atha bhagavān kośaleṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ caran śrāvastīmanuprāptaḥ | śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | aśrauṣīdanāthapiṇḍado gṛhapatiḥ-bhagavān kośaleṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ caran śrāvastīmanuprāptaḥ | śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasyārāma iti | śrutvā ca punaryena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ | ekāntaniṣaṇṇamanāthapiṇḍadaṃ gṛhapatiṃ bhagavān dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati | anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm | anāthapiṇḍado gṛhapatiḥ utthāyāsanādekāṃsamuttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena bhagavāṃstenāñjaliṃ praṇamya bhagavantamidamavocat - adhivāsayatu me bhagavān śvo'ntargṛhe bhaktena sārdhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghena iti | adhivāsayati bhagavānanāthapiṇḍadasya gṛhapatestūṣṇībhāvena | anāthapiṇḍado gṛhapatirbhagavatastūṣṇībhāvenādhivāsanāṃ viditvā bhagavato bhāṣitamabhinandyānumodya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato'ntikāt prakrānto yena svaniveśanaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya dauvārikaṃ puruṣamāmantrayate - na tāvadbhoḥ puruṣa tīrthyānāṃ praveśo dātavyo yāvad buddhapramukhena bhikṣusaṃghena bhuktaṃ bhavati | tataḥ paścādahaṃ tīrthyānāṃ dāsyāmīti | evamāryeti dauvārikaḥ puruṣo'nāthapiṇḍadasya gṛhapateḥ pratyaśrauṣīt | anāthapiṇḍado gṛhapatistāmeva rātriṃ śuci praṇītaṃ khādanīyabhojanīyaṃ samudānīya kālyamevotthāya āsanāni prajñapya udakamaṇīn pratiṣṭhāpya bhagavato dūtena kālamārocayati- samayo bhadanta, sajjaṃ bhaktaṃ yasyedānīṃ bhagavān kālaṃ manyata iti | atha bhagavān pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya bhikṣugaṇaparivṛto bhikṣusaṃghapuraskṛto yena anāthapiṇḍadasya gṛhapaterbhaktābhisārastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya purastādbhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ | atha anāthapiṇḍado gṛhapatiḥ sukhopaniṣaṇṇaṃ buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ viditvā śucinā praṇītena khādanīyabhojanīyena svahastaṃ saṃtarpayati saṃpravārayati | anekaparyāyeṇa śucinā praṇītena khādanīyabhojanīyena svahastaṃ saṃtarpya saṃpravārya bhagavantaṃ bhuktavantaṃ viditvā dhautahastamapanītapātraṃ nīcataramāsanaṃ gṛhītvā bhagavataḥ purastānniṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya ||
