buddho bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | asmāt parāntake vāsavagrāme balaseno nāma gṛhapatiḥ prativasati āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatramānītam | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | so'putraḥ putrābhinandī śivavaruṇakuberaśakrabrahmādīnāyācate ārāmadevatāṃ vanadevatāṃ śṛṅgāṭakadevatāṃ balipratigrāhikāṃ devatām | sahajāṃ sahadharmikāṃ nityānubaddhāmapi devatāmāyācate | asti caiṣa loke pravādo yadāyācanahetoḥ putrā jāyante duhitaraśceti | tacca naivam | yadyevamabhaviṣyat, ekaikasya putrasahasramabhaviṣyat tadyathā rājñaścakravartinaḥ | api tu trayāṇāṃ sthānānāṃ saṃmukhībhāvāt putrā jāyante duhitaraśca | katameṣāṃ trayāṇām ? mātāpitarau raktau bhavataḥ saṃnipatitau, mātā kalyā bhavati ṛtumatī, gandharvaḥ pratyupasthito bhavati | eṣāṃ trayāṇāṃ sthānānāṃ saṃmukhībhāvāt putrā jāyante duhitaraśca | sa caivamāyācanaparastiṣṭhati ||
anyatamaśca sattvaścaramabhavikaśca hitaiṣī gṛhītamokṣamārgāntonmukho na nirvāṇe bahirmukhaḥ saṃsārādanarthikaḥ sarvabhavagativyupapattiparāṅmukho'ntimadehadhārī anyatamāt sattvanikāyāccyutvā tasya prajāpatyāḥ kukṣimavakrāntaḥ | pañcāveṇikā dharmā ekatye paṇḍitajātīye mātṛgrāme | katame pañca ? raktaṃ puruṣaṃ jānāti, viraktaṃ jānāti | kālaṃ jānāti, ṛutuṃ jānāti | garbhamavakrāntaṃ jānāti | yasya sakāśād garbhamavakrāmati taṃ jānāti | dārakaṃ jānāti dārikāṃ jānāti | saceddārako bhavati, dakṣiṇaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati | saceddārikā bhavati, vāmaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati | sā āttamanāttamanāḥ svāmina ārocayati-diṣṭayā āryaputra vardhasva | āpannasattvāsmi saṃvṛttā | yathā ca me dakṣiṇaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati, niyataṃ dārako bhaviṣyati | so'pi āttamanāttamanā udānaṃ udānayati-apyevāhaṃ cirakālābhilaṣitaṃ putramukhaṃ paśyeyam | jāto me syānnāvajātaḥ | kṛtyāni me kurvīta | bhṛtaḥ pratibibhṛyāt | dāyādyaṃ pratipadyeta | kulavaṃśo me cirasthitiko bhaviṣyati | asmākaṃ cāpyatītakālagatānāmalpaṃ vā prabhūtaṃ vā dānāni dattvā puṇyāni kṛtvā dakṣiṇāmādeśayiṣyati- idaṃ tayoryatratatropapannayorgacchatoranugacchatviti | āpannasattvāṃ ca tāṃ viditvā upariprāsādatalagatāmayantritāṃ dhārayati śīte śītopakaraṇairuṣṇa uṣṇopakaraṇairvaidyaprajñaptairāhārairnātitiktairnātyamlairnātilavaṇairnātimadhurairnātikaṭukairnātikaṣāyaistiktā-mlalavaṇamadhurakaṭukaṣāyavivarjitairāhauraḥ, hārārdhahāravibhūṣitagātrīṃ apsarasamiva nandanavanavicāriṇīṃ mañcānmañcaṃ pīṭhātpīṭhama(na)vatarantīmupa(madha?)rimāṃ bhūmim | na cāsyā amanojñaśabdaśravaṇaṃ yāvadeva garbhasya paripākāya | sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānāmatyayāt prasūtā | dārako jātaḥ | abhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko gauraḥ kanakavarṇaśchatrākāraśirāḥ pralambabāhurvistīrṇaviśālalalāṭaḥ saṃgatabhrūruttuṅganāso ratnapratyuptikayā karṇikayā āmuktayālaṃkṛtaḥ | balasenena gṛhapatinā ratnaparīkṣakā āhūyoktāḥ | bhavantaḥ, ratnānāṃ mūlyaṃ kuruta iti | na śakyate ratnānāṃ mūlyaṃ kartumiti | dharmatā yasya na śakyate mūlyaṃ kartuṃ tasya koṭimūlyaṃ kriyate | te kathayanti-gṛhapate, asya ratnasya koṭirmūlyamiti | tasya jñātayaḥ saṃgamya samāgamya trīṇi saptakāni ekaviṃśatidivasāni vistareṇa jātasya jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpayanti- kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti | ayaṃ dārakaḥ koṭimūlyayā ratnapratyuptikayā āmuktayā jātaḥ, śravaṇeṣu ca nakṣatreṣu | bhavatu dārakasya śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇa iti nāma | yasminneva divase śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo jātaḥ, tasminneva divase balasenasya gṛhapaterdvau preṣyadārakau jātau | tenaikasya dāsaka iti nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitam, aparasya pālaka iti | śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo'ṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo'nupradatto dvābhyāmaṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṣīradhātrībhyām | so'ṣṭābhirdhātrībhirunnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpimaṇḍenānyaiścottaptottaptairupakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ | āśu vardhate hradasthamiva paṅkajam ||
sa yadā mahān saṃvṛttastadā lipyāṃ upanyastaḥ, saṃkhyāyāṃ gaṇanāyāṃ mudrāyāmuddhāre nyāse nikṣepe vastuparīkṣāyāṃ ratnaparīkṣāyām | so'ṣṭāsu parīkṣāsūddhaṭako vācakaḥ paṇḍitaḥ paṭupracāraḥ saṃvṛttaḥ | tasya pitrā trīṇi vāsagṛhāṇi māpitāni haimantikaṃ graiṣmikaṃ vārṣikam | trīṇi udyānāni māpitāni haimantikaṃ graiṣmikaṃ vārṣikam | trīṇi antaḥpurāṇi pratyupasthāpitāni jyeṣṭhakaṃ madhyamaṃ kanīyasam | sa upariprāsādatalagato niṣpuruṣeṇa tūryeṇa krīḍati ramate paricārayati | balaseno gṛhapatirnityameva kṛṣikarmānte udyuktaḥ | sa koṭikarṇastaṃ pitaraṃ paśyati nityaṃ kṛṣikarmānte udyuktam | sa kathayati- tāta, kasyārthe tvaṃ nityameva kṛṣikarmānte udyuktaḥ ? sa kathayati-putra, yathā tvamupariprāsādatalagato niṣpuruṣeṇa tūryeṇa krīḍasi ramasi paricārayasi, yadyahamapi evameva krīḍeyaṃ rameyaṃ paricārayeyam, nacirādevāsmākaṃ bhogāstanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādāyaṃ gaccheyuḥ | sa saṃlakṣayati- mamaivārthaṃ codanā kriyate | sa kathayati-tāta yadyevam, gacchāmi, mahāsamudramavatarāmi | pitā kathayati- putra tāvantaṃ me ratnajātamasti | yadi tvaṃ tilataṇḍulakolakulatthanyāyena ratnāni paribhokṣyase, tathāpi me ratnānāṃ parikṣayo na syāt | sa kathayati- tāta anujānīhi mām, paṇyamādāya