānaṃ kṛtvā tasmiṃścampakavṛkṣe śikhāṃ baddhvā raudrākṣaṃ brāhmaṇamuvāca-āgaccha mahābrāhmaṇa, pratigṛhyatām | mā me vighnaṃ kuruṣveti | tato rājā candraprabha ātmanaḥ kāyasya sthāma ca balaṃ ca saṃjanya tasmiṃśca brāhmaṇe karuṇāsahagataṃ maitracittamutpādya śiraśchittvā raudrākṣāya brāhmaṇāya niryātitavān | kālaṃ ca kṛtvā atikramya brahmalokaṃ praṇītatvācchubhakṛtsne devanikāye upapannaḥ | samanantaraparityakte rājñā candraprabheṇa śirasi ayaṃ trisāhasramahāsāhasro lokadhātuḥ triḥ kampitaḥ saṃkampitaḥ saṃprakampitaḥ, calitaḥ saṃcalitaḥ saṃpracalitaḥ, vyadhitaḥ pravyadhitaḥ saṃpravyadhitaḥ | gaganatalasthāśca devatā divyānyutpalāni kṣeptumārabdhāḥ, padmāni kumudāni puṇḍarīkānyagarucūrṇāni tagaracūrṇāni candanacūrṇāni tamālapatrāṇi divyāni māndāravāṇi puṣpāṇi, divyāni ca vādyāni pravādayitumārabdhāḥ, cailavikṣepāṃśca cākārṣuḥ | tato raudrākṣo brāhmaṇaḥ śirograhāyodyānānnirgataḥ | athāsminnantare'nekaiḥ prāṇiśatasahasrairnādo muktaḥ-hā kaṣṭam | praghātito devaḥ sarvajanamanorathaparipūraka iti | tata ekatyāḥ pṛthivyāmāvartante parivartante, eke bāhubhiḥ prakrośanti, kāścit prakīrṇakeśyo rudanti | anekāni ca prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi saṃnipatitāni | tata ekatyāstasminneva pradeśe sthitvā dhyānānyutpādya tatraiva kālaṃ kṛtvā śubhakṛtsne devanikāye upapannā rājñaścandraprabhasya sabhāgatāyām | apare dhyānānyutpādya tatraiva kālaṃ kṛtvā bhāsvare devanikāye upapannāḥ | apare prathamadhyānamutpādya kālaṃ kṛtvā brahmalokasabhāgatāyāmupapannāḥ | aparaiḥ saṃnipātya rājñaścandraprabhasya śarīraṃ sarvagandhakāṣṭhaiścitāṃ citvā, dhmāpitāni ca asthīni sauvarṇakumbhe prakṣipya, caturmahāpathe śarīrastūpaḥ pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ | chatradhvajapatākāścāropitāḥ | gandhairmālyairdhūpairdīpaiḥ puṣpaiḥ pūjāṃ kṛtvā candraprabhe rājani svacittamabhiprasādya kālagatāḥ ṣaṭsu devanikāyeṣu kāmāvacareṣu deveṣūpapannāḥ | yaiśca tatra kārāḥ kṛtāḥ, sarve te svargamokṣaparāyaṇāḥ saṃvṛttā iti ||
syātkhalu yuṣmākaṃ bhikṣavaḥ kāṅkṣā vā vimatirvā anyā sā tena kālena tena samayenottarāpathe bhadraśilā nāma rājadhānyabhūditi | na khalu evaṃ draṣṭavyam | tatkasya hetoḥ? eṣaiva sā takṣaśilā tena kālena tena samayena bhadraśilā nāma rājadhānī babhūva | syātkhalu yuṣmākaṃ bhikṣavaḥ kāṅkṣā vā vimatirvā anyaḥ sa tena kālena tena samayena candraprabho nāma rājābhūditi | na khalu evaṃ draṣṭavyam | tatkasya hetoḥ ? ahameva tena kālena tena samayena rājā candraprabho babhūva | syātkhalu yuṣmākaṃ bhikṣavaḥ kāṅkṣā vā vimatirvā-anyaḥ sa tena kālena tena samayena raudrākṣo nāma brāhmaṇo'bhūditi | na khalvevaṃ draṣṭavyam | tatkasya hetoḥ ? eṣa eva sa tena kālena tena samayena devadatto babhūva | syātkhalu yuṣmākaṃ bhikṣavaḥ kāṅkṣā vā vimatirvā -anyau tau tena kālena tena samayena mahācandramahīdharau agrāmātyau babhūvaturiti | na khalvevaṃ draṣṭavyam | tatkasya hetoḥ ? etāveva mahācandramahīdharau agrāmātyau śāriputramaudgalyāyanau babhūvatuḥ | tadāpyetau tatprathamataḥ kālagatau, na tveva pitṛmaraṇamārāgitavantau iti ||