athāyuṣmān mahākāśyapo'nyatamasmādāraṇyakācchayanāsanāt dīrghakeśaśmaśrurlūhacīvaro jetavanaṃ gataḥ | sa paśyati jetavanaṃ śūnyam | tenopadhivārikaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ- kutra buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃgha iti | tena samākhyātam - anāthapiṇḍadena gṛhapatinopanimantrita iti | sa saṃlakṣayatigacchāmi, tatraiva piṇḍapātaṃ paribhokṣyāmi, buddhapramukhaṃ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ paryupāsiṣyāmīti | so'nāthapiṇḍadasya gṛhapaterniveśanaṃ gataḥ | ato dauvārikena uktaḥ - ārya tiṣṭha, mā pravekṣyasi | kasyārthāya ? anāthapiṇḍadena gṛhapatinā ājñā dattā - mā tāvat tīrthyānāṃ praveśaṃ dāsyasi, yāvadbuddhapramukhena bhikṣusaṃghena bhuktam | tataḥ paścāt tīrthyānāṃ dāsyāmi iti | athāyuṣmān mahākāśyapaḥ saṃlakṣayati - tasya me lābhāḥ sulabdhāḥ, yanmāṃ śrāddhā brāhmaṇagṛhapatayaḥ śramaṇaśākyaputrīya iti na jānante | gacchāmi, kṛpaṇajanasyānugrahaṃ karomīti viditvā udyānaṃ gataḥ | sa saṃlakṣayati- adya mayā kasyānugrahaḥ kartavya iti | yāvadanyatamā nagarāvalambikā kuṣṭhābhidrutā sarujārtā pakkagātrā bhikṣāmaṭati | sa tasyāḥ sakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ | tasyāśca bhikṣāyāmāyāsaḥ saṃpannaḥ | tayā āyuṣmān mahākāśyapo dṛṣṭaḥ kāyaprāsādikaścittaprāsādikaḥ śāntena īryāpathena | sā saṃlakṣayati - nūnaṃ mayā evaṃvidhe dakṣiṇīye kārā na kṛtā, yena me iyamevaṃrūpā samavasthā | yadi āryo mahākāśyapo mamāntikādanukampāmupādāya ācāmaṃ pratigṛhṇīyāt, ahamasmai dadyāmiti | tata āyuṣmatā mahākāśyapena tasyāścetasā cittamājñāya pātramupanāmitam- yadi te bhagini parityaktam, dīyatāmasmin pātra iti | tatastayā cittamabhiprasādya tasmin pātre dattam | makṣikā ca patitā | sā tāmapanetumārabdhā | tasyāstasminnācāme'ṅguliḥ patitā | saṃlakṣayati - kiṃ cāpyāryeṇa mama cittānurakṣayā na cchoritaḥ, api tu na paribhokṣyatīti | athāyuṣmatā mahākāśyapena tasyāścetasā cittamājñāya tasyā eva pratyakṣamanyatamaṃ kuḍyamūlaṃ niśritya paribhuktam | sā saṃlakṣayati - kiṃ cāpi āryeṇa mama cittānurakṣayā paribhuktam, nānenāhāreṇāhārakṛtyaṃ kariṣyati iti | athāyuṣmān mahākāśyapastasyāścittamājñāya tāṃ nagarāvalambikāmidamavocat-bhagini prāmodyamutpādayasi, ahaṃ tvadīyenāhāreṇa rātriṃdivasamatināmayiṣyāmi iti | tasyā atīva audbilyamutpannam - mamāryeṇa mahākāśyapena piṇḍapātaḥ pratigṛhīta iti | tata āyuṣmatī mahākāśyape cittamabhiprasādya kālaṃ gatā tuṣite devanikāye upapannā | sā śakreṇa devendreṇa dṛṣṭā ācāmaṃ pratipādayantī cittamabhiprasādayantī kālaṃ ca kurvāṇā | no tu dṛṣṭvā kutropapannā iti | sa narakān vyavalokayitumārabdho na paśyati, tiryak ca pretaṃ ca manuṣyāṃścāturmahārājikān devāṃstrāyastriṃśān yāvanna paśyati | tathā hyadhastāddevānāṃ jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate no tūpariṣṭāt | atha śakro devānāmindro yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramya gāthābhigītena praśnaṃ papraccha-
carataḥ piṇḍapātaṃ hi kāśyapasya mahātmanaḥ|
kutrāsau modate nārī kāśyapācāmadāyikā ||1||
bhagavānāha -
tuṣitā nāma te devāḥ sarvakāmasamṛddhayaḥ |
yatrāsau modate nārī kāśyapācāmadāyikā ||2|| iti ||
atha śakrasya devānāmindrasyaitadabhavat - ime ca tāvanmanuṣyāḥ puṇyāpuṇyānāmapratyakṣadarśino dānāni dadati, puṇyāni kurvanti | ahaṃ pratyakṣadarśanena puṇyānāṃ svapuṇyaphale vyavasthitaḥ kasmāt dānāni na dadāmi, puṇyāni vā na karomi ? ayamāryo mahākāśyapo dīnānāthakṛpaṇavanīpakānukampī | yannvahamenaṃ piṇḍakena pratipādayeyam | iti viditvā kṛpaṇavīthyāṃ gṛhaṃ nirmitavān | avacīravicīrakaṃ kākābhilīnakaṃ nātiparamarūpaṃ kuvindaṃ cātmānamabhinimārya udūḍhaśiraskaḥ saṇaśāṭikānivāsitaḥ sphaṭitapāṇipādo vastraṃ vāyitumārabdhaḥ | śacī api devakanyā kuvindanaryā veśadhāriṇī tasarikāṃ kartumārabdhā | pārśve cāsyā divyā sudhā sajjīkṛtā tiṣṭhati | athāyuṣmān mahākāśyapaḥ kṛpaṇānāthavanīpakajanānukampako'nupūrveṇa tadgṛhamanuprāptaḥ | duḥkhitako'yamiti kṛtvā dvāre sthitena pātraṃ prasāritam | śakreṇa devānāmindreṇa divyayā sudhayā pūritam | athāyuṣmato mahākāśyapasyaitadabhavat -
divyaṃ cāsya sudhābhaktamayaṃ ca gṛhavistaraḥ |
suviruddhamiti kṛtvā jāto me hṛdi saṃśayaḥ ||3|| iti ||
dharmatā hyeṣā- asamanvāhṛtya arhatāṃ jñānadarśanaṃ na pravartate | sa samanvāhartuṃ pravṛttaḥ | yāvat paśyati śakraṃ devendram | sa kathayati- kauśika, kiṃ duḥkhitajanasyāntarāyaṃ karoṣi, yasya te bhagavatā dīrgharātrānugato vicikitsākathaṃkathāśalyaḥ samūla ārūḍho yathāpi tattathāgatenārhatā samyaksaṃbuddhena | ārya mahākāśyapa kiṃ duḥkhitajanasyāntarāyaṃ karomi ? ime tāvat manuṣyāḥ puṇyānāmapratyakṣadarśino dānāni dadati puṇyāni kurvanti| ahaṃ pratyakṣadarśī eva puṇyānāṃ kathaṃ dānāni na dadāmi ? nanu coktaṃ bhagavatā-
karaṇīyāni puṇyāni duḥkhā hyakṛtapuṇyatā |
kṛtapuṇyāni modante asmiṃlloke paratra ca ||4||
tataḥprabhṛti āyuṣmān mahākāśyapaḥ samanvāhṛtya kulāni piṇḍapātaṃ praveṣṭumārabdhaḥ | atha śakro devendra ākāśasthaścāyuṣmato mahākāśyapasya piṇḍapātaṃ carato divyayā sudhayā pātraṃ pūrayati | āyuṣmānapi mahākāśyapaḥ pātramadhomukhaṃ karoti | annapānaṃ choryate | etat prakaraṇaṃ bhikṣavo bhagavata ārocayanti | bhagavānāha - tasmādanujānāmi piṇḍopadhānaṃ dhārayitavyamiti |
sāmantakena śabdo visṛtaḥ-amukayā nagarāvalambikayā āryo mahākāśyapa ācāmena pratipāditaḥ, sā ca tuṣite devanikāye upapannā iti | rājñā prasenajitā kauśalena śrutam-amukayā nagarāvalambikayā āryo mahākāśyapa ācāmena pratipāditaḥ | sā tuṣite deve upapannā iti | śrutvā ca punaryena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ | ekāntaniṣaṇṇaṃ rājānaṃ prasenajitaṃ kauśalaṃ bhagavān dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati, anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm | atha rājā prasenajit kauśala utthāyāsanādekāṃsamuttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena bhagavāṃstenāñjaliṃ praṇamya bhagavantamidamavocat- adhivāsayatu me bhagavānāryamahākāśyapamuddiśya bhaktaṃ saptāhena iti | adhivāsayati bhagavān rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kauśalasya tūṣṇībhāvena | atha rājā prasenajit kauśalo bhagavatastūṣṇībhāvenādhivāsānāṃ viditvā bhagavato'ntikāt prakrāntaḥ | atha rājā prasenajit