mahāsamudramavatarāmīti | balasenena tasyāvaśyaṃ nirbandhaṃ jñātvānujñātaḥ | balasenena gṛhapatinā vāsavagrāmake ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kṛtam-yo yuṣmākamutsahate śroṇena koṭikarṇena sārthavāhena sārdhamaśuklenātarapaṇyena mahāsamudramavatartum, sa mahāsamudragamanīyaṃ paṇyaṃ samudānayatu | pañcabhirvaṇikśatairmahāsamudragamanīyaṃ paṇyaṃ samudānītam | balaseno nāma gṛhapatiḥ saṃlakṣayatikīdṛśena yānena śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo yāsyati? sa saṃlakṣayati-saced hastibhiḥ, hastinaḥ sukumārā durbharāśca, aśvā api sukumārā durbharāśca, gardabhāḥ smṛtimantaḥ sukumārāśca | gardabhayānena gacchatviti | sa pitrā āhūyoktaḥ- putra na tvayā sārthasya purastād gantavyam, nāpi pṛṣṭhataḥ | yadi balavāṃścauro bhavati, sārthasya purastānnipatati | durbalo bhavati, pṛṣṭhato nipatati | tvayā sārthasya madhye gantavyam | na ca te sārthavāhe hate sārtho vaktavyaḥ | dāsakapālakāvapi uktau-putrau, yuvābhyāṃ na kenacit prakāreṇa śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo moktavya iti ||
athāpareṇa samayena śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇaḥ kṛtakautukamaṅgalasvastyayano mātuḥ sakāśamupasaṃkramya pādayornipatya kathayati-amba gacchāmi, avalokitā bhava, mahāsamudramavatarāmi | sā ruditumārabdhā | sa kathayati-amba kasmād rodasi | mātā sāśrudurdinavadanā kathayati-putra, kadācidahaṃ putrakaṃ punarapi jīvantaṃ drakṣyāmīti | sa saṃlakṣayati- ahaṃ maṅgalaiḥ saṃprasthitaḥ | iyamīdṛśamamaṅgalamabhidhatte | sa ruṣitaḥ kathayati-amba, ahaṃ kṛtakautūhalamaṅgalasvastyayano mahāsamudraṃ saṃprasthitaḥ | tvaṃ cedṛśānyamaṅgalāni karoṣi | apāyān kiṃ na paśyasīti | sā kathayati-putra, kharaṃ te vākkarma niścāritam | atyayamatyayato deśaya | apyevaitat karma tanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gacchet | sā tenātyayamatyayato kṣamāpitā | atha śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇaḥ kṛtakautūhalamaṅgalasvastyayanaḥ śakaṭairbhārairmoṭaiḥ piṭakairuṣṭrairgobhirgardabhaiḥ prabhūtaṃ samudragamanīyaṃ paṇyamāropya mahāsamudraṃ saṃprasthitaḥ | so'nupūrveṇa grāmanagaranigamapallipattaneṣu cañcūryamāṇo mahāsamudrataṭamanuprāptaḥ | nipuṇataḥ sāmudraṃ yānapātraṃ pratipādya mahāsamudramavatīrṇo dhanahārakaḥ | so'nuguṇena vāyunā ratnadvīpamanuprāptaḥ | tena tatropaparīkṣyopaparīkṣya ratnānāṃ tad vahanaṃ pūritam tadyathā tilataṇḍulakolakulatthānām | so'nuguṇena vāyunā saṃsiddhayānapātro jambudvīpamanuprāptaḥ | sa sārthastasminneva samudratīre āvāsitaḥ | asau śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo'pi sārthavāho dāsakapālakāvādāya sārthamadhyādekānte'pakramya āyaṃ vyayaṃ ca tulayitumārabdhaḥ | paścāt tenāsau dāsako'bhihitaḥ- dāsaka, paśya sārthaḥ kiṃ karotīti | sa gataḥ | yāvat paśyati sthorāṃ lardayantaṃ sārtham | so'pi sthorāṃ lardayitumārabdhaḥ | dāsakaḥ saṃlakṣayati- pālakaḥ sārthavāhaṃ śabdāpayiṣyati | pālako'pi saṃlakṣayati- dāsakaḥ sārthavāhaṃ śabdāpayiṣyatīti | sa sārthaḥ sarātrimeva sthorāṃ lardayitvā saṃprasthitaḥ | so'pi gāḍhanidrāvaṣṭabdhaḥ śayitaḥ | sa sārthastāvad gato yāvatprabhātam | te kathayanti-bhavantaḥ, kka sārthavāhaḥ? purastād gacchati | purastād gatvā pṛcchanti-kka sārthavāhaḥ? pṛṣṭhata āgacchati| pṛṣṭhato gatvā pṛcchanti-kka sārthavāhaḥ? madhye gacchati | madhye gatvā pṛcchanti | yāvat tatrāpi nāsti | dāsakaḥ kathayati-mama buddhirutpannā-pālakaḥ sārthavāhaṃ śabdāpayiṣyati | pālako'pi kathayati-mama buddhirutpannā-dāsakaḥ sārthavāhaṃ śabdāpayiṣyati | bhavantaḥ, na śobhanaṃ kṛtaṃ yadasmābhiḥ sārthavāhaśchoritaḥ | āgacchata, nivartāmaḥ | te kathayanti-bhavantaḥ, yadi vayaṃ nivartiṣyāmaḥ, sarva evānayena vyasanamāpatsyāmaḥ | āgacchata, kriyākāraṃ tāvat kurmaḥ-tāvanna kenacicchroṇasya koṭikarṇasya mātāpitṛbhyāmārocayitavyaṃ yāvad bhāṇḍaṃ pratiśāmitaṃ bhavati | te kriyākāraṃ kṛtvā gatāḥ | śroṇasya koṭikarṇasya mātāpitṛbhyāṃ śrutam-śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo'bhyāgata iti | tau pratyudgatau | kka sārthavāhaḥ ? madhye āgacchati | madhye gatvā pṛcchataḥ- kka sārthavāha iti | te kathayanti-pṛṣṭhata āgacchati | pṛṣṭhato gatvā pṛcchataḥ-kka sārthavāhaḥ? purastād gacchatīti | taistāvadākulīkṛtau yāvad bhāṇḍaṃ pratiśāmitam | paścāt te kathayanti-amba vismṛto'smābhiḥ sārthavāha iti | tābhyāmeka āgatya kathayati- ayaṃ śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo'bhyāgata iti | tasya tāvabhisāraṃ dattvā pratyadgatau na paśyataḥ | apara āgatya kathayati- amba, diṣṭyā vardhasva, ayaṃ śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo'bhyāgata iti | tasya tāvabhisāraṃ dattvā pratyudgatau na paśyataḥ | tau na kasyacit punarapi śraddadhātumārabdhau | tābhyāmudyāneṣu svakasabhādevakuleṣu chatrāṇi vyajanāni kalaśāni upānahāni cākṣarāṇi abhilikhitāni dattāni sthāpitāni- yadi tāvacchroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo jīvati, laghu āgamaya, kṣipramāgamaya | atha cyutaḥ kālagataḥ, tasyaiva gatyupapattisthānāt sthānāntaraviśeṣatāyai | tau śokena rudantāvandhībhūtau ||
śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇaḥ sārthavāho'pi sūryāṃśubhiḥ spṛṣṭa ātāpitaḥ prativibuddho yāvat sārthaṃ na paśyati nānyatra gardabhayānameva | sa taṃ gardabhayānamabhiruhya saṃprasthitaḥ | rātrau ca vātena pravāyatā vālukayā mārgo vyapoḍhaḥ pithitaḥ | te ca gardabhāḥ smṛtimanto gandhamāghrāyāghrāya śanairmandamandaṃ saṃprasthitāḥ | sārthavāhaḥ saṃlakṣayati-kasmādete śanairmandamandaṃ gacchantīti kṛtvā pratodayaṣṭyā tāḍitāḥ | te saṃbhrāntā ākulībhūtāḥ smṛtibhraṣṭā unmārgeṇa saṃprasthitāḥ, yāvadanyatamāśāṭavīṃ praviṣṭāḥ | te tṛṣārtā vihvalavadanā jihvāṃ nirnāmayya gacchanti | tān dṛṣṭvā tasya kāruṇyamutpannam | sa saṃlakṣayati-yadi etān notsrakṣyāmi, anayena vyasanamāpatsye | ko'sau nirghṛṇahṛdayastyaktaparalokaśca ya eṣāṃ pratodayaṣṭiṃ kāye nipātayiṣyati ? tena ta utsṛṣṭāḥ-adyāgreṇa acchinnāgrāṇi tṛṇāni bhakṣayata anavamarditāni, pānīyāni pibata anāvilāni, caturdiśaṃ ca śītalā vāyavo vāntviti | sa tānutsṛjya padbhyāṃ saṃprasthitaḥ | yāvat paśyati āyasaṃ nagaramuccaṃ ca pragṛhītaṃ ca | tatra dvāre puruṣastiṣṭhati kālo raudraścaṇḍo lohitākṣa udviddhapiṇḍo lohalaguḍavyagrahastaḥ | sa tasya sakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya taṃ puruṣaṃ pṛcchati-asti atra bhoḥ puruṣa pānīyamiti | sa tūṣṇīṃ vyavasthitaḥ | bhūyastena pṛṣṭaḥ-astyatra nagare pānīyamiti | bhūyo'pi sa tūṣṇīṃ vyavasthitaḥ | tena sārthavāhena tatra praviśya pānīyaṃ pānīyam iti śabdo niścāritaḥ | yāvat pañcamātraiḥ pretasahasrairdagdhasthūṇāsadṛśairasthiyantravaducchritaiḥ svakeśaromapraticchannaiḥ parvatodarasaṃnibhaiḥ sūcīchidropamamukhairanuparivāritaḥ śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇaḥ | te kathayanti-sārthavāha kāruṇikastvam | asmākaṃ tṛṣārtānāṃ pānīyamanuprayaccha | sa kathayati-bhavantaḥ, ahamapi pānīyameva mṛgayāmi | kuto'haṃ yuṣmākaṃ pānīyamanuprayacchāmīti ? te kathayanti-sārthavāha, pretanagaramidam, kuto'tra pānīyam ? adyāsmābhirdvādaśabhirvarṣaistvatsakāśātpānīyaṃ pānīyamiti śabdaḥ śrutaḥ | sa kathayati- ke yūyaṃ bhavantaḥ, kena vā karmaṇā ihopapannāḥ ? śroṇa duṣkuhakā jāmbūdvīpakā manuṣyāḥ | nābhiśraddadhāsyasi | ahaṃ bhavantaḥ pratyakṣadarśī, kasmānnābhiśraddadhāsye ? te gāthāṃ bhāṣante-
ākrośakā roṣakā vayaṃ matsariṇaḥ kuṭukuñcakā vayam |
dānaṃ ca na dattamaṇvapi yena vayaṃ pitṛlokamāgatāḥ ||1||
śroṇa gaccha, puṇyamaheśākhyastvam | asti kaścit tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ pretanagaraṃ praviṣṭaḥ svastikṣemābhyāṃ nirgacchan ? sa saṃprasthitaḥ yāvat tenāsau puruṣo dṛṣṭaḥ | tenoktaḥ-bhadramukha, aho bata tvayā mamārocitaṃ syāt yathedaṃ pretanagaramiti, nāhamatra praviṣṭaḥ syām | sa tenoktaḥ-śroṇa gaccha, puṇyamaheśākhyastvam, yena tvaṃ pretanagaraṃ praviśya svastikṣemābhyāṃ nirgataḥ | sa saṃprasthitaḥ | yāvadaparaṃ paśyati āyasaṃ nagaramuccaṃ ca pragṛhītaṃ ca | tatrāpi dvāre puruṣastiṣṭhati kālaścaṇḍo lohitākṣa udviddhapiṇḍo lohalaguḍavyagrahastaḥ | sa tasya sakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramyaivamāha-bhoḥ puruṣa, asti atra nagare pānīyam ? sa tūṣṇīṃ vyavasthitaḥ | bhūyastena pṛṣṭaḥ- bhoḥ puruṣaḥ, asti atra nagare pānīyam ? sa tūṣṇīṃ vyavasthitaḥ | tena tatra praviśya pānīyaṃ pānīyam iti śabdaḥ kṛtaḥ | anekaiḥ pretasahasrairdagdhasthūṇākṛtibhirasthiyantravaducchritaiḥ svakeśaromapraticchannaiḥ parvatodarasaṃnibhaiḥ sūcīchidropamamukhairanuparivāritaḥ | śroṇa kāruṇikastvam | asmākaṃ tṛṣārtānāṃ pānīyamanuprayaccha | sa kathayati-ahamapi bhavantaḥ pānīyameva mṛgayāmi | kuto'haṃ yuṣmākaṃ pānīyaṃ dadāmīti ? te kathayanti- śroṇa, pretanagaramidam | kuto'tra pānīyam ? adyāsmābhirdvādaśabhirvarṣaistvatsakāśāt pānīyaṃ pānīyamiti śabdaḥ śrutaḥ | sa cāha-ke yūyaṃ bhavantaḥ, kena vā karmaṇā ihopapannāḥ ? ta ūcuḥ-śroṇa, duṣkuhakā jāmbudvīpakā manuṣyāḥ | nābhiśraddadhāsyasi | sa cāha-ahaṃ bhavantaḥ pratyakṣadarśī | kasmānnābhiśraddadhāsye ? te gāthāṃ bhāṣante -
ārogyamadena mattakā ye dhanabhogamadena mattakāḥ |
dānaṃ ca na dattamaṇvapi yena vayaṃ pitṛlokamāgatāḥ ||2||
śroṇa gaccha, puṇyakarmā tvam | asti kaścit tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ śrutaḥ sa pretanagaraṃ praviśya svastikṣemābhyāṃ jīvannirgacchan ? sa saṃprasthitaḥ | yāvat tenāsau puruṣo dṛṣṭaḥ | sa tenoktaḥ-bhadramukha, aho bata yadi tvayā mamārocitaṃ syād yathedaṃ pretanagaramiti, naivāhamatra praviṣṭaḥ syām | sa kathayati-śroṇa gaccha, puṇyamaheśākhyastvam | asti kaścit tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ śruto vā pretanagaraṃ praviśya svastikṣemābhyāṃ jīvan nirgacchan ? sa saṃprasthitaḥ | yāvat paśyati sūryasyāstagamanakāle vimānam, catasro'psarasaḥ abhirūpāḥ prāsādikā darśanīyāḥ | ekaḥ puruṣo'bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ aṅgadakuṇḍalavicitramālyābharaṇānulepanastābhiḥ sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | sa tairdūrata eva dṛṣṭaḥ | te taṃ pratyavabhāṣitumārabdhāḥ | svāgataṃ śroṇa, māsi tṛṣito bubhukṣito vā ? sa saṃlakṣayati-nūnaṃ devo'yaṃ vā nāgo vā yakṣo vā bhaviṣyati | āha ca-ārya tṛṣito'smi, bubhukṣito'smi | sa taiḥ snāpito bhojitaḥ | sa tasmin vimāne tāvat sthito yāvat sūryasyābhyudgamanakālasamayaḥ | sa tenoktaḥ- śroṇa avatarasva, ādīnavo'tra bhaviṣyati | so'vatīrya ekānte vyavasthitaḥ | tataḥ paścāt sūryasyābhyudgamanakālasamaye tadvimānamantarhitam| tā api apsaraso'ntarhitāśca| catvāraḥ śyāmaśabalāḥ kurkurāḥ prādurbhūtāḥ | taistaṃ puruṣamavamūrdhakaṃ pātayitvā tāvat pṛṣṭhavaṃśānutpāṭyotpāṭya bhakṣito yāvat sūryasyāstagamanakālasamayaḥ | tataḥ paścāt punarapi tadvimānaṃ prādurbhūtam, tā apsarasaḥ prādurbhūtāḥ | sa ca puruṣastābhiḥ sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | sa teṣāṃ sakāśamupasaṃkramya kathayati- ke yūyam, kena ca karmaṇā ihopapannāḥ ? te procuḥ -śroṇa duṣkuhakā jāmbūdvīpakā manuṣyāḥ | nābhiśraddadhāsyasi | sa cāha- ahaṃ pratyakṣadarśī, kathaṃ nābhiśraddadhāsye ? śroṇa, ahaṃ vāsavagrāmake aurabhraka āsīt | urabhrān praghātya praghātya māṃsaṃ vikrīya jīvikāṃ kalpayāmi | āryaśca mahākātyāyano mamānukampayā āgatya kathayati- bhadramukha, aniṣṭo'sya karmaṇaḥ phalavipākaḥ | virama tvamasmāt pāpakādasaddharmāt | nāhaṃ tasya vacanena viramāmi | bhūyo bhūyaḥ sa māṃ vicchandayati-bhadramukha, aniṣṭo'sya karmaṇo phalavipākaḥ | virama tvamasmāt pāpakādasaddharmāt | tathāpi ahaṃ na prativiramāmi | sa māṃ pṛcchati-bhadramukha, kiṃ tvametānurabhrān divā praghātayasi āhosvidū rātrau? mayoktaḥ- ārya divā, praghātayāmīti| sa kathayati-bhadramukha, rātrau śīlasamādānaṃ kiṃ na gṛhṇāsi | mayā tasyāntikād rātrau śīlasamādānaṃ gṛhītam | yattad rātrau śīlasamādānaṃ gṛhītam, tasya karmaṇo vipākena rātrāvevaṃvidhaṃ divyaṃ sukhaṃ pratyanubhavāmi | yanmayā divā urabhrāḥ praghātitāḥ, tasya karmaṇo vipākena divā evaṃvidhaṃ duḥkhaṃ pratyanubhavāmi | gāthāṃ ca bhāṣate-
divasaṃ paraprāṇapīḍako rātrau śīlaguṇaiḥ samanvitaḥ |
tasyaitatkarmaṇaḥ phalaṃ hyanubhavāmi kalyāṇapāpakam ||3||
śroṇa, gamiṣyasi tvaṃ vāsavagrāmakam ? gamiṣyāmi | tatra mama putraḥ prativasati | sa urabhrān praghātya praghātya jīvikāṃ kalpayati | sa tvayā vaktavyaḥ-dṛṣṭasye mayā pitā | kathayati-aniṣṭo'sya karmaṇaḥ phalavipākaḥ | viramāsmāt pāpakādasaddharmāt | bhoḥ puruṣa, tvamevaṃ kathayasi-duṣkuhakā jāmbudvīpakā manuṣyā iti | nābhiśraddadhāsyati | śroṇa, yadi na śraddadhāsyati, vaktavyastava pitā kathayati-asti sūnādhastāt suvarṇasya kalaśaḥ pūrayitvā sthāpitaḥ | tamuddhṛtyātmānaṃ samyaksukhena prīṇaya | āryaṃ ca mahākātyāyanaṃ kālena kālaṃ piṇḍakena pratipādaya, asmākaṃ ca nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādeśaya | apyevaitat karma tanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gacchet | sa saṃprasthitaḥ | yāvat sūryasyābhyudgamanakālasamaye paśyati aparaṃ vimānam | tatra ekā apsarā abhirūpā darśanīyā prāsādikā, ekaśca puruṣa abhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ aṅgadakuṇḍalavicitramālyābharaṇānulepanastayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | sa taṃ dūrata eva dṛṣṭvā pratyavabhāṣitumārabdhaḥ | svāgataṃ śroṇa, mā tṛṣito'si, mā bubhukṣito'si vā? sa saṃlakṣayati-nūnamayaṃ devo vā nāgo vā yakṣo vā bhaviṣyati | sa kathayati- tṛṣito'smi bubhukṣitaśca | sa tena snāpito bhojitaḥ | sa tasmin vimāne tāvat sthitaḥ yāvat sūryasyāstaṃgamanakālasamayaḥ | sa tenoktaḥ- avatarasva, ādīnavo'tra bhaviṣyati | sa dṛṣṭādīnavo'vatīrya ekānte'vasthitaḥ | tataḥ paścāt sūryasyāstagamanakālasamaye tadvimānamantarhitam | sāpi apsarā antarhitā | mahatī śatapadī prādurbhūtā | tayā tasya puruṣasya kāyena kāyaṃ saptakṛtvo veṣṭayitvā tāvaduparimastiṣkaṃ bhakṣayantī sthitā, yāvat sa eva sūryasyābhyudgamanakālasamayaḥ | tataḥ paścāt punarapi tadvimānaṃ prādurbhūtam | sāpi apsarāḥ prādurbhūtā | sa ca puruṣo'bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikastayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | sa tamupasaṃkramya pṛcchati-ko bhavān, kena karmaṇā ihopapannaḥ ? sa evamāha-śroṇa, duṣkuhakā jāmbūdvīpakā manuṣyāḥ, nābhiśraddadhāsyasi | sa kathayati-ahaṃ pratyakṣadarśī, kasmānnābhiśraddadhāsye? sa kathayati-yadi evam, ahaṃ vāsavagrāmake brāhmaṇa āsīt pāradārikaḥ | āryaśca mahākātyāyano mamānukampayā āgatya kathayati- bhadramukha, aniṣṭo'sya karmaṇaḥ phalavipākaḥ | virama tvamasmāt pāpakādasaddharmāt | tasya vacanādahaṃ na prativiramāmi | bhūyo bhūyaḥ sa māṃ vicchandayati | tathaivāhaṃ tasmāt pāpakādasaddharmānna prativiramāmi | sa māṃ pṛcchati-bhadramukha, paradārān kiṃ tvaṃ divā gacchasi, āhosvid rātrau? sa mayābhihitaḥ- ārya rātrau | sa kathayati - bhadramukha, divā kiṃ na śīlasamādānaṃ gṛhṇāsi ? mayā tasyāntike divā śīlasamādānaṃ gṛhītam | yattanmayā āryasya kātyāyanasyāntikād divā śīlasamādānaṃ gṛhītam, tasya karmaṇo vipākena divā evaṃvidhaṃ divyasukhaṃ pratyanubhavāmi | yattadrātrau paradārābhigamanaṃ kṛtam, tasya karmaṇo vipākena rātrāvevaṃvidhaṃ duḥkhaṃ pratyanubhavāmi | gāthāṃ ca bhāṣate-
rātrau paradāramūrcchito divasaṃ śīlaguṇaiḥ samanvitaḥ |
tasyaitat karmaṇaḥ phalaṃ hyanubhavāmi kalyāṇapāpakam ||4||

śroṇa yanna śraddadhāsyati, vaktavyaḥ-tava pitrā agniṣṭomasyādhastāt suvarṇakalaśaḥ pūrayitvā sthāpitaḥ | tamuddhṛtyātmānaṃ samyaksukhena prīṇaya | āryaṃ ca mahākātyāyanaṃ kālena kālaṃ piṇḍakena pratipādaya | asmākaṃ ca nāmnā dakṣiṇāṃ deśaya | apyevaitat karma tanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gacchet | sa saṃprasthitaḥ | yāvat paśyati vimānam | tatraikā strī abhirūpā darśanīyā prāsādikā aṅgadakuṇḍalavicitramālyābharaṇānulepanā | tasyāścaturṣu paryaṅkapādakeṣu catvāraḥ pretā baddhāstiṣṭhanti | sā taṃ dūrata eva dṛṣṭvā pratyavabhāṣitumārabdhā- śroṇa, svāgatam | mā tṛṣito'si mā bubhukṣito'si vā ? sa saṃlakṣayati-nūnaṃ devīyaṃ vā nāgī vā yakṣī vā bhaviṣyati | sa kathayati-ārye, tṛṣito'smi bubhukṣito'smi | tayāsāvudvartitaḥ snāpita āhāro dattaḥ | uktaṃ ca - śroṇa, yadi ete kiṃcinmṛgayanti, mā dāsyasīti uktvā teṣāṃ sattvānāṃ karmasvakaṭāṃ pratyakṣīkartukāmā vimānaṃ praviśyāvasthitā | te mṛgayitumārabdhāḥ-śroṇa kāruṇikastvam | bubhukṣitā vayam | asmākamanuprayaccha | tenaikasya kṣiptam-busaplāvī prādurbhūtā | aparasya kṣiptam- ayoguḍaṃ bhakṣayitumārabdhaḥ | aparasya kṣiptam-svamāṃsaṃ bhakṣayitumārabdhaḥ -aparasya kṣiptam-pūyaśoṇitaṃ prādurbhūtam | sā visragandhena nirgatā | śroṇa nivāritastvaṃ mayā | kasmāt tvayaiṣāṃ dattam ? kiṃ mama kāruṇikayā ? tvameva kāruṇikataraḥ | sa kathayati-bhagini, tavaite ke bhavanti ? sā kathayati- ayaṃ me svāmī, ayaṃ me putraḥ, iyaṃ me snuṣā, iyaṃ me dāsī | sa āha-ke yūyam,kena vā karmaṇā ihopapannāḥ ? tayoktam- śroṇa, duṣkuhakā