kauśalastāmeva rātriṃ śuci praṇītaṃ khādanīyaṃ bhojanīyaṃ samudānīya kālyamevotthāya āsanāni prajñāpya udakamaṇīn pratiṣṭhāpya bhagavato dūtena kālamārocayati-samayo bhadanta, sajjaṃ bhaktaṃ yasyedānīṃ bhagavān kālaṃ manyata iti | atha bhagavān pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya bhikṣugaṇaparivṛto bhikṣusaṃghapuraskṛto yena rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kauśalasya bhaktābhisārastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramya purastādbhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ | atha rājā prasenajit kauśalaḥ sukhopaniṣaṇṇaṃ buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ viditvā śucinā praṇītena khādanīyabhojanīyena svahastaṃ saṃtarpayati saṃpravārayati | anyatamaśca kroḍamallako vṛddhānte cittamabhiprasādayaṃstiṣṭhati-ayaṃ rājā pratyakṣadarśīṃ eva puṇyānāṃ sve puṇyaphale pratiṣṭhāpito'tṛpta eva puṇyairdānāni dadāti,puṇyāni karoti | atha rājā prasenajit kauśalo'nekaparyāyeṇa buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ śucinā praṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena svahastaṃ saṃtarpya saṃpravārya bhagavantaṃ bhuktavantaṃ viditvā dhautahastamapanītapātraṃ nīcataramāsanaṃ gṛhītvā bhagavataḥ purastāt niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tato bhagavatā abhihitaḥ - mahārāja, kasya nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādiśāmi ? kiṃ tava, āhosvidyena tavāntikāt prabhūtataraṃ puṇyaṃ prasūtamiti ? rājā saṃlakṣayati- mama bhagavān piṇḍapātaṃ paribhuṅkte | ko'nyo mamāntikāt prabhūtataraṃ puṇyaṃ prasaviṣyatīti viditvā kathayati-bhagavan yena mamāntikāt prabhūtataraṃ puṇyaṃ prasūtaṃ tasya bhagavān nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādiśatu iti | tato bhagavatā kroḍamallakasya nāmnā dakṣiṇā ādiṣṭā | evaṃ yāvat ṣaḍdivasān | tato'nyadivase rājā kare kapolaṃ dattvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ - mama bhagavān piṇḍapātaṃ paribhuṅkte, kroḍamallakasya nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādiśati iti | so'mātyairdṛṣṭaḥ | te kathayanti- kimarthaṃ kare kapolaṃ dattvā cintāparo vyavasthita iti ? rājā kathayati- bhavantaḥ, kathaṃ na cintāparastiṣṭhāmi, yatredānīṃ sa bhagavān mama piṇḍapātaṃ paribhuṅkte, kroḍamallakasya nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādiśatīti ? tatraiko vṛddho'mātyaḥ kathayati-alpotsuko bhavatu | vayaṃ tathā kariṣyāmo yathā śvo bhagavān devasyaiva nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādiśatīti | taiḥ pauruṣeyāṇāmājñā dattā yataḥ śvo bhavadbhiḥ praṇīta āhāraḥ sajjīkartavyaḥ prabhūtaścaiva samudānayitavyo yathopārdhaṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ pātre patati upārdhaṃ bhūmau iti | amātyairaparasmin divase prabhūta āhāraḥ sajjīkṛtaḥ praṇītaśca | tataḥ sukhopaniṣaṇṇaṃ buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ pariveṣitumārabdhāḥ | upārdhaṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ pātre patati, upārdhaṃ bhūmau | tataḥ kroḍamallakāḥ pradhāvitāḥ-bhūmau nipatitaṃ gṛhṇīma iti | te pariveṣakairnivāritāḥ | tataḥ kroḍamallakaḥ kathayati- yadyasya rājñaḥ prabhūtamannam, svāpateyamasti, santyanye'pi asmadvidhā duḥkhitakā ākāṅkṣante | kimarthaṃ na dīyate ? kimanenāparibhogaṃ choritena iti | tasya kroḍamallakasya cittavikṣepo jātaḥ - na śakyaṃ tena tathā cittaṃ prasādayituṃ yathā pūrvam | tato rājā buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojayitvā na mama nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādiśatīti viditvā dakṣiṇāmaśrutvaiva praviṣṭaḥ | tato bhagavatā rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kauśalasya nāmnā dakṣiṇā ādiṣṭā-
hastyaśvarathapattiyāyino bhuñjānasya puraṃ sanairgamam |
paśyasi (?) phalaṃ hi rūkṣikāyā alavaṇikāyāḥ kulmāṣapiṇḍikāyāḥ ||5||
athāyuṣmānānando bhagavantamidamavocat-bahuśo bahuśo bhadanta bhagavatā rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kauśalasya niveśane bhuktvā nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādiṣṭā | nābhijānāmi kadācidevaṃrūpāṃ dakṣiṇāmādiṣṭapūrvām | bhagavānāha- icchasi tvamānanda rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kauśalasyālavaṇikāṃ kulmāṣapiṇḍikāmārabhya karmaplotiṃ śrotum ? etasya bhagavan kālaḥ, etasya sugata samayaḥ | ayaṃ bhagavān rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kauśalasyālavaṇikāṃ kulmāṣapiṇḍikāmārabhya karmaplotiṃ varṇayet, bhagavataḥ śrutvā bhikṣavo dhārayiṣyanti iti | tatra bhagavān bhikṣūnāmantrayate sma -
bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo'nyatamasmin karpaṭake gṛhapatiḥ prativasati | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatramānītam | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ putro jātaḥ | sa unnīto varghitaḥ paṭuḥ saṃvṛttaḥ | yāvadasau gṛhapatiḥ patnīmāmantrayate- bhadre, jāto'smākamṛṇahārako dhanahārakaśca | gacchāmi paṇyamādāya deśāntaramiti | sā kathayati-āryaputra, etat kuruṣva iti | sa paṇyamādāya deśāntaraṃ gataḥ | tatraivānayena vyasanamāpannaḥ | alpaparicchado'sau gṛhapatiḥ | tasya gṛhapaterdhanajātaṃ parikṣīṇam | so'sya putro duḥkhito jātaḥ | tasya gṛhapatervayasyakaḥ | tena tasya dārakasya mātā abhihitā-ayaṃ tava putraḥ kṣetraṃ rakṣatu, ahamasya sukhaṃ bhaktena yogodvahanaṃ kariṣyāmi | evaṃ bhavatu | sa tasya kṣetraṃ rakṣitumārabdhaḥ | sa tasya sukhaṃ bhaktakena yogodvahanaṃ kartumārabdhaḥ | yāvadapareṇa samayena parvaṇī pratyupasthitā | tasya dārakasya mātā saṃlakṣayati-adya gṛhapatipatnī suhṛtsaṃbandhibāndhavāḥ saha śramaṇabrāhmaṇabhojanena vyagrā bhaviṣyati | gacchāmi sānukālaṃ tasya dārakasya bhaktaṃ nayāmi iti | sā sānukālaṃ gatvā gṛhapatipatnyā etamarthaṃ nivedayati | sā rūṣitā kathayati- na