jāmbudvīpakā manuṣyā iti nābhiśraddadhāsyasi | ahaṃ pratyakṣadarśī kasmānnābhiśraddadhāsye ? sā kathayati-ahaṃ vāsavagrāmake brāhmaṇī āsīt | mayā nakṣatrarātryāṃ pratyupasthitāyāṃ praṇītamāhāraṃ sajjīkṛtam | āryamahākātyāyano mamānukampayā vāsavagrāmake piṇḍāya prāvikṣat | sa mayā dṛṣṭaḥ kāyaprāsādikaścittaprāsādikaḥ | cittamabhiprasannaṃ dṛṣṭvā sa mayā prasādajātayā piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ | tasyā mama buddhirutpannā-svāminamanumodayāmi, prāmodyamutpādayiṣyatīti | sa snātvā āgataḥ | mayoktam-āryaputra, anumodasva, mayāryo mahākātyāyanaḥ piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ | sa ruṣito yāvad brāhmaṇānāṃ na dīyate, jñātīnāṃ vā jñātipūjā na kriyate, tāvattvayā tasmai muṇḍakāya śramaṇakāyāgrapiṇḍakaṃ dattam ? so'marṣajātaḥ kathayati-kasmāt sa muṇḍakaḥ śramaṇako busaplāvīṃ na bhakṣayatīti ? tasya karmaṇo vipākenāyaṃ busaplāvīṃ bhakṣayati | mama buddhirutpannā-putramapi anumodayāmi, prāmodyamutpādayiṣyatīti | so'pi mayoktaḥ-putra, anumodasva, mayāryo mahākātyāyanaḥ piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ | so'pi ruṣito yāvad brāhmaṇānāṃ na dīyate, jñātīnāṃ vā jñātipūjā na kriyate, tāvattvayā tasmai muṇḍakāya śramaṇakāyāgrapiṇḍaṃ dattam ? so'pi amarṣajātaḥ kathayati-kasmāt sa muṇḍakaḥ śramaṇako'yoguḍaṃ na bhakṣayatīti ? tasya karmaṇo vipākenāyamayoguḍaṃ bhakṣayati | nakṣatrarātryāṃ pratyupasthitāyāṃ mama jñātayaḥ praheṇakāni preṣayanti | tāni ahaṃ snuṣāyāḥ samarpayāmi | sā praṇītāni praheṇakāni bhakṣayitvā mama lūhāni upanāmayati | ahaṃ teṣāṃ jñātīnāṃ saṃdiśāmi- kiṃ nu yūyaṃ durbhikṣe yathā lūhāni praheṇakāni preṣayata ? te mama saṃdiśanti-na vayaṃ lūhāni preṣayāmaḥ, api tu praṇītānyeva praheṇakāni preṣayāmaḥ | mayā snuṣābhihitā- vadhūke, mā tvaṃ praṇītāni praheṇakāni bhakṣayitvāsmākaṃ lūhāni upanāmayasi ? sā kathayati - kiṃ svamāṃsaṃ na bhakṣayati yā tvadīyāni praheṇakāni bhakṣayatīti? iyaṃ tasya karmaṇo vipākena svamāṃsāni bhakṣayati | nakṣatrarātryāṃ pratyupasthitāyāṃ praṇītāni praheṇakāni dattvā jñātīnāṃ preṣayāmi | sā dārikā tāni praṇītāni praheṇakāni mārge'ntarbhakṣayitvā teṣāṃ lūhāni upanāmayati | te mama saṃdiśanti- kiṃ nu tvaṃ durbhikṣe yathā lūhāni asmākaṃ praheṇakāni preṣayasi ? ahaṃ teṣāṃ saṃdiśāmi-nāhaṃ lūhāni preṣayāmi, api tu praṇītānyevāhaṃ preṣayāmīti | mayā dārikābhihitā-dārike, mā tvaṃ praṇītāni praheṇakāni bhakṣayitvā teṣāṃ lūhāni upanāmayasi | sā kathayati-kiṃ nu pūyaśoṇitaṃ na bhakṣayati, yā tvadīyāni praheṇakāni bhakṣayatīti ? tasya karmaṇo vipākeneyaṃ pūyaśoṇitaṃ bhakṣayati | mama buddhirutpannā-tatra pratisaṃdhiṃ gṛhṇīyāṃ yatraitān sarvān svakaṃ svakaṃ karmaphalaṃ paribhuñjānān paśyeyamiti | yayā mayāryamahākātyāyanaṃ piṇḍakena pratipādya praṇīte trāyastriṃśe devanikāye upapattavyam, sāhaṃ mithyāpraṇidhānavaśāt pretamaharddhikā saṃvṛttā | śroṇa, gamiṣyasi tvaṃ vāsavagrāmakam ? tatra mama duhitā veśyaṃ vāhayati | sā tvayā vaktavyā-dṛṣṭāste mayā pitā mātā bhrātā bhrāturjāyā dāsī | te kathayanti-aniṣṭo'sya karmaṇaḥ phalavipākaḥ | viramāsmādasaddharmāt | bhagini, tvameva kathayasi-duṣkuhakā jāmbudvīpakā manuṣyāḥ, nābhiśraddadhāsyanti | śroṇa, yadi na śraddadhāsyati, vaktavyā- tava paurāṇe paitṛke vāsagṛhe catvāro lohasaṃghāṭāḥ suvarṇasya pūrṇāstiṣṭhanti, madhye ca sauvarṇadaṇḍakamaṇḍaluḥ | te kathayanti-tamuddhṛtyātmānaṃ samyaksukhena prīṇaya, āryaṃ ca mahākātyāyanaṃ kālena kālaṃ piṇḍakena pratipādaya, asmākaṃ ca nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādeśaya | apyevaitat karma tanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gacchet | tena tasyāḥ pratijñātam | evaṃ tasya paribhramato dvādaśa varṣā atikrāntāḥ ||
tayoktaḥ-śroṇa, gamiṣyasi tvaṃ vāsavagrāmakam ? bhagini, gamiṣyāmi | sa tasminneva vimāne uṣitaḥ | tayā teṣāmeva pretānāmājñā dattā-bhavanto gacchata, śroṇaṃ koṭikarṇaṃ suptameva vāsavagrāmake paitṛke udyāne sthāpayitvā āgacchata | sa tairvāsavagrāmake paitṛke udyāne sthāpitaḥ | sa prativibuddho yāvat paśyati ghaṇṭāchatrāṇi vyajanāni, akṣarāṇi likhitāni- yadi tāvacchroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo jīvati, laghvāgamanāya, kṣipramāgamanāya, cyutaḥ kālagato gatyupapattisthānāt sthānāntaraviśeṣatāyai | sa saṃlakṣayati-yadi ahaṃ mātāpitṛbhyāṃ mṛta eva gṛhītaḥ, kasmādbhūyo'haṃ gṛhaṃ praviśāmi ? gacchāmi, ārya mahākātyāyanasyāntikāt pravrajāmīti | atha śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | adrākṣīdāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ śroṇaṃ koṭikarṇaṃ dūrādeva | dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ śroṇaṃ koṭikarṇamidamavocat-ehi śroṇa, svāgataṃ te | dṛṣṭaste śroṇa ayaṃ lokaḥ paraśca lokaḥ ? sa kathayati-dṛṣṭo bhadanta mahākātyāyana | labheyāhaṃ bhadanta mahākātyāyana svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyāmupasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam | careyamahaṃ bhavato'ntike brahmacaryam | sa āryeṇoktaḥ - śroṇa, tāṃ tāvat pūrvikāṃ pratijñāṃ paripūraya | yathāgṛhītān saṃdeśān samarpayeti | sa tasyaurabhrikasya sakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ | bhadramukha, dṛṣṭaste pitā mayā | sa kathayati-aniṣṭo'sya karmaṇaḥ phalavipākaḥ | viramāsmādasaddharmāt | bhoḥ puruṣa, adya mama piturdvādaśavarṣāṇi kālagatasya | asti kaścid dṛṣṭaḥ paralokāt punarāgacchan ? bhadramukha, eṣo'hamāgataḥ | nāsau śraddadhāti | bhadramukha, yadi na śraddadhāsi, sa tava pitā kathayati- asti sūnādhastāt suvarṇasya kalaśaḥ | pūrṇastiṣṭhati | tamuddhṛtyātmānaṃ samyaksukhena prīṇaya | āryaṃ ca mahākātyāyanaṃ kālena kālaṃ piṇḍakena pratipādaya, asmākaṃ ca nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādeśaya | apyevaitat karma tanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gacchet | sa saṃlakṣayati- na kadācidevaṃ mayā śrutapūrvam | paśyāmi, saced bhūtaṃ bhaviṣyati, sarvametat satyam | tena gatvā khanitam | yāvat tat sarvaṃ tat tathaiva | tenābhiśraddadhātam | tataḥ paścāt sa pāradārikasya sakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya kathayati- bhadramukha, dṛṣṭaste mayā pitā | sa kathayati-aniṣṭo'sya karmaṇaḥ phalavipākaḥ | viramāsmāt pāpakādasaddharmāt | sa kathayati - bhoḥ puruṣa, adya mama piturdvādaśa varṣāṇi kālaṃ gatasya | asti kaścit tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ paralokaṃ gatvā punarāgacchan ? bhadramukha, eṣo'hamāgataḥ | nāsau śraddadhāti | sa cāha- bhadramukha, sacennābhiśraddadhāsi, tava pitrā agniṣṭomasyādhastāt suvarṇasya kalaśaḥ pūrayitvā sthāpitaḥ | sa kathayati-tamuddhṛtyātmānaṃ samyaksukhena prīṇaya, āryaṃ ca mahākātyāyanaṃ kālena kālaṃ piṇḍakena pratipādaya, asmākaṃ ca nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādeśaya | apyevaitat karma tanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gacchet | sa saṃlakṣayati-na kadācidetanmayā śrutapūrvam | paśyāmi, saced bhūtaṃ bhaviṣyati, sarvametat satyam | tena gatvā khanitam | yāvat tatsarvaṃ tattathaiva | tenābhiśraddadhātam | sa tasyā veśyāyāḥ sakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya kathayati- bhagini, dṛṣṭāste mayā mātā pitā bhrātā bhrāturjāyā dāsī | te kathayanti- aniṣṭo'sya karmaṇaḥ phalavipākaḥ | viramāsmāt pāpakādasaddharmāt | sā kathayati-bhoḥ puruṣaḥ, mama mātāpitrordvādaśa varṣāṇi kālagatayoḥ | asti kaścit tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ paralokaṃ gatvā punarāgacchan ? sa kathayati-eṣo'hamāgataḥ | sā na śraddadhāti | sa kathayati- bhagini, sacennābhiśraddadhāsi, tava paurāṇe paitṛke vāsagṛhe catasraḥ lohasaṃghāṭāḥ suvarṇapūrṇāstiṣṭhanti, madhye ca sauvarṇadaṇḍakamaṇḍaluḥ | te kathayanti- tamuddhṛtyātmānaṃ samyaksukhena prīṇaya, āryaṃ ca mahākātyāyanaṃ kālena kālaṃ piṇḍakena pratipādaya, asmākaṃ ca nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādeśaya | apyevaitat karma tanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gacchet | sā saṃlakṣayati- na kadācinmayā śrutapūrvam | paśyāmi, saced bhūtaṃ bhaviṣyati, sarvametat satyam | tayā gatvā khanitam | yāvat tat sarvaṃ tattathaiva | tayābhiśraddadhātam | śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇaḥ saṃlakṣayati- sarvo'yaṃ lokaḥ suvarṇasya śraddadhāti, na tu kaścinmama śraddhayā gacchatīti | tena vaipuṣpitam | śiśutve suvarṇena daśanā baddhāḥ | tayāsau pratyabhijñātaḥ | syādāryaḥ śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇa eva te bhaginījanaḥ saṃjānate(?)| tayā gatvā tasya mātāpitṛbhyāmārocitam | amba tāta koṭikarṇo'bhyāgata iti | anekaisteṣāmārocitam | te na kasyacit śraddhayā gacchanti | te kathayanti- putri tvamapyasmākamutprāsayasi | yāvadasau svayameva gataḥ | tena dvārakoṣṭhake sthitvotkāśanaśabdaḥ kṛtaḥ | hiraṇyasvaro'sau mahātmā | tasya śabdena sarvaṃ gṛhamāpūritam | sa taiḥ svareṇa pratyabhijñātaḥ | te kaṇṭhe pariṣvajya ruditumārabdhau | teṣāṃ bāṣpeṇa paṭalāni sphuṭitāni | draṣṭumārabdhau | sa kathayati-amba tāta anujānīdhvam | pravrajiṣyāmi samyageva śraddhayā agārādanagārikām | tau kathayataḥ-putra āvāṃ tvadīyena śokena rudantāvandhībhūtau | idānīṃ tvāmevāgamya cakṣuḥ pratilabdham | yāvadāvāṃ jīvāmaḥ, tāvanna pravrajitavyam | yadā kālaṃ kariṣyāmaḥ, tadā pravrajiṣyasi | tenāyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasyāntikāddharmaṃ śrutvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam, mātāpitarau ca śaraṇagamanaśikṣāpadeṣu pratiṣṭhāpitau | āgamacatuṣṭayamadhītam, sakṛdāgāmiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam | mātāpitarau satyeṣu pratiṣṭhāpitau ||
apareṇa samayena tasya mātāpitarau kālagatau | sa taṃ dhanajātaṃ dīnānāthakṛpaṇebhyo dattvā daridrānadaridrān kṛtvā yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramyāyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte'sthāt | ekānte sthitaḥ śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇa āyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanamidamavocat-labheyāhamāryamahākātyāyana svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyām,. yāvaccareyāhaṃ bhagavato'ntike brahmacaryam | sa āyuṣmatā mahākātyāyanena pravrajitaḥ | tena pravrajya mātṛkādhītā, anāgāmiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam | asmāt parāntakeṣu janapadeṣvalpabhikṣukam | kṛcchreṇa deśavargo gaṇaḥ paripūryate | sa traimāsīṃ śrāmaṇero dhāritaḥ | dharmatā khalu yathā buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ śrāvakāṇāṃ dvau saṃnipātau bhavataḥ | yaccāṣāḍhyāṃ varṣopanāyikāyāṃ yacca kārtikyāṃ pūrṇamāsyām | tatra ye āṣāḍhyāṃ varṣopanāyikāyāṃ saṃnipatanti, te tāṃstānuddeśayogamanasikārānudgṛhya paryavāpya tāsu tāsu grāmanagaranigamarāṣṭrarājadhānīṣu varṣāmupagacchanti | ye kārtikyāṃ paurṇamāsyāṃ saṃnipatanti, te yathādhigatamārocayanti, uttare ca paripṛcchanti sūtrasya vinayasya mātṛkāyāḥ | evameva mahāśrāvakāṇāmapi | atha ye āyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya sārdhaṃvihāryantevāsikā bhikṣavaḥ tāṃstānuddeśayogamanasikāraviśeṣān gṛhya paryavāpya tāsu tāsu grāmanagaranigamarāṣṭrarājadhānīṣu varṣāmupagatāḥ, te trayāṇāṃ vārṣikāṇāṃ māsānāmatyayāt kṛtacīvarā niṣṭhitacīvarāḥ samādāya pātracīvaraṃ yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanastenopasaṃkrāntāḥ | upasaṃkramyāyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya pādau śirasā vanditvaikānte niṣpaṇṇāḥ | ekānte niṣadya yathādhigatamārocayanti, uttare ca paripṛcchanti | deśavargo gaṇaḥ paripūrṇaḥ | sa tenopasaṃpāditaḥ | tena tṛtīyapiṭakamadhītam | sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgo yāvad abhivādyaśca saṃvṛttaḥ ||
athāyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya sārdhaṃvihāryantevāsikā āyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanaṃ yāvattāvat paryupāsyāyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanamidavamocan- dṛṣṭo'smābhirupādhyāyaḥ paryupāsitaśca | gacchāmo vayam, bhagavantaṃ paryupāsiṣyāmahe | sa cāha-vatsā evaṃ kurudhvam | draṣṭavyā eva paryupāsitavyā eva hi tathāgatā arhantaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhāḥ | tena khalu punaḥ samayena śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇastasyāmeva parṣadi saṃniṣaṇṇo'bhūt saṃnipatitaḥ | athāyuṣmān śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇa utthāyāsanād ekāṃsamuttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā dakṣiṇaṃ jānumaṇḍalaṃ pṛthivyāṃ pratiṣṭhāpya yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanastenāñjaliṃ kṛtvā praṇamyāyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanamidamavocat-dṛṣṭo mayopādhyāyānubhāvena sa bhagavān dharmakāyena, no tu rūpakāyena | gacchāmi upādhyāya, rūpakāyenāpi taṃ bhagavantaṃ drakṣyāmi | sa āha-evaṃ vatsa kuruṣva | durlabhadarśanā hi vatsa tathāgatā arhantaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhāḥ tadyathā audumbarapuṣpam | asmākaṃ ca vacanena bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vandasva, alpābādhatāṃ ca yāvat sukhasparśavihāratāṃ ca | pañca praśnāṃśca pṛccha- asmāt parāntakeṣu bhadanta janapadeṣu alpabhikṣukam | kṛcchreṇa daśavargagaṇaḥ paripūryate | tatrāsmābhiḥ kathaṃ pratipattavyam ? kharā bhūmī gokaṇṭakā dhānāḥ | asmākamaparāntakeṣu janapadeṣu idamevaṃrūpamāstaraṇaṃ pratyāstaraṇaṃ tadyathā avicarma gocarma cchāgacarma | tadanyeṣu janapadeṣu idamevaṃrūpamāstaraṇaṃ pratyāstaraṇaṃ tadyathā erako mareko jandurako mandurakaḥ | evamevāsmāt parāntakeṣu janapadeṣvidamevaṃrūpamāstaraṇaṃ pratyāstaraṇaṃ tadyathā avicarma pūrvavat | udakastabdhikā manuṣyāḥ snātopavicārāḥ | bhikṣurbhikṣoścīvarakāni preṣayati itaścyutāni tatrāsaṃprāptāni kasyaitāni naiḥsargikāni | adhivāsayati āyuṣmāñchroṇaḥ koṭikarṇa āyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya tūṣṇībhāvena | athāyuṣmāñchroṇaḥ koṭikarṇaḥ tasyā eva rātreratyayāt pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya vāsavagrāmakaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat | yāvadanupūrveṇa śrāvastīmanuprāptaḥ | athāyuṣmāñchroṇaḥ koṭikarṇaḥ pātracīvaraṃ pratisāmayya pādau prakṣālya yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramyaikānte niṣaṇṇaḥ| tatra bhagavānāyuṣmantamānandamāmantrayate sma-gaccha ānanda tathāgatasya śroṇasya ca koṭikarṇasyaikavihāre mañcaṃ prajñāpaya | evaṃ bhadanteti āyuṣmānānandastathāgatasya śroṇasya ca koṭikarṇasya yāvat prajñāpya yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya bhagavantamidamavocat-prajñapto bhadanta tathāgatasya śroṇasya ca koṭikarṇasyaikavihāre mañco yasyedānīṃ bhagavān kālaṃ manyate | atha bhagavān yena śroṇasya koṭikarṇasya vihārastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ, yāvadvihāraṃ praviśya niṣaṇṇaḥ | yāvat paśyati smṛtiṃ pratimukhamupasthāpya | athāyuṣmānapi śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo bahirvihārasya pādau prakṣālya vihāraṃ praviśya niṣaṇṇaḥ paryaṅkamābhujya yāvat pratimukhaṃ smṛtimupasthāpya | tāṃ khalu rātriṃ bhagavān āyuṣmāṃśca śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇa āryeṇa tūṣṇībhāvenādhivāsitavān | atha bhagavān rātryāḥ pratyūṣasamaye āyuṣmantaṃ śroṇaṃ koṭikarṇamāmantrayate smapratibhātu te śroṇa dharmo yo mayā svayamabhijñāyābhisaṃbudhyākhyātaḥ| athāyuṣmān śroṇo bhagavatā kṛtāvakāśaḥ asmāt parāntikayā guptikayā udānāt pārāyaṇāt satyadṛṣṭaḥ śailagāthā munigāthā arthavargīyāṇi ca sūtrāṇi vistareṇa svareṇa svādhyāyaṃ karoti | atha bhagavāñchroṇasya koṭikarṇasya kathāparyavasānaṃ viditvā āyuṣmantaṃ śroṇaṃ koṭikarṇamidamavocat-sādhu sādhu śroṇa, madhuraste dharmo bhāṣitaḥ praṇītaśca, yo mayā svayamabhijñāyābhisaṃbudhyākhyātaḥ| athāyuṣmataḥ śroṇasya koṭikarṇasyaitadabhavat-ayaṃ me kālo bhagavata upādhyāyasya vacasārocayitumiti viditvotthāyāsanād yāvad bhagavantaṃ praṇamyedamavocat-asmāt parāntakeṣu janapadeṣu vāsavagrāmake bhadantamahākātyāyanaḥ prativasati, yo me upādhyāyaḥ | sa bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vandate alpābādhatāṃ ca pṛcchati yāvat sparśavihāratāṃ ca | pañca ca praśnān pṛcchati vistareṇoccārayitavyāni | atha bhagavāñcchroṇaṃ koṭikarṇamidamavocat-akālaṃ te śroṇa praśnavyākaraṇāya | saṃghamelakaḥ tatra kālo bhaviṣyati praśnasya vyākaraṇāya | atha bhagavān kālyamevotthāya purastādbhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ | athāyuṣmāñcchroṇaḥ koṭikarṇo yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvaikānte'sthāt | ekāntasthito bhagavantamidamavocat-asmāt parāntakeṣu janapadeṣu vāsavagrāmake bhadantamahākātyāyanaḥ prativasati, yo me upādhyāyaḥ | sa bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vandate alpābādhatāṃ ca pṛcchati yāvat sparśavihāratāṃ ca | pañca ca praśnāni vistareṇoccārayitavyāni yathāpūrvamuktāni yāvat kasya naiḥsargikāni | bhagavānāha-tasmādanujānāmi | pratyantimeṣu janapadeṣu vinayadharapañcamenopasaṃpadā, sadā snātaḥ, ekapalāśike upānahe dhārayitavye na dvipuṭāṃ na tripuṭām | sā cet kṣayadharmiṇī bhavati, tāṃ tyaktvā punarnavā grahītavyā | bhikṣurbhikṣoścīvarakāni preṣayati itaścyutāni tatrāsaṃprāptāni na kasyacinnaiḥsargikāṇi | āyuṣmān upālī buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ pṛcchati-yaduktaṃ bhadanta bhagavatā pratyantimeṣu janapadeṣu vinayadharapañcamenopasaṃpadam, tatra katamo'ntaḥ katamaḥ pratyantaḥ ? pūrveṇopāli puṇḍavardhanaṃ nāma nagaram, tasya pūrveṇa puṇḍakakṣo nāma parvataḥ, tataḥ pareṇa pratyantaḥ| dakṣiṇena śarāvatī nāma nagarī, tasyāḥ pareṇa sarāvatī nāma nadī, so'ntaḥ, tataḥ pareṇa pratyantaḥ | paścimena sthūṇopasthūṇakau brāhmaṇagrāmakau, so'ntaḥ, tataḥ pareṇa pratyantaḥ | uttareṇa uśīragiriḥ so'ntaḥ, tataḥ pareṇa pratyantaḥ ||
kiṃ bhadanta āyuṣmatā śroṇena koṭikarṇena karma kṛtamiti vistaraḥ | bhagavānāha-bhūtapūrvaṃ yāvat kāśyapo nāma tathāgato'rhan samyaksaṃbuddho bhagavān śāstā loka utpannaḥ | tena khalu samayena vārāṇasyāṃ dvau jāyāpatikau | tābhyāṃ kāśyapasya samyaksaṃbuddhasyāntike śaraṇagamanaśikṣāpadāni udgṛhītāni | yadā kāśyapaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ sakalaṃ buddhakāryaṃ kṛtvā nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau parinirvṛtaḥ, tasya rājñā kṛkinā catūratnamayaṃ caityaṃ kāritaṃ samantādyojanamuccatvena | tena tatra khaṇḍasphuṭapratisaṃskaraṇāya ye pūrvanagaradvāre karapratyāyā uttiṣṭhante, te tasmin stūpe'nupradattāḥ | yadā kṛkī rājā kālagataḥ, tasya putraḥ sujāto nāmnā sa rājye pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ | tasyāmātyaiḥ stokāḥ karapratyāyā upanāmitāḥ | so'mātyānāmantrayate-kiṃkāraṇamasmākaṃ bhavadbhiḥ stokakarapratyāyā upanāmitāḥ ? kimasmākaṃ vijite karapratyāyā nottiṣṭhante ? te kathayanti - deva, kutaḥ karapratyāyā uttiṣṭhante? ye deva pūrvadvāre karapratyāyāste vṛddharājñā stūpe khaṇḍasphuṭapratisaṃskārakaraṇāya prajñāpitāḥ | yadi devo'nujānīyāt, te vayaṃ tān karapratyāyān samucchindāmaḥ | sa kathayati-bhavantaḥ, yanmama pitrā kṛtam, devakṛtaṃ na tu brahmakṛtaṃ tat | te saṃlakṣayanti-yadi devo'nujānīte, vayaṃ tathā kariṣyāmo yathā svayameva te karapratyāyā notthāsyanti | taiḥ sa dvāre baddhvā sthāpitaḥ | na bhūyaḥ karapratyāyā uttiṣṭhante | tasmin stūpe caṭitakāni prādurbhūtāni | tau jāyāpatī vṛddhībhūtau tatraiva stūpe parikarma kurvāṇau tiṣṭhataḥ | uttarāpathāt sārthavāhaḥ paṇyamādāya vārāṇasīmanuprātaḥ | tenāsau dṛṣṭaḥ stūpaḥ | caṭitasphuṭitakaḥ prādurbhūtaḥ | sa dṛṣṭvā pṛcchati-amba tāta kasyaiṣa stūpa iti | tau kathayataḥ -kāśyapasya samyaksaṃbuddhasya | kena kāritaḥ ? kṛkinā rājñā | na tena rājñāsmin stūpe khaṇḍasphuṭapratisaṃskārakaraṇāya kiṃcit prajñāptam ? tau kathayataḥ -prajñāptam | ye pūrvanagaradvāre karapratyāyāste'smin stūpe khaṇḍasphuṭapratisaṃskaraṇāya niryātitāḥ | kṛkī rājā kālagataḥ | tasya putraḥ sujāto nāma, sa rājye pratiṣṭhitaḥ | tena te karapratyāyāḥ samucchinnāḥ | tenāsmin stūpe caṭitasphuṭitakāni prādurbhūtāni | tasya ratnakarṇikā karṇe āmuktikā | tena sā ratnakarṇikāvatārya tayordattā | amba tāta anayā karṇikayāsmin stūpe khaṇḍasphuṭapratisaṃskāraṃ kurutamiti | yāvadahaṃ paṇyaṃ visarjayitvā āgacchāmi | tataḥ paścād bhūyo'pi dāsyāmi | taistāṃ vikrīya tasmin stūpe khaṇḍasphuṭitapratisaṃskāraḥ kṛtaḥ | aparamutsarpitam | athāpareṇa samayena sārthavāhaḥ paṇyaṃ visarjayitvā āgataḥ | tena sa dṛṣṭaḥ stūpo'secanakadarśanaḥ| dṛṣṭvā ca bhūyasyā mātrayābhiprasannaḥ | sa prasādajātaḥ pṛcchati-amba tāta yuṣmābhiḥ kiṃciduddhārikṛtam | tau kathayataḥ- putra nāsmābhiḥ kiṃciduddhārikṛtam | kiṃ tvaparamutsarpitaṃ tiṣṭhati | tena prasādajātena yattatrāvaśiṣṭam aparaṃ ca dattvā mahatīṃ pūjāṃ kṛtvā praṇidhānaṃ ca kṛtam- anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlenāḍhye mahādhane mahābhoge kule jāyeyam | evaṃvidhānāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ lābhī syām | evaṃvidhameva śāstāramārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyamiti | kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavaḥ yo'sau sārthavāhaḥ, eṣa evāsau śroṇaḥ koṭikarṇaḥ | yadanena kāśyapasya samyaksaṃbuddhasya stūpe kārāṃ kṛtvā praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam, tasya karmaṇo vipākenāḍhye mahādhane mahābhoge kule jātaḥ | mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam | ahamanena kāśyapena samyaksaṃbuddhena sārdhaṃ samajavaḥ samabalaḥ samadhuraḥ samasāmānyaprāptaḥ śāstā ārāgito na virāgitaḥ| iti bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāmekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānāṃ dharmāṇāmekāntaśuklo vipākaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāttarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇyapāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣveva karmasvābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ityevaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam ||
bhikṣava ūcuḥ-kiṃ bhadanta āyuṣmatā śroṇena koṭikarṇena karma kṛtaṃ yasya karmaṇo vipākena dṛṣṭa eva dharme apāyā dṛṣṭvāḥ ? bhagavānāha -yadanena māturantike kharavākkarma niścāritam, tasya karmaṇo vipākena dṛṣṭa eva dharme apāyā dṛṣṭvā iti ||
idamavocadbhagavān | āttamanasaste bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitamabhyanandan ||
iti śrīdivyāvadāne koṭikarṇāvadānaṃ prathamam ||