tāvacchramaṇabrāhmaṇebhyo dadāmi jñātīnāṃ vā, tāvat preṣyamanuṣyāya dadāmi ? adya tāvat tiṣṭhatu, śvo dviguṇaṃ dāsyāmīti | tatastasya dārakasya mātā saṃlakṣayati- mā me putro bubhukṣitakaḥ sthāsyatīti | tayā ātmano'rthe'lavaṇikā kulmāṣapiṇḍikā saṃpāditā | sā tāmādāya gatā | tena dārakeṇa dūrata eva dṛṣṭā | sa kathayati- amba, asti kiṃcinmṛṣṭaṃ mṛṣṭam ? sā kathayati- putra, yadeva prātidaivasikaṃ tadapyadya nāsti | mayā ātmano'rthe'lavaṇikā kulmāṣapiṇḍikā sādhitā | tāmahaṃ gṛhītvā āgatā | etāṃ paribhuṅkṣveti | sa kathayati - sthāpayitvā gacchasveti | sā sthāpayitvā prakrāntā ||
asati buddhānāmutpāde pratyekabuddhā loka utpadyante hīnadīnānukampakāḥ prāntaśayanāsanabhaktā ekadakṣiṇīyā lokasya | yāvadanyatamaḥ pratyekabuddhastatpradeśamanuprāptaḥ | sa tena dṛṣṭaḥ kāyaprāsādikaścitraprāsādikaśca śānteryāpathavartī | sa saṃlakṣayati- nūnaṃ mayā evaṃvidhe sadbhūte dakṣiṇīye kārā na kṛtā, yena me īdṛśī samavasthā | yadyayaṃ mamāntikādalavaṇikāṃ kulmāṣapiṇḍikāṃ pratigṛhṇīyāt, ahamasmai dadyāmiti| tato'sau pratyekabuddhastasya daridrapuruṣasya cetasā cittamājñāya pātraṃ prasāritavān-bhadramukha, sacette parityaktam, dīyatāmasmin pātra iti | tatastena tīvreṇa prasādena sā alavaṇikā kulmāṣapiṇḍikā tasmai pratyekabuddhāya pratipāditā ||
kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo'sau daridrapuruṣaḥ, eṣa evāsau rājā prasenajit kauśalastena kālena tena samayena| yadanena pratyekabuddhāyālavaṇikā kulmāṣapiṇḍikā pratipāditā, tena karmaṇā ṣaṭkṛtvo deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣu rājyaiśvaryādhipatyaṃ kāritavān, ṣaṭkṛtvo'syāmeva śrāvastyāṃ rājā kṣatriyo mūrdhnābhiṣiktaḥ, tenaiva ca karmaṇā avaśeṣeṇa etarhi rājā kṣatriyo mūrdhnābhiṣiktaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ | so'sya piṇḍako vipakkaḥ | tamahaṃ saṃdhāya kathayāmi-
hastyaśvarathapattiyāyino bhuñjānasya puraṃ sanairgamanam |
paśyasi phalaṃ hi rūkṣikāyā alavaṇikāyā kulmāṣapiṇḍakāyāḥ || iti ||
sāmantakena śabdo visṛtaḥ-bhagavatā rājñaḥ prasenajito'lavaṇikāṃ kulmāṣapiṇḍikāmārabhya karmalpotirvyākṛtā iti | rājñāpi prasenajitā śrutam | sa yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ | ekāntaniṣaṇṇaṃ rājānaṃ prasenajitaṃ kauśalaṃ bhagavān dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati | anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm | atha rājā prasenajit kauśala utthāyāsanādekāṃsamuttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā bhagavantamidamavocat -adhivāsayatu me bhagavān traimāsīṃ cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkāraiḥ sārdhaṃ saṃgheneti | adhivāsayati bhagavān rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kauśalasya tūṣṇībhāvena | tato rājñā prasenajitā kauśalena buddhapramukhāya bhikṣusaṃghāya traimāsyaṃ śatarasaṃ bhojanaṃ dattam | ekaikaśca bhikṣuḥ śatasahasreṇa vastreṇācchāditaḥ | tailasya ca kumbhakoṭiṃ samudānīya dīpamālā abhyudyato dātum | tatra bhakte pūjāyāṃ ca mahān kolāhalo jātaḥ | yāvadanyatamā nagarāvalambikā atīva duḥkhitā | tayā kroḍamallakena bhikṣāmaṭantyā uccaśabdaḥ śrutaḥ | śrutvā ca punaḥ pṛcchatibhavantaḥ, kimeṣa uccaśabdo mahāśabda iti | aparaiḥ samākhyātam-rājñā prasenajitā kauśalena buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃghastraimāsyaṃ bhojitaḥ, ekaikaśca bhikṣuḥ śatasahasreṇa vastreṇa ācchāditaḥ, tailasya kumbhakoṭiṃ ca samudānīya dīpamālā abhyudyato dātumiti | tatastasyā nagarāvalambikāyā etadabhavat- ayaṃ tāvadrājā prasenajit kauśalaḥ puṇyairatṛpto'dyāpi dānāni dadāti, puṇyāni karoti | yannvahamapi kutaścit samudānīya bhagavataḥ pradīpaṃ dadyāmiti | tayā khaṇḍamallake tailasya stokaṃ yācayitvā pradīpaṃ prajvālya bhagavataścaṅkrame dattaḥ | pādayornipatya praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam- anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena yathāyaṃ bhagavān śākyamunirvarṣaśatāyuṣi prajāyāṃ śākyamunirnāma śāstā loka utpannaḥ, evamahamapi varṣaśatāyuṣi prajāyāṃ śākyamunireva śāstā bhaveyam | yathā cāsya śāriputramaudgalyāyanāgrayugaṃ bhadrayugamānando bhikṣurupasthāyakaḥ, śuddhodanaḥ pitā, mātā mahāmāyā, rāhulabhadraḥ kumāraḥ putraḥ | yathāyaṃ bhagavān dhātuvibhāgaṃ kṛtvā parinirvāsyati, evamahamapi dhātuvibhāgaṃ kṛtvā parinirvāpayeyamiti | yāvat sarve te dīpā nairvāṇāḥ| sa tayā prajvalitaḥ pradīpaḥ prajvalatyeva | dharmatā khalu buddhānāṃ bhagavatām-na tāvadupasthāyakāḥ pratisaṃlīyante na yāvadbuddhā bhagavantaḥ pratisaṃlīnā iti | athāyuṣmānānandaḥ saṃlakṣayati-asthānamanavakāśo yadbuddhā bhagavanta āloke śayyāṃ kalpayanti | yannvahaṃ dīpaṃ nirvāpayeyamiti | sa hastena nirvāpayitumārabdho na śaknoti | tataścīvarakarṇikena, tato vyajanena, tathāpi na śaknoti nirvāpayitum | tatra bhagavānāyuṣmantamānandamāmantrayate-kimetadānandeti | sa kathayati-bhagavan, mama buddhirutpannā-asthānamanavakāśo yadbuddhā bhagavanta āloke śayyāṃ kalpayanti | yannvahaṃ dīpaṃ nirvāpayeyamiti | so'haṃ hastena nirvāpayitumārabdho na śaknomi, tataścīvarakarṇikena, tato vyajanena, tathāpi na śaknomīti | bhagavānāha- khedamānanda āpatsyase | yadi vairambhakā api vāyavo vāyeyuḥ, te'pi na śaknuyurnirvāpayituṃ prāgeva hastagataścīvarakarṇiko vyajanaṃ vā | tathā hi - aya pradīpastayā dārikayā mahatā cittābhisaṃskāreṇa prajvalitaḥ | api tu ānanda bhaviṣyatyasau dārikā varṣaśatāyuṣi prajāyāṃ śākyamunirnāma tathāgato'rhan samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ | śāriputramaudgalyāyanau tasyāgrayugaṃ bhadrayugam, ānando bhikṣurūpāsakaḥ, śuddhodanaḥ pitā, mahāmāyā mātā, kapilavastu nagaram, rāhulabhadraḥ kumāraḥ putraḥ | sāpi dhātuvibhāgaṃ kṛtvā parinirvāsyatīti ||
idamavocadbhagavān | āttamanasaste ca bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitamabhyanandan ||
